@@palmtreegal3 Good information, but when you're describing addresses it would be ตำบล (Tambon) = Sub-district อำเภอ (Amphur) = District They're not necessarily towns and are used to describe rural areas.

I think for geoguesser it may be easier to just remember the pattern of the conversion of Thai alphabet to English. Look for the 1st alphabet in the province name and read just the 1st syllable. The conversion is as below: Vowel sound = อ e.g. A (Ang Thong, อยุธยา Ayuthaya); อุ = U B = บ Ch = จ ฉ ช K = ก Kh = ข L = ล N = น P = ป Ph = พ ภ T = ต S = ส Y = ย R = ร can go 2nd (ตรัง = Trang, กระบี่ = Krabi) H = ห silent if in front of another alphabet (หนองคาย = Nong Kai) for vowel A = า or ำ or ะ or ั or connecting alphabet other than the above 2 (but some can be O which are too hard to explain e.g. Song Kla, Chonburi) AE = แ I = ิ or ี U = ุ or ู So ระยอง (ร=R, ะ=A, ย=Y) > Rayong สตูล (ส = S, connecting alphabet =A, ต=T, ู=U) > Satun I think this should be enough to get you through the name of the 77 provinces.

Tips : look for “จ.“ this stands for จังหวัด (province) like shown at 3:29 จ.หนองบัวลำภู Nong bua lum poo Also political election posters always include their province on them 14:14 for example “บึงกาฬ“ beung kan” located in the north east 16:00 Furthermore, if you spot a temple, always go to its front door. There’s always the province name written on there. 2:36 the lower line หนองบัวลำภู is a province Km markers always have province name on them 19:25 “ตาก” Tak located in the middle west and the lower one is “ลำปาง” lam pang which means we are headed from Tak to Lam pang. Hope this helps!

Nice! I learned to read/speak Thai fluently about 10ish years ago - if you keep practicing, it actually becomes quite easy to read. It's much more formulaic than something complex like English which breaks spelling/pronunciation rules all the time. หนอง (Nong) is also a very common prefix to a lot of places/towns (Nongkhai, Nong Bua Lam Phu, etc.) - you should probably just learn to recognize that one outright. If you keep practicing, I think you'll pick up it up very fast. Keep up the work.

Good luck on your Thai! In the first round, the จ. on the white sign does say the province, Jake was absolutely right. Should have checked where the loc actually was and compared the names, instead of just clicking on to the next round. Missed opportunity to learn, especially good for weird spellings. หนองบัวลำภู is Nong Bua Lamphu. The letter ห is sometimes a silent first letter in a consonant cluster, for reasons having to do with spelling tones - especially หน and หม are common.

21:52 you see 24130 at the end of the address. That's the postal code indicating southeast of Bangkok. Thai postal codes start in Bangkok (1) and rotate counter-clockwise around the country from the 6 o'clock position.

Marker explanation: on 19:31 the upper word can be the name of either อำเภอ (Amphoe) if you can't recognise this name as one of the 77 provinces just skip, or จังหวัด (province) which means the main town in the province (อำเภอเมือง Amphoe Mueang) and the number is how far in kilometer to the place. So this marker means this road is 8 km to Tak and 188 km to Lampang and then you can easily find the direction and the exact location on the road.
@govb123

Also there are 2 Amphoe that are bigger than the main town in the province and might come up more often in the road signs, which is Hat Yai (หาดใหญ่) in Song Kla province in the south and Pattaya (พัทยา) in the east.

1:00 I love those "rules" for how to remember each letter, that's exactly how I do things too 😄 And the funny part is that the most stupid/obscure rules are always the ones I remember best. (For instance I love the W with a small circle resembling a worm - meaning phobia - therefore "ph". Or the hANd and the hANGer 😄) I did this for all the flags and all the capitals of the world when I was young! I don't really remember them by those rules anymore but some of them stuck with me.. If I see a flame on the flag I immediately think about a grenade, so therefore it's Grenada 😅 Not that a flame has ANYTHING to do with grenades, but stupid rules like that just work anyway lol. You just need something concrete to remember stuff by, it doesn't REALLY need to make sense 😅

i'm not thai but i studied thai in uni! to me, reading fonts are a pain too, but you learn to identify patterns! (eg. how the s can look like a ร or ธ etc). i think it's good to know how some words can consist of silent letters, such as the silent ห at the front of some words such as the first province that yall saw for หนองบัวลำภู nong bua lamphu. pls do note that the "ph" sound isn't pronounced like a f, but as an aspirated voiceless p (though this is unimportant for reading geoguessr too haha) keep going guys!

I went to Thailand recently and also noticed that there were two different ways of writing their characters, where one of them used latin letters (sometime modified). If you look up "modern thai fonts" you can see pictures that showing the "latin" characters next to their traditional forms.

16:40 tip: a letter that pronounces "L" or "R" in Thai if it's an ending consonant will be pronounced as "N" example สตูล(Satun) and บึงกาฬ(Beung Kan) "ล" and "ฬ" is pronounced as an "L" but when it's an ending consonant It's "N"
