Price and size. It's more for an entry level camera into cinematography. It's hard to make that into a criticism. And I think shutter is just one aspect of something being cinematic. Most people won't even be able to tell the difference with motion blur or the type of shutter used. That's why I feel it is onver thinking it. at least that's my opinion. I see the FX3 and 30 as great entry cameras or B and C cams. For me I would use either for run and gun documentaries. Keep it lightweight and simple, good XLR mic, one good lens and ND, a few batteries and a tripod. Fast, lights, and capable of telling a good story.

A Zacuto-style external magnifier was for me clumsy and unusable. What Sony needs to do is offer an *orientable*, top-mounted VF similar to those offered by Blackmagic. For the operator, this is an essential capability. Professional cine cameras have orientable viewfinders. The reason is, image quality aside, the viewfinder is the most important element of any camera.

It's like we're back in the 5DII/7D days, with people working around the optical viewfinder not working for video. Except now we have had all the needed technology (mirrorless design with an EVF) for years, and Sony has just purposely left it out of the camera. This is why the FX3 has never seemed worth it to me over the A7sIII- for the same money you can get the A7sIII + the hotshoe XLR brick, and you end up with the same capabilities WITH an EVF and a real mechanical shutter for photos. It'll be interesting to see how Sony handicaps the FX30's "hybrid" sibling (A7000?) to try to protect the "real" cinema cams. The A7sIII's only limitation for photography is its low pixel count, while the FX30 sensor is a perfectly fine 26MP. If Sony isn't careful to handicap the A7000 somehow, it could outshine the A74 and even the A1 in some ways, as a hybrid (ignoring sensor size of course).
@aldolega
2 жыл бұрын
Oh, and as for the loupe- a much better option than the strap mount would be one of the LCDVF clones, which have a thin metal frame that mounts to the screen and then the loupe simply magnets on to that. No messing with straps, and you can use it with the screen flipped out to give yourself a tilting EVF. I did this on my 60D back in the day and it worked fairly well.
@vsc604
2 жыл бұрын
well said, "same as the FX3, just with different sensor". it's a 26mp stills optimized sensor with slow readout, 1.04x cropped 4K put in cine package for $1800. considering the a6600 is $1400, the forthcoming a7000? could go for $1600-1800 and get a real EVF and mechanical shutter. then again sony might handicap it by limiting it to 4k30p so many people are fooled by the "cine" packaging, maybe sony can put a 1 inch sensor in that bulky fx3 body call it FX300, and people will still rave how it's a game changer.

@@DjimmyTrovy I'm just being realistic about the product planning Sony seems to be implementing. They've had all the pieces needed to give us an uncompromised hybrid camera (at least uncompromised within the boundaries of a photo-camera form factor, aka no NDs) for years now, and yet they still never give the whole package. They are checking off each user case except the one that will be the most useful to the largest number of people, because once people have that, they won't need to keep chasing a new camera model every year.

For color shift/cast in ND filters I wonder if auto white balance would help.
@GingersnapRacing
Жыл бұрын
In my experience AWB almost always leaves me with some casting on an a6500. I’ve now moved to just taking the extra moment to set the white balance using the set tool. I do this by pre dialing in my ND and then do a white balance set. (With memory modes though this is more complicated) then I’ll do a quick shot of my color checker as a baseline for grading and call it good. All in all it’s less than 5 min worth the work to get a better result than AWB. Now if lighting changes a ton I might do it again but for my uses I don’t have that problem often

You, know this is just not good advice at all concerning that loupe on the screen. I owned the same one and tried it out. It is not SHARP, don’t buy it. And secondly how to do you do focus tracking with this on? You can’t. And you wreck one of the greatest features of this camera. Just pure nonsense. Get the LEYE Portkeys viewfinder. It’s sharp, gives you waveform, false colour, Luts etc, and is really sharp, plus has a diopter to dial in to the characteristics of your eye. And it does not block the touch LCD when mounted on a SmallRig half cage with its short 15mm rod. Or you can mount if at the back of the SmallRig FX3 handle extension using a small nato quick release double ball also from SmallRig.

Hey Jeven ! Big fan of your content and you channel ! Awesome video as always ! Slightly new to cameras and stuff myself. I have a question. Having observed cameras since the past few months I've found that besides the crop factor and all that stuff the main and the most important different between full frame and APS-C cameras is the light coming into the image and hence the image quality. This is pretty much what is happening in this case between the FX3 and FX30 from what I can observe. Both are feature wise the same but the image in FX30 is, inherently, noticeably darker and and hence the overall quality of the footage. Is there a way to tweak this in APS-Cs and get an image quality close to that of the full frames by doing some changes in post etc. Would look forward to your reply on this ! If there is something that can be done about it I would request you to please make a video on it. Thanks again Bro ! Big fan !

