@@jjhites9855 They used to not come with horizontal stabilizers and it was very easy to do a power over and lose lift. If you pull up fast on takeoff like a normal plane you can smash the rotor into the tail as well on many models. If you fly these in a conservative manner they're safer than single engine airplanes. Of course, it's really fun to fly these like a maniac so people do that quite a bit. The important thing is to keep the rotor loaded.

I lerv flying too as my Dad lets me sink into his rear cockpit, strapped and headed out doing some incredible stunts to show me his skills as well as often visiting his EXpat business friends in the midst of a jungle airstrip where many British & Aussie pilots (military & commercial) hang about for an afternoon break by their makeshift hangars. I was just a toddler then. My Dad had two planes to himself, the other is a 5-seater Cessna where he pilots my mum, me and sibling bro and one of another sis, to fly out & join the party crowd for a BBQ weekend with Expats in a Malaysian jungle. That looks awesome. First flying car? Not by a long shot. First actually practical flying car? This could be it. Like the first prototype in the background, most flying cars either look like cars with wings or a rotor bolted on, or they are unwieldy (and noisy) quadcopter monstrosities that only manage to prove the old R/C modelers' adage that anything will fly if you strap a big enough motor to it. What impresses me about this car is the small footprint, the way the rotor, tail and undercarriage fold in, resulting something that's actually car sized. This can easily go in your garage. And the specs are pretty good for a light aircraft.

After 12 years of development ( and more to come) i wonder what the total investment cost is in this and who is putting up the funds? Its going to be a VERY niche market, the ideal situation is to have your own castle with surrounding land big enough for a runway. PS i won't be ordering one.

Actually it is a solution to a very real problem the pilots call ‘get-home-itis’. A very large proportion of PPL pilots are not instrument rated and can therefore not fly in cloud or in the dark. So in you example you fly to your destination and then spend you time there constantly checking the weather. If the weather comes in you might be tempted to give it a go and get home. That’s when accidents happen. If you flew there in a PAL-V you simply drive home. That is the number one market this vehicle is aimed at and it’s way bigger than you think 👍

I have somewhat followed the flying cars as they have always intrigued me, I think its great that technology in aviation construction, power, and electronics have progressed and come together from the point of the 1960's Aero-Car to what the guys at Pal-V have created... it's great that the inventors have stayed together pushed forward through all the trials and tears I'm sure there have been a few for over 10 years to accomplish what they have. I wish them them best and can't wait to maybe get the chance to fly or I mean drive one of these ATV's.. and also see what the future holds! Not mentioning having both driving and PPL licences, where the second being much more difficult and costly to acquire. And how many drivers ever check anything around their cars? Some even forget to check if they have any fuel. I guess, this will be most appealing to current pilots, for the next few years?, maybe for commuting or pure fun after work? 😁 A new big boys toys. Unbelievable. I’d come across the Pal-V a few times but only in passing. As a PPL and car nut, this video was like Christmas and a Birthday. Great job, Ped. 😊 Those engineers are urgently needed at BMW. How they manage to engineer a car with two engines and a 100l fuel tank that can also FLY… but weighs a third as much as BMWs smallest coupe is a lesson they could share with Munich. Perhaps they could also offer some styling advice. So the PAL-V is €499,000. Presumably not including taxes. So well over £500,000. As an aircraft, its performance is respectable enough…250-300 mile range, 80knot cruise. As a car, 100 mph top speed, 0-60 in 9 seconds ish. It looks amazing and what a toy. If you have ALL the other toys, it’s a must-have. But to anyone having to spread a relatively limited amount of money across a few toys, it’s punchy. Very punchy. I hope they do well nonetheless - I can see where the money has gone. It’s just too much for me when for the same money I could have a new Caterham, a new BAC Mono, a lightly used BMW 750i, a used 991.2 Cab and change for a used Schweitzer 300CBi. Which is my current list - I’m halfway through it. Pal-V will just have to wait. 😊

GREAT INFO ON ALL OF THE ISSUES GETTING A FLYING CAR APPROVED.... My concept of the perfect flying car is a "snap on snap off" 1-person lite weight micro electric car with a separate top fitting powerful snap on/off drone. Like your first version 3 wheeler micro car with less regulations and just snap it on. When you get close to where you fly into you can snap off the car and drive to where you need to go. You own the cart but the expensive drone is rented and arrives from the drone port ready to go. Keep the cost low and always have a fully charged snap on drone ready to go. Lots of Drone Ports (Think the new gas station) everywhere storing drones ready to go. On a long trip you just stop at a drone port and switch out the drone for one fully charged. 99% of people could afford this! Keep it simple...... use what we have.... 99% of cars have one person in them. Small and lite. Once perfected this will totally disrupter old fashion expensive cars, clogging up highways and save environment at same time. Let’s snap on a lite cart to a powerful drone (like Volvocopter 18 blade super structure} and make it work for everyone. AI CONTROLS WITH GPS SHOULD MAKE THIS AN AUTONOMOUS PILOT FROM POINT A TO B...... JUST TELL ALEXIS WHERE YOU WANT TO GO........ Then the whole trillion-dollar highway infrastructure budget can now be used to bulldoze down slums and build quality affordable homes with a drone port on the roof….! WOW….! WE NEED TO THINK SMALL INORDER TO GO BIG! I think this is totally feasible right now for under $20,000 plus monthly drone rental fees? A lot better than $250,000 plus which no one can afford. Please make a basic model for everyone.

