I often thought of building a fairly large weighted scale model of the Titanic hull out of clear Lexan with adjustable water tight doors and opening in the bottom so I could stage it sinking with different settings. The watertight bulkhead would have to be at the correct deck heights too. Probably at least five feet in length to be workable. This video brought it to mind again. Thank you for sharing this.

Hello, first off, I really appreciate your videos about historic ocean liners and welcoming stories other than the one story everyone knows about. I am 15 years old and thought to ask if you like to hear my story on the costa Concordia when it sunk? I was 6 years old going on vacation to Rome to see the historic sites. The Colosseum, Vatican, and traveled down to Civitavecchia to visit the Roman thermal bath complex. On January 13, 2012, I was eating pasta at the diner. I remember my mom getting up to ask the waiter to get me and herself a to go box. He gave us the box, received the check and then a minor jolt. It felt like a small earthquake. Now i don’t remember everything, but my mom and my dad does know a bit more so I’m telling all of our story. Like all of it combined. So on the night of January 13th, the Costa Concordia struck a rock off the island of Giglio. I felt a jolt, often my dad said it felt like a 4.0 earthquake. Immediately there was a dead silence for about 25 seconds. People were confused, I remember someone to the left of me said was it an earthquake? And his wife said how could have there been a quake on a ship. Then the captain made an announcement to remain calm. Just a minor technical difficulty. A few minutes have gone by and then the waiters and crew members got us to get up and go up deck. My parents were so confused because to them..it was a minor technical difficulty, like something in the bridge, so we all didn’t know why we had to go upstairs. At 22:10, apparently the boat turned south. In my memory, I remember seeing a bunch of people crowded in the stairway that takes up to the lifeboat deck. Btw when I was 5 I started getting into the Titanic. I actually watched the movie in December of 2011. I also remember when my family and I made it outside, the boat was off its axis. It apparently listed 20 degrees. My dad wanted us to go to our room. So we went back inside and went in our room. I jumped on the bed and remember hitting my head. My parents weren’t happy lol 😂. We started getting ready for bed. I put my pajamas on and my mom got ready for bed. My dad got the TV on, but had trouble starting it. He asked for room service to help it get on, someone came and told us that the Captain announced there was an electrical problem. An hour went by and we were all asleep. Then a knock, I got up and looked at the little window in the door, it was a crewmate and a bright light behind him. He was wearing white. I saw people and I believe they were wearing life jackets. I didn’t know what to do, I remember walking back to bed and waking up my dad first. As my parents explained, my dad got up and opened the door, a crew member by the name, Tomas asked why we were in our rooms because there was an emergency order from the Captain, Francesco Schettino to get a life jacket and head to deck 4. So we all got up, got dressed, and headed to deck 4. There was a crowd of people. I was so tired, I sat down on the stairs and kept falling asleep, but very 8 minutes I had to take a step upward. So while we were asleep, apparently the captain ordered everyone to go on lifeboats the ship was sinking but a couple hours before it was considered an “electrical problem.” Like why do they lie to us? I can’t believe I was on a sinking ship. Actually I wasn’t scared. In my mind, I remember thinking, “this was cool.” I pictured myself on the titanic, I realized what was happening while visualizing Jack and rose running for their lives as the water rushed through the hallway. So I thought, was this happening downstairs? I started to wake up a bit and according to my mom and dad, I kept asking them questions if the ship was going to split in half, if the lights will go out? Apparently I tried to get a crew member’s attention and asking him if the ship will sink like Titanic. My dad said he said no and then he announced for everyone to stay calm. Finally after a long time, I made it to the lifeboat deck, pretty much all the boats were launched…..so that actually sucked…all I can remember is it was cool I was in a sinking ship. So how can I remember all this, my mom told me things, my dad told me things, I remember things, and my dad took some video and photos of the sinking and what was happening. I’ll post a video of it if I can find it, it was off my dad’s old computer. The files are hard to download. Oh by the way I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA NOW AND I SPEAK ENGLISH AND I WENT ON VACATION BACK IN 2012, I LIVE IN THE US. Okay with that said and done, let’s go back to the story shall we. So there were 2 boats being launched, my dad described to me he saw the waterline because we were towards the stern and water was reaching over the railing were the lifeboats were launched from. The crowd of people moved upwards and that’s when I was separated from my parents. Now I can’t remember a lot from this but I wrote it down while I was in 2nd grade what I remembered because now I can barely remember things I wrote down. So I was asking where my mom was…I was with a man and he was with me trying to help to locate my parents, but as the ship was listing further and further we were forced to go on the side of the ship and walk on the side. If you seen a documentary where people were walking on the side of the ship from a helicopter, apparently the captain left where 300 people were still on board. Rephrasing it, I lost my parents and 30 minutes went by until had to walk on the side of the boat I think, it wasn’t that long. I remember seeing a dark outline of the Costa Concordia’s bottom. Lights were given out so we can see where we were walking. Now the ship wasn’t completely sideways, it was a little bit, to the point where we couldn’t walk on the decks, we had to walk on the walls at this point. I got off the ship and was on the island. When I got on land, I was really upset, I was desperate for my mom or dad. I found another family with kids but they spoke a different language, Italian maybe, French? I don’t know. We were on the island for a long time. I waited a long time, I must of been asleep because when I woke up it was daylight with the same people standing up. The man was next to me and my parents next to him. I was happy. So when my mom and dad were separated from me, they were forced to go a certain direction into one of the last boats. They were in a boat wondering if they would see me again. When they were on the island, by a red lighthouse, they were trying to look all over for me. They ended up running into a man with a kid who was asleep next to him, it was me. So in the morning we were gifted an inn to stay at with a view as in the photos, the Costa Concordia was completely shoved into the ocean. We see stuck on the island for a couple days as it would have anyways. We boarded another ship, I don’t remember the name, none of my parents can remember, but we safely made it back to Rome….and boarded a flight ✈️ back to California…LAX. I was safely back home. Now I’m 15 this year and will be 16 on January 8, 2022. That was my story on board the Costa Concordia. Hope you found it interesting and added more info on the sinking as well as what the experience was like other than the documentaries and books documenting it. I really like your channel because you explain ship stories really well. You very creative with your words and you articulate your worlds well. I know you made some videos of the Costa Concordia and I spotted the man who was with me walking down the hallway in the Costa Concordia documentary on KZitem. This could be an idea down the road. Hope you had a merry Christmas and have a happy new year. Thank you, my name is Quinn. Hope you found it interesting and I’ll gladly send you some footage based off my parents videos

