That's what was so frustrating about him. Even before his mental collapse-- back when he was shooting a legit 62% on free throws, which isn't good (obviously) but is too high for a "Hack-a-Ben" strategy-- coaches were saying his complete unwillingness to take jump shots was wrecking the spacing. Even if he can hit only 35% of them, i.e., be average, he would force defenses to respect it instead of sagging off of him. But he took only ELEVEN non-buzzers, all in a 2-year period (2019-20 and 2020-21). He should've taken 1- 1.5 per game.

NBA teams value ceiling over anything due to their confidence in their org’s ability to develop talent combined with the possibility of that talent turning into a superstar player. You see it all the time - the best college players in their 4th year are wayyyy better than the best freshmen, but because their upside isn’t as high they go undrafted. Ben Simmons is a generational physical talent, so he ended up going #1 as teams were confident he would pan out

@@JaredProd30 wtf you on about bro, sure simmons has good defense and passing, its just that you need to shoot the ball in a basketball game. sure he can lay it up good and dunk it home, but his lack of shooting was exposed on that 2nd round playoffs where he got hack a shaq'd real good. his weakness had been exposed, the best thing to correct that was to actually make shots, what he did was throw a tantrum instead and make even less shots. look at Sochan, he had terrible FTs at the beginning, then he changed it to that weird one-handed shot, it looks fucking weird but it made his free throw numbers go higher. Ben Simmons, in the face of criticism, instead of proving them wrong, just faltered and wanted out. or rather, he didnt care at all about his game Edit: he has been given a chance, he went to the Nets, even Kyrie defended him saying "give him time" but he just didnt care to improve
