I really think it always boils down to money -- earning a living, it takes money to live in this world -- so unplugging is a luxury to those who struggle to even pay rent or buy food, I'm glad that Mara has enough money to throw all caution to the wind. Lots of people need a rudder and stability.

You don't have to do it in such a drastic or extreme way but sometimes taking an hour,a day a weekend or a longer retreat or respite or daily moments to tune in and connect. Its not all or nothing

Walking away- voluntarily or involuntarily- from any situation that has defined you , whether it is a business you founded, a job you took pride in, a relationship you cherished, a home you loved, a country you fled , or a culture that you left behind, takes a tremendous amount of courage and fortitude regardless of your financial circumstances or “status” in life. Every human being experiences loss. Every human being changes identities throughout their lifetimes. Regardless of whether you lose your identity by choice or force - letting go of one way of being in the world to make space for a new way of being in the world is hard on the human psyche. It is emotionally wrenching to find yourself groundless and in a liminal state, uncertain of what comes next. I have compassion for anyone, who ,for whatever reason , finds themselves in a situation where they cannot continue doing what they have long done , cannot continue living as they have lived , and must embrace a new reality. Thank you for this moving interview with Mara Hoffman. I actually have a couple pieces of clothing that she designed. I didn’t know anything about her when I bought them. I just loved the items and felt good wearing them. As someone who purchases clothing with the intention of building a sustainable wardrobe of good quality that will last for years , I will now hold those pieces in even greater regard now that I know more about the integrity of the designer and her commitment to a purposeful life. Walk in beauty and peace, Mara, Elisa, and Lily. Thank you for being.

I so understand this... I stopped making and selling clothing to other people in 2016, because there are so many clothes going to waste and I didn't want to add to the waste pile. Now I make clothing for myself from used clothing and scraps + remnants II get from salvage groups.... keeping scraps out of the waste stream as much as can while expressing myself.

What an awesome interview! I worked at Eileen Fisher in corporate for 13 years, and Mara reminds me of the next generation of leaders-though on a smaller scale. I love her message and personal direction. I also really admire what you and Lily are doing at StylelikeU to promote inclusion, sustainability and love. I remember you fondly, Elisa, when you lived on Pinecrest and our oldest children were toddlers...prior to Lilly joining your family on the planet! You were always so warm and welcoming. I'm not surprised to see you doing this important work now...keep it going! All the best to you both! Much love, Julie

Thank you, Mara, for identifying clothes as ONE of the paths towards seeing ourselves in a loving light, because certainly for me, that is not the path and it's good to hear that qualified, particularly by a woman.

thankyou, mara, for being a trailblazer and willing to leave the path. i also had dreams and did what i could to be in fashion, sadly it never panned out but i find comfort in u doing this, in exiting a broken system. i content myself in doing little projects for friends and fam when they need it. the future of fashion really is the past. only making things out of necessity, and upcycled if possible.

. She was successful in her brand , enjoyed what she was doing and managed to make it sustainable ,so what was the moral qualm? I don't agree that we're cut off from nature to need to work in order to secure food and shelter and to have the luxury to go off and "find yourself" without a backup plan conversely seems like a uniquely human and first world phenomenon .

whats wrong with talking to trees? or at least communing with nature, indigenous communities and cultures have literally done this for millenia, its only a modern mind that finds this so strange and "hippy"or weird.

@@upendasana7857 humans have done all sorts of dumb $h!+ For millennia and it doesn't mean we should still do it today. It's like saying that just because people believed that the sun was raised up by a sun god everyday, that we should still worship a sun god. Talking to trees (and thinking they hear you or converse) is objectively weird.

saw that pirate ship ghosting over-under-over, if that, along the circular edge? now i want to look into kalypso! feel like i’ve felt it too at some earlier point this year that had me google something about the tectonic plates that only left me with more questions. felt abrupt, struck a fright but sensed an understanding in that ultimately, felt like i had just never noticed not a brand new! it‘s interesting to me i‘ve been listening to albums front to back for quite a while but it has shifted over to often feeling prompted to listening from somewhere on the inside to somewhere on the inside again. not with every album but that tendency has opened up for me! and i hear HAIM doing their right now, right no-w.

what you find "loony"artists, poets and shamans and indigenous cultures all over see as perfectly normal and its loony not to take time to commune with nature or that trees have something to teach us by their sheer presence

There is no doubt that this woman has privilege and when people say she had the privilege to go off into the woods and opt out of the rat race to a certain extent but no matter how pressed we maybe in our lives, paying bills and trying to make rent or bills etc there are always moments we can take that time to connect with nature or come back to ourselves in some way through meditation or a walk in nature or some yoga or finding a gardening or wildlife project we could be involved with that allows us to breathe and take a monet to reassess and connect with whats important to us. I use to think like that and look at others lives who could afford retreats or lived in beautiful houses and could go on expensive holidays and workships to "find themselves"but in actual fact unless we are absolutely ina crisis or a warzone or in really dire straits then there are usually always times we can take to connect in some way, with nature, journalling, taking a walk, guided meditation talk....taking that time forst thing in the morning before work 5-10 minutes to stop and take a breath. Thats exactly what shes saying is that we all get caught up in this rat race to some extent even when you have oeny or wealth.Obviously it is easier for those with security of wealth etc but for our own wellbeing and mental health we all need to find and take those times to reset, refocus and tune into our deepest selves. I use to think it was a luxury but sometimes I simply did not want to stop and be present with what I felt because it was uncomfortable and scary and made me feel anxious and it was better to be distracted even with working a long hours because it stopped me having to think.

I think it's weird when people talk about themselves in the third person. also who cares? why not talk to people who aren't famous or celebrities or famous/celebrity adjacent? there are other people out there who have done things and who have learned things and have life experience and who are interesting. rich famous people aren't the only people who matter in fact I think they matter the least, why is their advice and or experiences so important or more interesting? again I ask: who cares?

I think it's interesting and I care because I have worked in the Fashion Industry for years and I am a big fan of Mara's work. To see an iconic brand close it's doors- I want to know they why behind it and I am thankful for her insights. If you don't find it interesting you could watch something else. Not everything is for you and that's ok. 😊
