I greatly enjoy all your videos but this was a very delightful change of pace. BTW, you're far too modest, you had some beautiful shots!

Don't feel bad here. I'm a landscape photographer for about 20 years. I can do it with my eyes shut. 3 years ago i decided to venture into portrait photos. That is a very hard discipline to learn. I never gave people photographers enough credit for the skill and creativity needed. Nice to see it go the other way around too. Thanks for the video.

Nice shots. You dont have to be great. It's the process, the exploration, the enjoyment. It gets better over time and you start seeing things in nature to photograph that you once missed.

Around 80% of what I shoot are portraits, but sometimes I do like to shoot macro and birds. It's my shutter teraphy. I spend hours in the gardens or in the wild without notice the time passing. I usually have great success shooting flowers, because I phototograph them like I do with people. I use to say that I do portraits of flowers. You should try it 😊

You have experienced the real joy of wildlife/nature shooting -- which is simply to have some solitude, exercise, and enjoyment of all the beauty that surrounds us in creation. By the way, the large bird is a Great Blue Heron -- they are amazing at catching fish. You got some nice shots I think.

Thank you for the bird identification- its name alone makes me feel like a more powerful photographer. 😂 it’s strange, this is the third day in a row. I saw one of these birds. And today I saw this bird three times.

Your lack of confidence is hilarious. But your humbleness and humility is admirable. Even with your professional work, you know it may not be the best ever in the history of the world, but it's still great. I for one am glad you shared because it gives me something to aspire to and it's just fun to watch you work while you share your thoughts and knowledge.

My best tip for wildlife is "stop looking at the scene, start looking at the light" Let the light and direction of the sun dictate where you look.

When you’re photographing for fun or personal work, it’s not about how great the photos are. It’s about how great the moments are. Really enjoyed seeing this side of you. Still can’t figure out what that chair was doing next to the stream😊

What a lovely video John. Interesting to hear where and what you got up to as a kid. Ha! There are some good photos here imho. I think it’s more important to enjoy the day and your photoing experience than anything. If you get a good shot that’s a bonus.

I thought I’d exclusively shoot birds when I picked up my first mirrorless camera this year. Stumbling on your channel piqued my interest to dabble in portraits and a little lighting-I’m just shooting family + friends, but I’m grateful to have more memories documented and try something new. I’d love to get my hands on an OM-1 one day, but even on my R7 I’m happy with my early results crossing over into portraits w/ “just” a crop sensor camera and learning a lot. Thanks for the inspiration to go for it, enjoyed the video!

The R7 is an amazing camera! Just keep shooting and playing with the light. The screwups are more important than the good ones.

Very nice video again, John and interesting to see your personal background. I think the “main problem” with nature photography is that nature itself can be so complex and overwhelming to even recognize a subject in it and work it out with photographic means. I've been trying for as long as you have, but it's just not my thing. Photographing people is so much easier for me. You see the person in front of you, focus on them, look for a certain facial expression or a pose, the right light, but it's just the one person that's in the picture. It's the same with architectural photography, which I love very much, the building, the interior, the light in it, the perspective, I personally find it much easier to capture all of that photographically because the object itself is much more defined from the beginning. I think good nature photographers concentrate on a certain theme in the first place and then look for it in nature on their photo tour and gain experience with it, which then makes their pictures look impressive.

I am the same way with portrait photography, horrible. My background is photojournalism, travel, and some nature/landscapes and some commercial product work. I have had to shoot a few portraits from time to time, and I always cringe especially when it comes to posing, I go blank, so I know where you are coming from.

@@kaskoPhoto Never say 'never'! Actually, you would probably enjoy the 75-300mm f/4.8-6.7. It's obviously not an optically fast lens, but is sharp, incredibly compact and lightweight (much smaller and lighter than your 40-150mm f/2.8). It is a great 'poor man's' wildlife lens. I own the 100-400mm for my bird/wildlife shooting, but when I travel and plan to hike some, I pack my 75-300mm and get some pretty amazing shots with it.
