Sounds like the builds are coming out faster and they are correcting minor things still. A MASSIVE amount of games became playable just a few days ago, and streaming from a PC expands that list even further. You'll definitely enjoy it!

@@dovakeen1179 I know Valve extensively says this "does not support any VR game". Curious how it played. Did they play the non-vr port? Or did they successfully get an oculus or something to connect?

If you're trying to use the right track pad for mouse aiming, you need to change its setting from AS Joystick to Mouse . And turn off trackball setting once you do that. I've used the STEAM controller for a few years, and it's improved my game considerably for most games.

You have reasonable and good criticisms about the device. Get annoyed by some review that seem like they have other agendas. You know criticism that don't make sense, like they are reaching or trying to sway people from buying it.

You should lock some games to 30 fps from the quick access menu of the Steam Deck. Control would feel smoother that way, you may also play with the graphical settings of some games to get better performance, also turn off the in-game V-Sync, the frame cap from the Steam Deck already has its own V-Sync
@CodetheThings

Yep I was mostly trying with stock settings and game interpretation of the underlying hardware for recommended gameplay. Definitely a good tip for folks and forgot to mention about the FPS lock helping.

I've played around with it a bit. For some reason it just doesn't seem usable in game. Maybe it's just the registry on my system but the desktop movement is fine. I need to spin up age of empires or a mouse heavy game to test further.

@@CodetheThings In your Portal Reloaded footage, at least, the issue is that the trackpad has defaulted in this case to a mouse emulation mode that outputs thumbstick signals, which in my experience isn't friendly to quick swipes of the thumb. (I think this is currently called "As Joystick", but in steam big picture it was called "mouse joystick".) If you hit the Steam button while in-game, you can edit your control layout and change the right trackpad to output mouse signals, which I think you'll find will play much nicer.
@8BitCerberus
2 жыл бұрын
@@gobgonson8053 yeah that was definitely mouse-like joystick. Changing it to mouse, and enabling trackball settings would fix it. Even enabling trackball settings on mouse-like joystick would be better and at least allow the flicks that he was trying, without stopping the instant his thumb stops moving or is lifted off the trackpad. But actual mouse will always be the best choice.

@@CodetheThings You need to set the trackpad to operate like a trackball, the suface area isnt large enough to easily use it as an emulated mouse for games.

Nice review. How is the situation with fan noise? Can you hear high frequency whine?
@CodetheThings
2 жыл бұрын
At first boot it seemed noticable. I think I got used to the slight whine and may not be completely gone. Overall the fan makes enough noise during typical use it sounds like my Razer laptop when booting up. Which means you'll always need the volume on at least 50% unless using a headset.

This will be my first Handheld console since my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S20 plus 5G) but for handheld gaming maybe the first Gameboy Advance and the PSP 2000. I still own the old Gameboy Color purple variant but nothing has been as interesting as the Steam Deck in a long time, especially for the price. in the Q3 queue good time for summer breaks/vacation.

I agree this is the first handheld that really interested me in playing. The switch I liked for the family as a console and was always too worried to let the smaller kids travel with it. I've already gotten a ton of use out of mine, and Valve did a really good job pricing and developing it. Hopefully they continue to add compatibility and features.

Hey, I found that you can use any Xbox One controller thumb sticks like from Kontrolfreek on the steam deck. All you have to do is cut a thin microfiber cleaning cloth (like the ones that come with glasses or glass screen protectors) to shape and place it in between the thumb stick and kontrolfreek. The thin cloth is the perfect thickness to fill in the space and create a perfect hold.

I have been using the Xbox one Omni kontrolfreek thumb sticks for a month now. It really made FPS games like BO4 Zombies more enjoyable. It’s pretty easy to put on and take off. The steam deck won’t fit in the case with them on. I just take them off and put them in the case first. I place them behind the triggers faced down with the cut cloth inside them.

I personally never found the touch sensitive thumb sticks useful. Activating gyro using the thumb sticks just felt gimmicky to me. If I ever use gyro I tend to set my gyro activation button to left trigger full pull.
@CodetheThings

Oh super interesting. I hadn't seen that, but worth checking out. I agree the gyro track pads are a bit of a gimmick. I'm sure they help fill the gap of controller games, but as you could see they didn't map well in the games I had tried.

@@CodetheThings I noticed the track ball function didn’t seem to work well sometimes if friction was set too high. Causing the track pad to feel/perform bad. I was experiencing the same issue on portal at first until I changed the settings to “as mouse” and set “track ball” friction low or turned it off altogether, and changed the “track pad sensitivity” up as needed. I found most games have the trackpad sensitivity in the default layout set too low also.

Did you try turning sensitivity up in game to see if it helps the trackpad? I've seen other people say it works great even with fps games like Doom

Yep it's more about getting it to map as a trackpad and not a joystick. Game sensitivity didn't impact but didn't realize the trackpad settings default poorly.

It could just be the set of games I tested. You can feel the gyro move, but the game translation was just not where I'd expect it. I've been going through more of my catalog but not a ton of improvement. It could be the recent proton update that added a ton of compatible games, had an effect on the other games performances. Also, I didn't change around defaults to see how things ran out of the box. It could be others tweak the games to fit the console.
