In this extensive and wide-ranging interview, the late Prof. Henry Stanley Mwaniki Kabeca, who taught history at Kenyatta University and Egerton University before he retired and has published extensively on the history of Embu, Mbeere and Chuka peoples, tells of his early life and education at the height of the Mau Mau war, and how he took Mau Mau oaths and became a scout for the fighters. Significantly, he provides a rare account of the death of Mau Mau General Kubu Kubu, a fearless man so notorious that white colonialists felt compelled to parade his lifeless body around the villages and to drink to his death. He also talks of Gen Kairu Muchavu of Embu and Gen. Kassam of Kirinyaga. Prof. Kabeca's interview situates him right in the middle of the freedom struggle as a veteran, a survivor and a commentator given his knowledge as a historian. Educated at the University of East Africa, he got his PhD from Dalhousie University, Canada and is the author of many books including: Ndai, Nthimo and Ng'ano Iria Ukua wa Aembu, The Living History of the Embu and the Mbeere to 1906, Embu Historical Texts, and Catergories and Substance of Embu Traditional Songs and Dances.