Hey, Quality! An excellent firsthand documentation of the chaos' great fear E V E R ! ! I also became fascinated by the Titanic when I was just wee. I first saw it in "A Night to Remember" A 1958 British adaptation of the novel written by Walter Lord. All I remember from that movie was was the boat standing completely vertical (this is shown from the perspective of people that had gotten lifeboats, so it was at a distance.) I don't think I became traumatized until prolly my Pops explained the "not enough boats for all, the water temp dilemma and how many perished". It was so bad, that for a time I wouldn't even go in a motorboat! I still will NEVER go on a cruise (they call them floating hotels...right? I'll just go to a land based one! lol) Anyways, there are a couple things I either misunderstood or just plain missed in your retelling. In all the confusion, I am going to assume that you did get aboard a proper lifeboat; now were you still alone or had you been reattached to yer folks. (You seemed to stress just how sleepy you were and that is understandable!) Good Grief!!! (I'm getting anxiety! lol) Also, can you clarify about "the island"? Was this the same one we all saw on the TV or a different one? And finally, since you had flopped out earlier, did your parents discover YOU first (while you were still sleeping) or did you find each other at the same time? I highly recommend watching the movie I mentioned and read the novel (it's not very long) Now, they aren't completely accurate anymore, but they did the best they could at the time. If you ever get a chance to go to a Titanic Exhibition, I highly recommend that too! I went twice! Amazing, I was utterly spellbound. Anyways, I'm so glad you made it off a wreck not caused by a big ass rock but by astonishing negligence. It sounds like yous have documented your experience well, but (just a suggestion) anytime you get even the smallest "flash" of a memory...write it down like ASAP. One lil' "flash" can end up becoming a blazing light!! It was an honour to talk with you. All the Best, Mr. Quality! \m/ Addendum: If you are...adventurous enough to get back on one of those "floating leviathons" then some advice KNOW your "Muster Station" like that back of your hand. Clean and Sanitize hands ridiculously, Be sure you are in A1 shape (body AND mind), read up on what to eat and what to avoid and (for my sake) please stat the hell away from the fences that keep you from "Swan Diving" Anchors Away, Laddie! :)

