Back in the day around 2000, a band mate Steve Urbon in a very young American Steal band brought me a piece of yellow lined paper with a song on it. It sure was a great beginning for something, though it had a few questionable sentence's in it that I was sure would offend some, but it was all well... I worked on it and redid some of the lyrics and wrote the music for I Know Your Name. Down to Moondog studio in Kent, Ohio the band all went, with a bag full of wadded up dollar bills and change. I'm sure after many beers and aa few great local pizzas we learned the song and recorded it with Dave from Moondog and released it on our first album "It's Hard to Hide the Heroes in 2000 which to this day I know was an under-appreciated collection of great songs!
So speed up to 2023 Some of the words, phrasing and initial ideas in the song just never felt right with me. I pulled it back out and added a bridge and changed some of the thoughts and words to make it more relevant today.
I called Freddy Demarco, for guitar, Doug Matthews from American Steal on base, Holly my youngest daughter on backups and Doug the man Jenkins on percussion and recording. I still struggle singing it just right, but I am making baby steps. I then kicked in some guitar picking and strumming on the final song. Without my friends and family it would still be sitting on the clip board. So as always a big thank you for all who helped me with my passion!!!!
The song you now hear is what I have always thought the song should have been like, but back then we all liked and still do what we created. We're all getting older and are allowed to change.
Urbs and I at times were words and music and did come up with some catchy tunes. All good things come to an end as Urbs walked away with this part of his life and I moved on with my life and music.
I hope you all enjoy this pretty much acoustic version of "I know Your Name." I'm just happy I am finally getting a new old tune out. Stay tuned for my Island Cd by Michael K music and ASB's long awaited 3rd album. I know playing show after show with the band that we are like wine as we seem to just keep getting better or maybe our hearing is diminishing! Lol.
