I had an epiphany about feeling gratitude and being happy in the moment. I'm HeathCliff, founder of @everyonematters. I woke up depressed, and determined to again climb up to the Observatory for exercise and do my 20 minutes of affirmations. I was grumbling and unhappy as I was walking up the trail, irritated that people weren't wearing masks and not keeping social distance - all while saying affirmations about love and gratitude!
And amidst my own awareness of my feeling of being unhappy and deprived, I had this awareness, this epiphany about the essence of gratitude and the state of happiness. It sounds so obvious, almost facile, but it hit me about focusing my energy on what I have, that I am grateful for things in my life, and to enumerate those things is comforting, it's real, and shifts attention and energy. It's the glass half-full versus half empty.
The epiphany was also how primal the state of gratitude is to our overall life and our bliss - to wake up in the morning and, as Irving Berlin once wrote in a song - "Count My Blessings."
Here's what I dictated on the mountain: "My soul chose this journey for my growth and healing. It is my journey moving forward to discover and learn and claim gratitude in its deepest essence and vibration, as the foundation of life, from which all else stems."
If we can feel grateful in the moment for our blessings, we can be happier in the moment.
