Buy the latest Leica, Nikon, Canon or even Sony ( yaaakh ), leave it on the table for 10 years and come back too see the photographs that have been produced . What , no photographs? Ah its the photographer who makes the photographs and not the cameta. Camera is only a tool in the process. The yrick is to pick the best tool for the job and pay once.

I recently go back into photography after a maybe 5 or more year gap. I looked back over my photos from my old Canon EOS 7D from 2009, made a few edits and printed one or two of the shots professionally and they look just as technically good as the images i can get from my Fujifilm XT5. While i love my new fuji, if i was a smarter person i probably could have just got an old Canon 5D, or an older XT3 Fujifilm and things would have been fine. The elephant in the room is the truth, that gear is a mask for people who are simply not that creative or not that skilled at photography. It makes the guy who's entire body of work consists of long exposures of an old jetty over a lake, long exposures of a highway at night etc feel just as creative as people who can make amazing work with whatever camera they find laying around. I know that sounds harsh, and its rough to critize people who are trying, but lets be honest, the middle aged dentist with a Leica SL1 is rarely what you would call an artist.

Great Video! I couldnt agree more, i still have my first film nikon from high school because I'm so comfortable with it. As we progress digitally i think specs matter less as they have already been extemely sharp for so long. It's really about filters, lighting, color grading, other accessories etc. Im working on a similar video about my canon M50 mkii. Just subbed!

I’ve also been a hold out with my 80D and it’s been an amazing tool for my intermediate skills with some room to grow in. I’m also using the kit lens primarily (well, the other kit lens being the 18-135mm IS USM). Canon made some quality gear and watching your video is an absolute breath of fresh air amid all of the gear-oriented and upgrade-obsessed channels I’ve seen. Spot on video!

A lot of great photos can be accomplished with pretty much any gear. I think the gear thing becomes a separate fixation/fascination/obsession (G.A.S.) subsequent and secondary to ones' original interest in photography.

Many KZitem photographers (PhotoTubers?) do talk a lot about gear but I try not to listen. Of course, some gear is better than others but for someone who budgets, it is not helpful. It is the photographical equivalent of pay-to-win. I'll stick with my Kissx10 for a bit longer!

I have Nikon D610. I bought it 2016. I have built my kit around this body. Nikon lenses are second to non. I have seven lenses, coupled with the D610 produce superb images. 24mp is plenty enough as well. I have no need or desire to spend thousands on a new kit, only to get the same qaulity images.

Really love this one- the comparison you made between traditional art and tech based art was a great take. Traditional mediums like drawing and painting don't get scrutinized the same way tech based mediums like photography and videography do. That's definitely something I'll take with me whenever I get worried about the preconceived quality of my work due to using a out of date Vegas software rather than the current Adobe Premiere

Great perpective. I do more cinematography than photography, but I got a RED Scarlet-W in 2017, set it up to use as many lenses and possible, and kind of stopped caring about gear after that. If I can't produce something I'm proud of with the same camera the Hobbit was shot on, then I need to re-evaluate my career.

I finally upgraded my camera a few years back to the Canon M6 Mark II. Which even at the time was kind of an older camera but I had real reasons for the change that assisted me with justifying the purchase. I honestly don't think I'll buy anything else for at least another 5 years. Maybe longer

I have been a photographer for three decades. I will agree with you about upgrading for no reason. It took me many years to convert to digital from film. Because I believe in not rushing to upgrade. just for the sake of upgrading. The gearheads love to upgrade, for me, I have to have a good reason to upgrade.

If anyone asks me what camera they should get when starting out, more often than not, they’re seeking validation to spend more money on a system they want, not what they need. Most people don’t want to hear that a camera that’s nearly twenty years old, something like the Canon 5D Classic, is more than capable of delivering results they desire… the trade off is they need to learn the craft and do the graft. I’ve just invested in the 5DC and it’s a phenomenal camera. Shoot what makes you happy.

The best camera is the one you have on you or the best that you can afford. The thing that makes me laugh today is people are spending thousands on a camera for the best image quality only to edit the shot to look like they are taken with a 70’s film camera 🤣

Nice to see. I feel like once you have a decent DSLR it makes a lot more sense to add other types of gear, like I am going to get a dji mini 4 drone and some better audio equipment, a gimbal, remotes and filters. I have the 70d and I hated it until I got my sigma art lens! I would much rather have a full frame camera and I eventually will, but my camera has had much better output than alot of modern mirrorless i’ve used.

I agree! It doesn’t really matter what you shoot with. I can definitely say that gear will somewhat determine the quality of your photos, that’s where your skill comes in and the “quality” becomes arbitrary. It’s always fun to explore new gear though, and even if it is “vintage” it’s still new to you:)

I've taken my Nikon D40x out of the wardrobe and started using it again. It never got much of a chance because I upgraded just 2 yrs after I bought it new. Unlike later DSLRs and now mirrorless it's so simple to use and doesn't have video ( which I never use ). I'm sure your Canon does the trick for you relative to later versions, with all of the bells and whistles? 📷👍

The sensor capability didn't change that much during all those years. If you shoot mostly models or landscapes that don't move much, you'll not find a tremendous difference. Particularly if you shape your light with flash and such. What really changed a lot are image stabilisation (not considering MFT, they where top notch in this regard already back then), the AF capabilities, the burst rate and video quality. There are plenty of people that profit from any of those a lot and for them it is worth to upgrade. Personally I downgraded the sensor from a Sony A7RIII to the A6700 for the gain of improved AF and I couldn't be happier. I shoot little wiggly subjects that most of the times don't have the patients to be photographed. I need to be able to nail the AF in a second and this often in low light.

3:01 Oh, I thought as you did. But it turns out painters have the same arguments as to what tools are better than others, what brush brand/kind to prefer over others. Photographers are not unique in this it seems. Other than that, I appreciated you sharing your take. You are 100% correct in that cameras have stagnated in image quality progression - most cameras sold the past ten years (or even longer) are perfectly capable for producing outstanding work.

I really like this video and agree with a lot of the points you brought up! I was personally using the same Sony A57 from 2012 to 2020 and upgraded to a Z7 just for better high ISO performance since I shoot with natural light a ton; but I REGULARLY use my Panasonic GF1 from 2009 as a pocketable walk around/street camera, and a Fujifilm S2 Pro from 2002 when I want that dreamy CCD sensor goodness and to experiment creatively. It's all about the feeling you get when you put your card into the computer and pull up your files, not the megapixel count or the $12K lens sitting in front of your sensor.

Yep, agree with this. I have also had my 80D for about 7 years at this point. And fully agree with the sentiment that the gear you need is entirely based on your use case, and most people do not need the latest and greatest. I will say I have been looking at older full frames such as the 5D mkiii as I enjoy the way full frame cameras render deep blacks and color better than cropped. I have 3 lenses: the kit 18-135, a shitty 50, and the oh so fancy 70-200 2.8. The biggest thing I have learned from this is quality glass with good AF does make photography more enjoyable for me. (I mostly shoot sports/action outdoors) Thanks for reading my TED talk lol. Respond with yall's kit's and what ya do and do not like about them, would love to hear.

Until recently, I had been using the same camera for 15 years (Canon EOS 50D). I was having some issues with one of the dials not always working to the point where photography was no longer fun. I agonized over whether to buy an older but used camera (5D III or even IV) or modernize and go mirrorless. In the end I went mirrorless (R7). Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice, but this camera should hopefully last me another 15 years. I am enjoying the experience of the mirrorless camera for both photo and video work.