The missing internal ND Filter is why I'm not getting this one. Otherwise it's awesome! BTW: It's NOT a size issue. Maybe a variable ND with 5 steps or so wouldn't fit. But I had a small Lumix once, which had 2 (I guess it was 2) steps of internal ND. Also, the Sony ZV-1 has one built-in. Just one step or two internally, that's MUCH better than nothing. Sony just doesn't want to add an internal ND filter, because they still want people buy their bigger cameras. :)
@SCHAUDENLUCAS

Also it doesn't combine with IBIS well, which is why the FX6 and FX9 don't have IBIS. Since the body style of the FX3/30 is basically identical to the A7 line, it was a less engineering cost for sony. I guess they use a lot of the exact same internals than an A7ii/iii/Siii/iv and therefore have a higher margin or would need to make the cameras more expensive and sell fewer... But IBIS will die. Soon no video focused cameras will have IBIS anymore. Software takes over.

I really always wanted a FX3 But the EVF was a dealbreaker, therefore I chose the A7S3. However now, that dang new firmware is out for FX3, and looks so fantastic.......arrgghh having used the a7s3 the past 3weeks in SoCal, I too really need an evf. But your video may have sold me back on the fx3. I have seen other videos on this viewfinder but your has been the only one where you are actually using it in the environment where it will be used. All others show it in their studio. Your video specifically showed 2 CRITICAL things. 1) how quickly you can put the thing on & off, very cool. And how you attached it with the fx3 screen CLOSED. no one showed this. Why would I open the screen and attach it? Thanks for showing that. 2) Outside I wear a hat. With the a7s3 , the past 3weeks I have been constantly bumping my hat when looking thru the evf. I have to remember to flip my hat around, and then my sunglasses fall off the back, especially in the wind etc....but you have a sideways shot that shows how your hat never even comes close to touching the fx3 body....I'm sold. Thank you again for taking the time to make this video!

Nah. Its a cinema camera. There is things like Shutter Angle that should be included that you'll find on every other cinema camera...

@@JevenDovey exactly. It’s a cinema camera. If it is going to the sold as a cinema camera then it should judged as such. Especially if the fixes are simple fixes

It could easily be the best hybrid mirrorless apsc camera with proper photo features and an evf .... I'm kinda sad

@@JevenDovey Totally agree I can easily skip the ND Filter but not the lack of Shutter Angle since is suppose to be a camera dedicated to film not to photograph.

Excellent video. Thanks for the link to the strap on viewfinder. I bought it while watching your video. Cheers.

The link seems to have vanished for the viewfinder. Any idea on where it can be found now?

The biggest problem with those viewfinders and their magnifying lenses are severe burn-ins on your LCD. Trust me, you will get them one sunny day.

The messed up part about shutter angle with Sony is that they put in in their phone cameras. Or at least on my Sony Xperia 1 iii. It's awesome. I feel like if should be easy to add to the cameras with firmware.

I don’t get it. How hard is it to change your shutter speed? Why not just use custom presets for your different shooting rates?

@@JeffBourke Does the FX30 have shutter angles settings ? my understanding was the it didn't have it while being part of Sony's cinema line, which would admittedly be an odd omission.
@JeffBourke

@@maui_lou it doesn’t have shutter angle and it’s a complete non issue. You just change the shutter speed. It’s not hard. For anyone who has actually used the camera, the biggest problem is that you can’t whitebalance off a grey card when you’re using your saved settings.

@@JeffBourke I'm not sure what riled you up so much about it. Having an option to set shutter angles would make sense, it can save you time, you can check at a glance that you are at 180. No one said it was hard, but that's a pro camera, some people want it practical. Also no need to bring your high horses to the discussion, let them roam freely.

@@maui_lou sorry! I’m not mad. I just think it’s a high horse thing to pick on as it makes no difference. The FX30 has more, real problems that actually make a doffer to how you use it. Example, if you use a display LUT in log, the histogram changes! Annoying AF!

I’m having nothing but probs with my FX3. The flippy screen came loose and it powers off (then back on) at random. It’s been a complete lemon.

How long did you have it before it started getting like that? Just curious!

@@stevenkralovec The flippy screen came loose after 10 shoots. The 'power off / power on (randomized reboots)' issues took place after 1 year of use (maybe 20 shoots). I had both items fixed for $1300. They said they had to replace the entire motherboard + HDMI port + adjust flippy screen.
