It was hard to figure out how to open these inexpensive spice mills, but then it was easy after the first time (each). The Barnasinne are packaged as a pair of salt and pepper grinders; they're not the ones that fit over a spice jar. Hope this helps or reassures the next person.

Update, '23/2/21:
They worked for allspice, cardamom, and coriander. The grind was indeed coarse, but enough to break up these spices. Not so well for caraway; some of the seeds were broken into smaller bits, but many seeds just passed through.
The smell in my kitchen after these tests was wonderful. I think I'm also going to try to think of the spice grinders as scent producers, not just cooking tools. Maybe I'll buy extra, fill them with mixed spices, and keep each in a different room. With little trays or boxes to catch the ground-up bits.
