As a creative, that is an absolute NIGHTMARE scenario. I have stuff backed up 3x online, and on physical media. At all times? No, but damage would be minimized. I once lost all data on my only backup drive (just went blank with no files for some reason) and some software was able to get most of it back. That set me all kinds of straight after that. Backup of a backup, forever.

Those who throw rocks shouldn't live in glass houses. As a friendly reminder: *DON'T* rely on backing up your data on the cloud! INVEST in some external SSD's that won't crash or corrupt your data as easily as an internal laptops hard drive/ssd. Having multiples of any given copies of storage is a godsend to a writer like yourself. And if you do lots of traveling in airports and outdoors, seek storage drives with really good thermal intake and x-ray proofing; so any data won't be corrupt from outside elements of magnesium levels. SD cards should not be treated as just your only substitute either.

I recently lost all my art and half my writing in a hard drive corruption. Like, I'd even scanned (and then threw out the hard copies of) old art from when I was 12 to that hard drive thinking everything would be fine because I could eventually move that to the next computer? Yeah, no dice, didn't catch it in time. I legit mourned. What made it worse was that it wasn't even a fire or a natural disaster or anything, it was just me not having backed it up anywhere safe, so it felt like I killed my art with my own two hands. God I'm SO fucking glad you got your shit back, man. I don't even want my worst enemy to be in that kinda position. (Not that you're an enemy! I'm just saying, lol.)

I bet there's a script in here somewhere. A somewhat famous guy who's previously been publicy shamed and is widely bashed on the internet, but he's working on himself and is doing his best, loses his laptop in a public place, and the Internet learns that it's out in the wild. He and his friends are trying to find it, but so are the internet haters because they assume there's something incriminating on there they can use to finally cancel the guy into oblivion once and for all. There isn't anything necessarily bad, but still sensitive and private and stuff the guy doesn't want made public. Wackiness ensues, the laptop is repeatedly found and lost again, stolen, recovered, damaged, repaired, ranging all over the city all in the middle of the night. All sorts of crazy encounters with colorful weirdos, you know the kind of comedy i'm talking about. And of course, all the hijinks are being live-tweeted and streamed, and whole chase is trending online. The bad guys eventually manage to charge and access the computer, only to find nothing incriminating on the protagonist, but something potentially damaging to someone else that he was trying to protect. Realizing that he's not such a bad guy after all, and the information on the laptop is nobody else's business, the antagonists return it. The rest of the Internet still hates our guy though.

Just losing some writing that no one else was ever going to see in a hard drive crash years ago bummed me out. I can't even imagine what thinking I'd lost that much of it would do. Ever since then though, all my writing gets saved on cloud drives.

I have been there though nowhere to that extent. A few years ago I was working in a clinical production environment with inconsistent downtime and no phones/electronics allowed. I kept a tiny notepad in my pocket that I only used as notes for a novel and a dnd module. After a few months of this, I had this notepad absolutely filled with, front and back and writing in the margins. I somehow lost it, I may have left it at work and it was tossed in the trash. I was absolutely crushed and ended up abandoning both of those projects and moving onto other projects because I tried to recreate some of the ideas I remembered from the notepad but I could remember everything correctly or how it all fit together. I couldn’t face those projects because I felt like I had solved so many problems and I can’t stand rework. That was crushing for weeks.
