Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
In this week’s episode we cover:
1. I’ve been knitting a very long time and yet am still baffled by the yarn categories. Used to just be worsted and lace. Now there’s Aran, DK, bulky, super bulky, fingering. And what the heck is LIGHT fingering and SPORT? Is it a ply thing? Probably a wraps per inch thing, but I just don’t get it all. Also, what are the best combos for substituting - ie if i need DK, what yarns can I hold together to get it. Or for Aran. Love you to the moon and back and so glad you are getting the winter in Portland you’ve been wanting. I was just there last fall and it is truly a magical place.

2. Hi Andrea! This is a two ish parter- and I’m taking it back to sewing! I was wondering where you find your patterns and fabrics? Also, how do you finish your seams? Do you use a serger and if so what do you have? Thank you so much for these awesome videos. I’ve learned so much and as a new mom, you’ve inspired me! P.S. are you a tight or loose knitter?
3. Thank you for your Q&A session, I really enjoy unwinding my week while knitting and listening, which I’m doing all the way from Paris ! Here is my question : How do you determine the weight of a yarn if you have lost the tag ? Thank you for considering my question.

4. I don't have a LYS nearby where I live, and I struggle with understanding how a certain yarn will knit up and hold up over time. I work outside for my job and love to knit sweaters to keep me warm at work, but I'm pretty hard on them as a result. I want to make sure that they can stand up to that wear over time. I tend to gravitate towards "wooly wools" and have a couple brands that I love, but when I want to branch out and try something new I'm always nervous about choosing something that will wear out quick or be too delicate for my needs. What qualities should I look for when trying to find those hard-wearing yarns? Is it ply? Type of wool? Worsted or woolen spun? A mix of it all? Thanks for any tips!

5. I know I have to embrace and do more swatching, but I find I still have 2 gauges - one when starting a project (tight) and the other as I get past the fussy beginning and into the groove of the project (relaxed and looser). I'm a continental knitter. Is that normal? What are your tips/tricks for this? Thank you! I love watching you every week!
6. I’m starting a top down sweater and they ask for a swatch done in the round. I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on doing a swatch in the round. Does it really make that much of a difference, round or flat swatch?