I was obsessed with the Titanic since I was 4. My first cruise ship I went on was the Costa Concordia. Since I was so young, I couldn’t comprehend a lot what was happening. When I grew older, I realized oh my goodness I was on this thing and so I tried to write down any memories into a story while listening to the other halves of my parents and Thomas, he was the man who saved me as explained in the story I wrote down before this comment. Maybe as a finishing touch I’ll give you some personal footage my mom took as they pulled away from the capsized vessel. It’s crazy to think now, woah this happened in clear view. And you explained more info and I was like, YEAH I REMEMBER THAT. Lol 😂 anyways ifs it’s not too much to ask, since you already made a few Costa Concordia videos if this could be a video idea or something. Either way I’d be happy to share you more details too

I own one. Have had it for almost a quarter century now. I also still have the original box, packing, and booklet. The real fun is to take it to a swimming pool that's at least 8 feet deep, but preferably a 1o foot foot deep Olympic sized pool. Why? Because the sinking dynamics is really interesting to watch, especially the bow which, at least on mine, mimics very eerily the planning motion that the real Titanic's bow made. The stern is a bit weird because it only sometimes would spin about as the real stern section did.

It's interesting that when you scale it down to this size you can see the mechanics of what took 2.5 hours in the real incident. Slow at first as the water comes in slowly and then faster and faster. Once the bridge went under it only took like 8 minutes for the rest of the ship to go and that is perfectly illustrated here with this toy. I would bet that if you scale the flooding of the model to the full ship the times would match very closely.

Hi, interesting toy. I don't recall seeing those in the UK. The model ship behind you, is that the Lego Titanic or another version?

I actually got one of these for my 14th birthday back in 2018. It was in almost pristine condition too. I have no idea where it went though, it's probably buried in a closet somewhere... This video has made me want to find it! UPDATE: I found it a few months ago. So pleased to know where it is again!

Kinda messed up when you think about it that this is a toy based on an event that has a large loss of life. Ahh the 90’s… when nobody cared lol

Larry Life is actually planning on designing a model similar to this model. There's going to be a few key differences to what his model is going to be vs. the late 90s model

I used to sink Titanic made of Lego when I was a kid. I also drew a lot of that ship sinking, this made a couple other kids rolling their eyes because I (and a friend or two) had the habit to bring small boats to school and sink them, either in the bathroom sink or outside, in the winter there was some kind of water channel under the snow (and yes, every year, me, and a bunch of other kids, got bad case of cold because we went too "far" in the water, thus having wet feet...)

I had a couple toy boats that were roughly the shape of Titanic's bow and stern (one was a speed boat, the other was a tug). When I would play in the tub, I would stick the two together and pretend both were the Titanic sinking and splitting apart.

"TOY" Titanic "MODEL". You could have called it a "Toy Titanic", or a "Titanic Toy", or a "Model Titanic", or a "Titanic Model". But using both terms "Toy" and "Model" makes one of them superfluous. And annoying to the ear.

Even the forward funnel comes off just like on the real thing. But this one just pops off. On the actual ship, the forward funnel toppled over when it crashed into the ocean.

I’ve got a what if for ya. I’ve been interested in Titanic since I was a little kid after I picked up Robert Ballards Book in elementary school I’m 36 yrs old now and I’ve always wondered and thought of ways she could’ve been saved or the sinking delayed even longer. I guess I really have 2 what ifs lol I’ve heard about crews lowering mattresses down the side of the ship to try and block the flow of water before which seems far fetched but 🤷🏼♂️And 2nd what if Titanic had started sailing towards the California? Just to get closer and or get the attention of the crew. I know this would of likely accelerated the sinking but just a thought. Anyways I enjoy your videos and the way you break down your thoughts facts and theory’s.

If anyone who has one will indulge me, how long is it? The molded plastic looks very similar to the 1/700 scale Academy kit. I wonder what the internal geometry looks like because I’m thinking you could 3D print a new lower hull for the existing kit with the calibrated leaking components and modify the existing kit to make your own so you don’t damage a collector item playing with it.

LOL, that's got to be the worse bad taste toy ever! However, it clearly had a positive affect... so... not so bad... I guess. Educational in any case. ( at least it didn't come with submersible people. OMG what a thought! )

As a kid back in the 90s there was this first person titanic game, for windows 95, I don't remember the name of the game, but you could explore the whole titanic while it was cruising and you got to witness the sinking of her, it was all 3d and in first person view. I played that game for hours finding new areas every playthrough. I hope someone can relate and knows what game I'm talking about.
