I always putt a layer of anti seize paste or grease to prevent galvanic corrosion between hanger and carbon frame. Everywhere where is carbon next to aluminium is increased chance of this corrosion.

To reduce the water ingress between the frame and the hanger, perhaps you could try applying a thin layer of grease on the derailleur hanger. Maybe something like Morgan Blue Aquaproof paste. I use this grease on my bikes when I'm doing my own maintenance on my bikes, I've used it for years and it's worked well for me.
@fede1275
6 ай бұрын
Yes, maybe I could also use a thin layer of thread locker?
@scottwelfare7311
6 ай бұрын
@@fede1275Yes, that sounds sensible too. The hangers can have a tendency overtime to come loose as well. Anti seize (copper) grease could be used alternatively on the threads instead, where there's a risk of moisture ingress and corroding the bolts which then become stuck. Using the copper grease though would require periodic checking to make sure the bolts are still secure. Unlike using the thread lock adhesive instead which would keep the bolts secure.

Thread locker is glue. Grease avoids corrosion. Cake that shit with grease. Just make sure it doesn't get on the chain if you wax it

That's a very good advice! Avoid lithium grease on your bikes and use an aluminum complex or calcium sulfonate based grease on your bikes. Lithium based grease seeps out with heat and water ingress and makes a real mess. I experienced disc brake pads contamination because of this type of grease. I now use a marine grade grease from Lucas and it's very resistant to water.

There something very wrong with those hangers if they disintegrate like that after 3 years. I’ve had original hangers on 2 of my bike for 12 and 13 years respectively that I only replaced last year. And I’m a 95kg rider who trains sprint intervals all of the time. Check out the BETD Components replacement hangers that are CNC machined in the UK and around half the price of what you bought. They have a range to fit Canyons.

About your chain with sticky links that caused damage, I searched your videos and didn't see one on chain waxing. I'm thinking you don't wax? Every time you wax, you move each link before putting chain back on. This is very easy. you just pull the chain over a round object, like a dowel. I clamp a small piece of pipe in my vise and use that. It takes 30 seconds to do. No way sticky links get through a waxing process.
@fede1275

I haven't done a video on chain wax as I am super lazy and I have been using Squirt with good results. Unfortunately on the day I had the issue, the chain on the Velobuild had not been lubed up with Squirt as the workshop while setting up the gears had applied some dry lube before I could tell them not to. I left it like that as I had to degrease before applying Squirt. So when I went out in the rain I believe that this compounded the problem as the dry lube would have washed up quickly.

Federico, I suggest smearing grease between the derailleur hanger and the frame in an effort to keep moisture out. I'm curious, what range cassette do you run on the Canyon? The reason I ask, is, I'm wondering if the hanger can be done away with all together. Or switch to an Ultegra/DA derailed. So long as there's sufficient clearance from the largest cog to the upper pulley, it should work. Attached is a KZitem video from one of my favorite go to bike mechanics for reference. Not sure if this is helpful but may be. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zZuC16ZnqaiInoYsi=7w_Ema04_9FgRzfr
