I'm not a furry (I think) but I like seeing you talk about stuff. I think there is, for sure, a sort of weightlessness to 2D art that is always lost when translated to 3D. Outside of trying to make cartoons photorealistic, our brains almost demand that everything in 3D lend itself to our understanding of physics and "how things work", otherwise it's seen as wrong. I think it's why weirdly hyperspecific things are seen what "realistic" or "unrealistic" in TV, movies, and 3D games.

Yeah, that makes sense! I think that's one reason why I've always preferred 2D art, it's a lot less concerned with making things realistic and is given a lot more flexibility to focus on what the artist wants to focus on. And in this case, it's making that big wolf feel like a friendly neighbor who would totally be down to snuggle you and keep you warm during the winter, one who is massive yet effortlessly gentle. Making that in 3D, or honestly, even rendering the image so it looks 3D with immense amounts of shading, etc., would lose that magic the image holds. Probably why I'm not a fan of very rendered/shaded 2D art as well. I've thought sometimes about macro art in this kind of light (specifically with myself), but it never really felt tangible until now. I've got some stuff to think about! ^w^ Also it's fun seeing your old self-image considering how I know you now. :3

Amazing how a bunch of furrys instantly think of Falco when macro is involved. But as you said, this piece doesn't give off that, almost uncomfortable feeling. It gives a very chill and relaxed feel, and the captions sums it all up too with its chill vibes.

I think the connection you've made with Clifford's trip to the currently-dominant CGI-realism is really thought-provoking, reminds me of the whole split in aesthetic choice between more "realistic" and "cartoon-y" ways artists will depict their animal characters. Though that conversation is often more about fur simulations and lighting rather than, like, character feel. Also, you now have the opportunity to make a metatextual video-cut-off joke by literally cutting it off entirely.

Especially recently I've taken a real big interest in comfy, wholesome and gentle macro art. It makes me happy! Whether it be a creature in an environment, not even interacting with it, or one interacting with the "normal sized" or "small" but without harm and without consequence. I want to be the big fluffy friend that comforts my smaller, possible also fluffy friends!!

Macro is such a descriptive theme of art that ultimately every quality of the normal is expanded to a greater degree in all ways whether sexual, friendly, violent, gentle, hyper, etc. and to me is always an underappreciated or overlooked genre. The sheer sense of scale each piece puts on isn't meant to be comprehended as something real but your brain can't help but imagine certain physical properties no matter how sensible and I love that. Micro is the same concept but instead of the focus on the character(s) being out of place and assertive in some way now the character is submissive and all sense of scale is relative.

As someone very into cozy macro furry art, this video is very excellently put!!! There's a warmth and coziness in the idea of being fuckoff massive, and your comparisons to Clifford very much had me thinking about the cartoonish aspect of giant animals and animal people, although I won't lie I do have an equal interest in the more fetishy side of macro art, so maybe our tastes are a bit different haha, I don't necessarily agree on your view that the realistic weight of macro art adds to this uncomfortable, scary feeling but! Art can mean different things depending on the person, obviously I have my biases lmao

I feel like a lot of macro art is in large part made to interpret tactilely. I think a lot of ppl would be intrigued by the idea of touching faraway buildings and geographical features at a matching scale, holding these objects with often very friendly, solid shapes as something very directly tangible rather than being a tiny speck in comparison to them.

Honestly a neat breakdown. I've always like characters who are radically different sizes but I think for me it's always been just the possibilities that stuff like the Borrowers opens up to transform a hand into a plane you can stand on, or an eye into the whole background. Mass without weight is a really great summary for avoiding the building stomping of parts of this trope.

This is why I do macro furry art and animation, even if I want *some* level of realism with how bigger characters play in the environment, My own big oc's kind of work in tandem like this. Ive drawn some big fellas chilling and even talking to their buddies who are on the second floor of their home while their gigantic buddy sits in their backyard Its intimate, yet feels natural. Yes they can... accidentally squash someone's car or bend the occasional street sign. But those details ultimately matter less about the fact about how gentle macros can be

honestly a lot of the appeal of macro art (and some creature art too), to me, lies within overthinking how these guys would interact with their environments. personally the environment/background is just as important to the pic; if there aren't people or objects reacting to the subject then it runs the risk of being like any other scene, or me having to ask, like, is the character even there?? of course, that can still be executed well with wholesome macro too and it doesn't even have to be a whole lot to be effective, environmental interaction just adds more flavor and gives me more to think about when i look at a pic also clifford isn't the first thing that comes to mind when i think of macro personally lmao, i've actually never thought of clifford that way. guess it felt like a completely different thing to me

All I imagine is the pain it would be trying to pay for the property damage. I like when art portrays a character being completely harmless to their environment whilst being detrimental in reality, like slugma in Pokémon. Sure it’s literally made of lava but people can still pet it and it doesn’t burn the environment around it. I don’t like seeing art where a character unknowingly or knowingly destroys environments that otherwise would be peaceful, like mountain ranges, or small towns because it makes it feel like the area is in chaos due to the actions of whatever character caused it instead of something peaceful.
