I thought the whole thing with firebenders being able to create fire spontaneously was one of the things that made them so formidable, and what made them feel superior to other benders. Their advantage also helped them create technological advancements that they used to suppress other benders, like *STEEL PRISONS THAT EARTHBENDERS COULDN’T USE AGAINST THEM* It hurts to knock a child’s acting, but the characters in ATLA had so much depth to them that wooden, expressionless acting just takes such a huge dump on the internal struggles the characters have. Aang had so much going on that he had to deal with, he felt like a real person navigating his youth, his morals, his desires, and his responsibilities. Honestly this as big of a slap in the face to his character as TLOK was. That’s saying something. Also Shymalan’s obsession with changing the pronunciations to be more accurate to how they’d be pronounced in Asian cultures is especially funny when he cast white actors for the Asian and Inuit protagonists while once again casting Indian men as the antagonists.
@eowynsisterdaughter
3 жыл бұрын
I think what happened with the names is that Mike and Bryan spelled them all so they made sense to a Western method of pronunciation. Shymalan looked at just the spelling and said, "that's not how a particular Eastern culture would pronounce that arrangement of consonants and vowels," and didn't realize it was already spelled specifically to not confuse Western audiences. Might be putting too much thought into it, but it really is such a bizarre aspect of the film I wondered about it a lot.

Actually not all benders could create their own element. Waterbenders needed water around them (the best ones made it out of air cus theres water in air). Eartbenders needed earth around them, and Air benders, well its literally air so. Firebenders were the only benders who could create it out of nothing, making them far more devastating and powerful in that regard. That was one of the bigger reasons they were intimidating. But now, because they need a little campfire first. They are seriously the weakest villains in the history of villains. How did these people ever wipe out anything? You explain why its stupid yourself but yeah, its stupid. Another thing is they explain that Sozin's comet (which why do they mention it already?) can make firebenders bend out of nothing. So the comet that in the show, made firebenders who could already make fire out of nothing 100 times stronger (as stated in the show) makes firebenders in this movie just as strong as a normal firebender in the show. How boring is that. Like how do you make something as awesome as firebending boring. You have to deliberately try to make your movie as bad as possible to make a decision like that.

In an interview M. Night said he nerfed fire benders because it was unfair how they can shoot fire out of nothing. Earth is everywhere, air is everywhere, and water benders had tribes that lived in the north and south poles where water is plentiful (also swamp benders say hi) and water is can be pulled from the air/soil/plant life around them. So what was going through M. Night's mind thinking fire benders needed that crutch is beyond reason.

You know when Aang discovered that all of the other Airbender monks (the only family he’s ever known) were dead, he found them all gathered together in a scattered field. Like they were gathered and killed all at once. That’s what made it horrifying. In the live action one, they’re just dumped all over the place, and the skeletons don’t look like they had ANY remnant of clothes on them. This movie is so frustrating

9:35 You're thinking of when they met Haru in season 1 and learn that his father was arrested, along with all the other Earthbenders in his village, and taken to an oil rig style prison. Which was made of metal and out in the ocean, far away from EARTH so the EARTHBENDERS couldn't EARTHBEND. Instead we get a bunch of EARTHBENDERS in a camp, surrounded by EARTH, and just kind of going with being attacked by the Fire Nation I guess? Not to mention that they give Aang the spotlight in the movie when it was Katara that tries and succeeds in rallying the Earthbenders to fight for their freedom. Katara, along with many other characters, could be background characters for all the movie cares.

It is also the pronunciation in almost every latin romance language and german, japanese, chinese, and many others. English probably is the most inaccurate pronunciation of any name ever. Take almost any anime in english and sounds nothing like it should. I know Avatar is american but the culture, names and world is supposed to be inspired in asian and indigenous tribes.
@MonkParty
3 жыл бұрын
@@NaturalNihilist I only mentioned it because of the East Asian pronunciation being relevant to the inspiration of the show. As for why it's originally pronounced "Incorrectly" (I'm not sure if it's clarified anywhere but) it could be a number of things. Perhaps the cast were ignorant of the pronunciation, but with how much work went into accurately capturing East Asian martial arts, I'd say that's unlikely. My assumption is that despite it being BASED on East Asian culture, it is it's own unique world and the showrunners didn't want it to feel too much like it was ripped from anime/took too heavily from the cultures. It feels like a deliberate decision regardless of the accuracy, but once again that's purely an assumption. Just because it was inspired by a culture doesn't mean it needs to take everything from that culture.

One thing that I really hated about the movie was the earth benders prisoner camp. In the show, the original earth benders prison they are referencing was a giant metal factory in the middle of the ocean and that’s why they couldn’t earth bend and they were only able to earth bend after Aang and the others got a bunch of coal to spew out from a vent on the metal factory island and that’s when the prisoners had to get motivated again to earth bend. But in the movie, they just ignore that whole metal factory prison camp island and they just portrayed it as a normal looking camp on the ground and just say that they lost their motivation to earth bend!! So the change in name pronunciation is closer to how you'd pronounce the names if they were Japanese. I'm pretty sure it was a choice to be more accurate to the pronunciation of the languages that inspired the names, seeing as Avatar is heavily influenced by Japanese and east Asian culture. The names really don't bother me at all, in fact I respect that creative decision to not pronounce the clearly Asian-inspired names in a very American anglicized way like they did in the original series. What kills me is the way they pronounce "Avatar." Like, that's just a regular English word and they're literally pronouncing it wrong.

The thing about it is making it where the fire benders have to use pre-existing fire it's just so stupid to me because apparently they wanted to make it feel more grounded like they felt it was unfair that the firebenders could just create fire. Which the show explains that yes first of all it is supposed to be unfair it's part of the reason they became so powerful, secondly they draw their power directly from the Sun, and finally technically speaking any Bender can just pull their element from thin air except for Earth and even then most of the places on the planet have Earth so it's still a pretty fair advantage. Water benders can pull moisture from the air and surrounding plant life, airbenders control the literal air, earthbenders are literally surrounded by rocks most of the time so every nation has the capability to usually use their element, the fire nation became so powerful because they figured out ways to basically counteract other benders using metal until toph invented metal bending and the old lady figured out how to blood bend

And earthebenders have to be on solid ground, losing their bending if they're surrounded by metal.

The whole 6 earth benders moving one rock is very misunderstood. I'm assuming it's suppose to be portrayed that the 6 earth benders were the ones that moved the rock wall that protected the dad and son from the fire attack and it pans to a floating rock being bended by that one guy. But because of the way the camera pans and how it's framed, a lot of people assumed the former.
