Paleontology researcher here: Mary Anning's life story is powerful and extraordinary. Despite numerous roadblocks in her life, she made incredible finds and contributed massively to laying the foundations of modern paleontology. It's good that she's been getting more attention and credit today, but the sensationalist romance in this movie is unnecessary and distracts from the main point of Anning's amazing, groundbreaking work. That's my big problem with this movie.
@bluekoala12
3 жыл бұрын
I get that, but I guess they had to find a way to make it “sexy” so a studio would accept to make it. After all it’s a business. Still, many people (like myself) have just learned from her existence and may research her and learn from her.
@christianv-h3278
3 жыл бұрын
@@bluekoala12 Not even talking about her fossils, that woman lost her dad when she was 11. Most of her siblings died. She and her family had to sometimes sell furniture to get enough money for food. _She was struck by lightning as a baby_ . I think all that, especially the last bit, would be attractive to studios. People are naturally attracted to tragedy. The story of a broken genius, who has sh*t thrown at her every step of the way is a tragic and powerful story, and would definitely interest people. Because the problem is, I see on social media (youtube, reddit...) - most of the comments regarding the movie are focusing on "oh what a beautiful romance", not Mary Anning herself, her amazing contributions and her tragic yet remarkable life.
@johnd5574
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it shouldn't have inserted this affair. There's no evidence that they had such an affair. The movie should have concentrated on all of the things we do know happened to Anning, many of which were tragic. It's also not entirely the case that she received no credit whatsoever. She was angry that wealthy men published her work as their own, but some scientists raised money for her and even obtained a small pension for her. In a "biography" movie, I'd rather know the truth about a person. I guess in the current Hollywood environment, they decided to wholly insert this affair and generally dismiss many of the kindnesses she did get from men who actually did care about her and her work.
@christianv-h3278
3 жыл бұрын
@@johnd5574 I agree with most of your points. Just one thing - she did get *some* financial help that got her somewhat out of situations where money was tight (e.g. Birch's auction, De La Beche's _Duria Antiquior_ painting). But it was very rare for her to get actual credit for her science. Anning was massively important to figuring out the presence of ink sacs in fossil squids, the fact that 'bezoars' are marine reptile coprolites, or the layout of teeth in Jurassic sharks. Rarely was she properly credited for those analyses and interpretations. Even today, the same Geological Society that snubbed Anning so often, still refers to her as "fossil saleswoman" instead of "paleontologist". She was actively contributing new knowledge and interpretations to a science that was in its infancy, so not calling her a paleontologist is quite an insult to her life and work.
@johnd5574
3 жыл бұрын
@@christianv-h3278 Oh, I agree for sure. She-was self-taught, and even modern academic institutions rarely if ever credit people who do the down-to-earth hard work in science. It's certainly better today than it used to be, but not much. I'm just saying that credit for her work wasn't totally absent, otherwise we wouldn't know about her at all, and there were some men who actively did things to help her financially. She was a foundational pillar of paleontology, and that in contrast to how she was treated and remembered would have been much more genuinely interesting than the cooked-up affair. It could've been a much more powerful movie, but they sort of downplayed that for other interests.

Mary Anning was one of my childhood heroes, so I’m not sure how I feel about this film glossing over her scientific accomplishments in favour of a completely fictitious love story.
