I stopped fishing quite some years ago but used to use barbless carp hooks only and even then occasionally the mouth would bleed. I hated catching fish where all their mouths were distorted from scar tissue. Some of their mouths were so badly scarred you wondered how they could still feed. At the time there was some discussion about bent shanked hooks being the problem due to them rotating in the fishes mouth whilst being played and thus tearing the flesh in the mouth. I fished with one and three-quarter test curve rods and would play them rather than force them in, but you would still have the same problem. The only thing I used to do would be to treat the wound with an anti septic, I think it was called Klinik. As a matter of conscience I did it every time whether it was bleeding or not.👍

I'm not a fan of barbless hooks. I've used them where fisheries have barbless rules, but have seen them move around in the hook hold and cause nasty slices. A quality barbed hook (micro barb), I think is thd best all rounder.
@russelllutwyche5736
4 ай бұрын
Yes, I think you could well be right. On the discussion of barbless hooks versus barbed or micro barbed hooks, there was an argument that the barbed hook held its position in the fishes mouth rather than moving around and causing tears which could be more likely to happen with a barbless hook.

Great catches!! About the bleeding, its not the hook but the amount of pressure on the fish with rod and line. Heavy tackle can inflict wounds on the fish and so a bit lighter tackle takes away this issue. Done carpfishing for long and caught thousands and slowly moved from ultra heavy to soft rods for the sake of the fish. You can still use a thicker line on a soft rod with no problem and using thin small barbless hooks makes no difference also, as with a soft rod your hook is safe from bending out or ripping through the mouth of the fish. Love to see whats swimming around in that canal😁

Grass carp fight hard and fast, in a canal i guess having to bully them into the net doesn't help with hook hold bleed, should always carry and use a carp care spray for hook holds......I would only use micro barbed (most decent fisheries insist) and you wouldn't get the bleed if had room to play the fish, with a large grassy even half hour gentle battle it will still go nuts in the net and bitch slap you on the bank 😂

defo my fav way to catch carp freelining bread also use it sea fishing for mullet can be alittle fustrating but that makes it all the more enjoyable when you hook one, small tip for anyone whos not freelined bread before if u touch the hook bait on the surface of the water for a second or so it will make it abit esayer to get some distance dont leave it on the surface to long or it will fall apart on the cast. can esaly get bread 15-25 yards with some finesse and a light rod.

I use microbarbed hooks, still easy to get rid of but don't move around in the fish's mouth like a barbless will and never tear. I mainly fish large soft baits and use the Korda Mixa pattern rather than a curved hook. Also a softer rod, usually use a 2lb t/c Scope 6ft for roving fishing.

Congrats dude you beat my grass pb by 1.5lbs, lovely looking dark grass cap. Mine was also off the surface and like you i am very particular about how i hook the bread but very different still. I always use crusty fresh bread and scissors to cut a section off without squeezing the fluffy white part under the crust. This gives me a cube of un squashed fluffy white bread with a thick crust on top. I then hook the hook through the crust on top and back out the crust the same side with the hook point basically facing up in the air and exposed. When you cast it out the weight of the white bread cube on the bottom will roll the bait over so that the crust side floats on top and the hookpoint is completely out of the water basically exposed to the air but underneath the crust all the carp can see is the fluffy white cube of bread. They hook every time and with the hook actually pretty much above the water wise carp can sometimes take the bait a bit less cautiously. Sometimes i also use the scissors to cut the corners off too which gives it a more round bite sized shape. I use dog biscuits as loose feed and crusty bread on the hook, it can stay on the hook for hours while you wait for a wise carp in the margin for example.

Those grass carps used to be put in some places in Switzerland nearly fourty years ago. Now they seem to disapear as they died of age. One spectacular story happened in Berne. There is a really tiny pond in the city that is filled from time to time by rainwater. The neighbours complained about a terrible stench. Then they discovered the carcass of a giant grass carp. No one new about this fish. They said the fish was thirty pounds or more. The pond is really small and not in a park. Less than twenty yards long and wide. The grass carp could live there because those fish are mainly vegetarian.
