Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh joked that he was the first man to score a test century “on a UK” holiday after hitting 118 at Headingley.
Marsh also took the wicket of Zak Crawley on a topsy-turvy day in Leeds.
Earlier in the day, England headed into the lunch break well on top, having reduced Australia to 91-4 in the first session.
But a ferocious counter-attack from Marsh after the break quietened the Headingley crowd, until he was removed for 118 just before tea.
That proved to be another turning point as England’s bowlers turned it on in the final session of the day, bowling the visitors out for 263.
But the pendulum swung once again in before the close of play, as Australia reduced England to 68/3 to set up the game nicely heading into day two.
