Hay Bob I'm a locksmith. You still need the combination to open that safe. That key you found is called a daylight key or "convenience key" that means you dial out the combo and then turn your key to open it and to lock it during the day you leave dial alone and just use the key so you can get in and out of the safe quickly without dialing the combo every single time. At night you would lock it with the key and the spin the dial so now it double locked. Try and find a reputable locksmith in your area and see if they can come open it with an auto dialer that way you can still keep and use the safe.

Pre-1982 pennies were 95% copper compared to the 97.5% zinc ones minted until now. A lot of people saved/hoarded the 1982 and prior cents. At current melt value for copper each cent is worth nearly 2.9 cents. There may be some collectors value if there are older pennies if they weren't already searched for key dates/collector value coins. Might want to find somebody to go through them... That safe is awesome, hope there's something worthwhile inside!

Bob, I was a coin collector as a kid and very much into it in the late '70's. The switchover to zinc occurred in 1982--during which year both copper and zinc cents were minted; from 1983 forward all cents were zinc. So those 1980 cents are still copper. However, by 1980 the U.S. minted literally billions of cents each year, so nothing of that vintage is likely to be rare or valuable from a collector's point of view; the only premium such coins carry is probably their raw copper value. All bets are off, though, if you start finding older dates, varieties, "S" mint marks, or anything like that. Happy searching! I've been enjoying the saga of your move.

Pennies before 1982 were all copper. Mid 1982 they went to copper plated zinc planchets due to the rising cost of copper which is why they are so darn heavy. Depending on how old and the condition, some may be worth more than face value. ( Of course they all are, but as coins some dates are preferred. Also any with S mint marks are worth more since the San Francisco production runs were far less than Philadelphia or Denver.

You guys have got it all wrong. That safe has a Sargent & Greenleaf 8400 MP lock on it with a dial check lock. The key is ONLY used to lock the dial to prevent someone from either locking the safe accidentally or turning the dial to unlock it without authorization. That lock is a manipulation proof lock. This is the locks the US government used to use on their classified and top secret safes before the Kaba X-06 series type locks were made. You are not going to get into that without a professional safecracker. Standard Manipulation attacks will not work with this lock. Whoever had that safe before you knew what they were buying. OK. Now that that has been said. The key part is unlocked. You don't need a key to unlock it. The dial is already unlocked. The turn thing in the middle of the dial is the butterfly knob. This is used only after you have dialed in the correct combination, return the dial to zero then you can turn the butterfly and rotate the dial past zero to open the lock. The standard combination for this lock from factory is 50 - 25 - 50, turn to zero, turn the butterfly then turn to the right to pass zero to unlock. It's highly unlikely to be that combination but you never know.

Prices for uncirculated 1980 Lincoln cents remain under $50 in MS-66RD, usually selling for between $15 and 25. MS67RD coins generally sell for between $100 and $150. A plus designation multiplies the value more than tenfold. An example certified MS67+ sold in a Heritage auction for $1,620 in September 2019. Another example in the same grade sold for $2,233 in the Heritage auction at the January 2017 FUN Show. You may have some of these because people were hoarding these between 1980 and 1984 because the mint saw an extreme shortage of them

That’s a cool find! The chances of what you have in there is mostly common change. I’d go thru them just to pull out any wheats, Indians, or anything that may have an error. But in general you have common cents. The change from copper to zinc happened in 82, about half way through. There are 8 varieties of 1982 cents, some are copper and some are zinc. Now.. in reality there are 7 varieties, but an 8th has been found. It’s a small date D Denver minted, that’s copper. All small date Denver cents were supposed to be only zinc. Only 2, that I know of, have been found. First, you need to find every 1982 D, sort between small and large date, then weight each small date D.. it should weigh 2.5, a copper will weigh 3.1.. that’s the big money… also.. 1983 should be zinc but copper have been found! Also 3.1.. there’s a tolerance, very minute, that’s allowed so 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 can also happen. That’s just two to look for that’s big money. Copper is rising in value BUT it is illegal to melt copper cents. What no one knows tho :-) any other questions just ask away. I love coins!
