This is what is wrong with Nigerians all the time. It's a Nigerian boxing coach most likely Obisia Nwankpa because that was around 2008 Olympics qualifier that rejected him. Govt can not and should not blamed for everything. Govt employees are people like you and me but they carry the jealousy and bad mind into govt offuce to mistreat fellow citizens. Oh shut up..... Mr Fingerpointer. Do you think every aspiring boxer in Britain 'makes it''? 99% of them don't, so kindly STFU. Government blamer. What stops you from setting up a boxing gym in Nigeria, or you expect the govt to do that too? Everything, government this government that. Ridiculous. Joshua's success had ZERO to do with the British govt. In Britain, private companies and individuals set up boxing gyms and make money off them. You do the same in Nigeria and boxing will bloom. Many in Nigeria can do it. Rather than building a mansion, or a hotel, of which there are thousands there already, why not a boxing gym? It's got nothing to do with the govt, or with pointing fingers at anyone else if YOU won't do it.

Let us focus on his success of boxing victory and the success of overlooking Nigeria's bad sides. It's in our blood. Many of us here would always want to identify with Nigeria if we truly hit anything worthwhile big. We love our home even though, we have things that make us angry. Moreover, this is what his family want, it's a thing of pride for them. The Yorubas like to go home and relate with home when they make it away from home. " Gbogbo wa la máa Kérè oko délé o"

We can be cynical, we can talk about politics and self interest but I think this is positive. I'm not from a Nigerian background and there will be bigger questions a out wider socio economic conditions in Nigeria. But on balance its positive we have a world level athlete who is making an effort to speak about encouraging young people, use his influence and we have a global star talking openly about having looked into his cultural roots. I don't see anything wrong with this. AJ strikes me as an ambitious fella, but he also wants to be global. He could sit in London in fancy bars with loads of women and cars (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that) and no doubt he's having a good time. But I think it's good following up on the cultural side as well

@oghensatumah7867

Peter Omoruyi I agree with what you are saying. Nigeria, doesn’t matter where you go, everyone is feeling it equally but differently. AJ is from Watford, Hertfordshire, UK. every where you go in the Uk there are strategies put in place by the UK government to help youth stay out of trouble (AJ got into trouble a lot but having places like that saved his life through boxing - he could have ended up joining a gang, in prison or dead from gun or knife : there are gangs in the so young people die every day from knife and gun in the UK - not just in south of the uk where AJ come from but everywhere. Although celebrities can help in influencing people it is up to our government to start investing in its people everywhere in Nigeria not just one place. You said extremism in the north which is a huge problem. The same way anywhere else in the south there are ritual killings, robbery, abuse, rape of women and children - because our politicians like their pocket. No need to divide our selves we are going through the same struggle - come together and let those power hungry greedy bastards in Abuja understand that!!!!
