Different than Ballentynes a budget fashion store in small towns. Ballantynes Christchurch is as you say a family owned department store with history and quality goods which indeed had a disastrous fire in 1948. The Ballantyne family held the Christchurch inner city together after the big recent quakes for which I will always admire them and shop at their wonderful store.

curls the real hidden town is the republic of Whangamomonga on the Forgotten Highway, they are a self-declared republic that tried to succeed from nz in 1989 due to not liking being put under the jurisdiction of the new local council when they redrew the lines. in the past, they have had a sheep and a dog as their president but currently, the position is held by a man, a wacky place with the pub as their government house (very very small 5 building type town)

Bruh, what are you talking about? Masterton ain't the hidden town. Sure, you drive over the Rimutaka's to get there from Wellington, but if you're driving through Wairarapa to get to Wellington or go up to Hawke's Bay or Gisborne, Masterton is on the main highway along with other Wairarapa towns such as Carterton and Greytown. The true hidden towns are Marton in Manawatu, and Wairarapa's Martinborough.

Hi Curls. If you travel up to the Far North of NZ to a very small village called "HOREKE",you will see such povety, broken down homes with people still living in some. This small village, buit mostly on the Hokianga harbour,is where Im originaly from,we had a Camp Site,Post office,Petrol station,4 Square store, pub, and speed boat regators every Easter up and down the harbour and wood chopping events. Now nothing for many years mainly because the old folk died off and the young generation simply dont care how they all live up there. Its a real shame how a once busy and bright village has become.Only one or two people up there are trying to bring some flavour back, with craft shops etc. But worth a visit if you are ventureing up that way sometime.Would make an excellent Doco. James.

@@nintendonut100 Well maybe to people in Manawatu.. My grandparents lived mostly in Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Horowhenua, my parents were born in Wairarapa, then I was born in Hawke's Bay and lived most of my life in Gisborne while occasionally visiting my grandparents in Wairarapa and Horowhenua, and I'd never heard of Marton until I went there at 36 years old because I was visiting a friend in Bulls and was told Marton had the nearest supermarket. So it can't really be that well known if I went 36 years not ever hearing of it while sometimes even being nearby. LOL There's also the fact that it, like Martinborough, isn't exactly on a main highway. You really have to be going there to come across it. Or somewhere nearby that doesn't have a supermarket. LOL

This is what a lot of biggish towns in NZ were like 50 years ago. Either not quite big enough or a City Council with the balls to keep the malls and big box stores out. Decent sized population but more importantly a large rural population surrounding them, pumping in the $$. Farmers generally dont do malls or big box stores, they call up the same business their granddad used, knowing they will have what they want and will send it right out.