This idea of a flying car has been on the wish list for a long time but you've done a good job of identifying the difficulties, the big hurdle is needing a pilot's license. Getting one of these takes a while and quite a bit of money and that is for a 'private' pilot certificate, if you want to fly on rainy days you are going to need an instrument rating, more time and expense, and lastly since this plane has two engines, you'll need a multiple engine rating, more yet. Insurance for an aircraft is about that for a car but low hours pilots pay much higher rates and the insurer might require you to have an instructor pilot along for a period of hours at the beginning. The aircraft will need to be approved for instrument flight if you intend to fly on those rainy days and that will require an expensive instrument suite to meet the standard. This is a relatively low powered rotary wing aircraft so it won't set any great speed records and on a decent motorway it will probably go further in a given amount of time than by flying, remember too that at each end of the trip you need to deal with the departure/destination to airport trip. The men in blue frown on taking off and landing on a highway.

The first fixed wing roadable aircraft to fly was built by Waldo Waterman. Waterman was associated with Curtiss while Curtiss was pioneering amphibious aircraft at North Island on San Diego Bay in the 1910s. On 21 March 1937, Waterman's Arrowbile first took to the air. So how could PAL-V be first?

@@PetrolPed should be more models but as you pointed to cluttered rules ( plastics at one time were a bad idea for a car windshield/"glass" and that ment at the time it was a légitiment concern engineering/safety wise but in 2023 the plastic/composit is now actually safer the glass/silicon dioxide windows, listing could go on but you can see mu points ) and enforcement regulatiors/people see flying car's and amphibious car's as death traps ( so in some cases the engineering is sound but people filibuster/eggsotsion the flying car owners to give up trying to get tags & ect ) but i don't see it that way, hec i still think the pinto's wing/program ( and yes for now as the engineering hasn't been done it means that aerobic activity are a no-go and is under 222 mph in the air speed aka not the fastest GA/average-guy aircraft you can operate/buy but in someways is more practical ) and the boat got shafted and can work as i like both of them and mixed all 3 into one car 👍and i don't even like the ford's or the body's shape as i call it a frumpy looking car and that's before mod's/road-freeway going only model

@@fgb3126 very true... 15 20 and 40 minute cities are being forced upon us. When I first saw the PAL-V those years ago, my first thought was " this is now a flying car is going to be built" without wings but with helicopter blades that can act as a spinning gyro in the event of drive failure. You do not need parachutes really. Great to see these coming to market soon.
@ulbuilder
Жыл бұрын
Assuming the rotor blades and their controls never fail or malfunction a parachute is not needed. Weight penalty of a parachute is minimal and the cost is not significant. It's like paying for life insurance that saves your life instead of paying cash for your death.

Amazing work of machinery, but no way this will be mass produced. ITS TOO COMPLICATED and I fly sims. Sims are too complicated for most people, and there's no way they're loading their loved ones in this thing. Need to have a MUCH simpler interface, and until we do it won't be a thing. If you can't fly the thing while eating McDonald's and texting it won't sell. This needs a crew. Again, AMAZING engineering. Love to have one, but would hardly use it except as a cool thing to show off.

A remark on the flying cars in general. A flying car can fly. Fly over high mountains and sea, and land on an airfield and thereafter drive over all existing roads in the world. Compare that footprint on a map. This is essentially different compared to other transport. (train, car, plane). The transport envelope is much, much greater and very finely meshed. The technical challenges of building are high, however. Flying mass, folding mechanisms, and road and air legislation togheter in a limited size and for an appropriate price. The price is compensated by the transport envelope, which is really unlimited. The A5 seaplane sells a holiday dream and a 2 seat electrical flying drone cannot drive over the highway with 130 km/h, a flying car sells real useable transport. Hence it is another class. Only the moon is out of reach. So: Think out of the box.

Great video BUT you've just shown why flying cars will never be a thing until they're totally autonomous. I used to hold a PPL and flew Cessnas. There is nothing truly difficult with the 'ground school' exams which are roughly A Level difficulty, R/T was one 2 hour lesson, and flying isn't hard (used to be 38 flying hours for a PPL). You do need Real Discipline though which is sorely lacking on our roads. Just imagine rush hour or the school run. On second thoughts, I'd rather not 😱

And of course the American Enemedia reflexively mocks Pres Trump's vision to back the development of "flying cars," derisively comparing them to futuristic flying autos a la the"Jetsons" series from the 1960s. (One might ask why the press have avoided any reference to Doc Brown's revelation in the "Back to the Future" trilogy: "Where we're going, we don't need road.") Given a choice between a future dominated by environmentally ruinous electric cars or cleaner fly/drive vehicles, my bet is upon the latter.

as a non-aviator who watches aviation videos of all types... the first PROBLEM I see is spatial visibility in the air and landing... you're setting down IN a cockpit... The amount of aerial visibility in the FlyDrive Gyro Copter is much greater then the Flying Car... and both are kind of cramped... and you probably don't want to just park it "out in public" going to work or to the shopping mall... LOL... also, will you be legally restricted to taking off an an airport?... what if you're out on the open road and want to fly up to see something, like the grand canyon or stone hedge from the air? or what if you're flying and want to land and there are no airports or clear fields... I'm thinking it will be illegal to land on any public roadway... I see a lot of collisions in the future of these things... and of course, this is a rich mans TOY...

You know, i like that body as a road car, i'd buy one that doesnt fly, i wonder what the fuel economy would be without all that drag hanging on the top and back, i'd imagine that 23MPG might bump up to 32, not exactly impressive, but decent for a first go when the goal was not fuel economy whatsoever
