I listened to my parents' Otis Redding albums over and over as a kid. Love him. For some reason, I assumed you reacted to him before. Was going to suggest this one to play for your guest reviewer! Otis Redding is legendary. Also, if you do the Temptations Pappa was a Rolling Stone is an absolute favorite. Thanks for all you do!

Agree - Otis was smoooooth. You may lose some of your views by playing these wonderful old classics, but I bet you gain quite a few older folks (like Me!). Young folks should listen to these R&B legends as this is the roots to many later rock bands. Otis, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ray Charles all have songs that were covered by bands like the Stones and especially Humble Pie & Small Faces who were definite soul boys. There are many good Otis songs, but two I can think of right off are "Respect"(also covered by Aretha) and "Try a Little Tenderness".

"(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was the first ever posthumous single to top the charts in the U.S. 1967 was the year Otis Redding created a buzz for himself at the Monterey Pop Festival with legendary performances of "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", and "Try a Little Tenderness". It was also the year he died, sadly. Reprise records released a live album from that concert in 1970, with the Jimi Hendrix Experience on side one and Otis Redding on side two that I used to often listen to back when I was a teenager in the eighties. Steve Cropper co-wrote "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". Those sweet guitar licks he lays down on it influenced generations of players.

It is sad to think that Otis never got to hear this song on the radio or to know what a huge hit it would become. In Jan. '68, the song became the number one song in the country. To show what a great singer Otis was, Biz, you comment on how smooth like butter his voice is on this record, but much of Otis's best work is when his voice had a grittier sound. Listen to "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Satisfaction", and of course his classic "Try a Little Tenderness." Keith preferred the Otis Redding version of "Satisfaction" to that of the Stones. Here's what Keith said about it - “The way Otis Redding ended up doing it is probably closer to my original conception for the song,” Richards told Guitar World. “Otis got it right. Our version was a demo for his version.”

I can't abide you not reacting to the 60s and 70s soul legends -- their music is like the 'brother from another mother' of classic rock from that era . . . . :-) Anyway, "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" is one of those perfect songs. Maybe too perfect -- it's kind of beyond natural

A 💯 classic song right there. The perfect definition of the term. Hope you do dive into more R&B, soul etc. especially from the late '60s through the '70s. I love it as much as I do the rock and roll from those eras. There's an artist from Georgia from the '70s that you should check out, Lee Moses ( RIP). He does a great soulful cover of the song California Dreaming ( originally done by the Mamas and the Papas). It's on the Time and Place album. The title track and the whole album is great also.

But, if you want something newer and a bit swampy, check out this one, Mark Brushard doing his break out song, Home. here is the link. kzitem.info/news/bejne/p6uNtqebnpmSfqw I only mention because re has covered so many Otis Redding songs after he got famous. I think Steve Ripely of the Tractors produced his first album; Steve is another good one to check out, Baby Likes To Rock it, was their break out song.
