The thing about the art of the businessman giving leaves is it implies that what he’s giving to the beggar is only a thing that’s already been stolen from the beggar. Giving detached leaves to a bare tree is futile, the damage has been done, and no amount of scraps the haves can toss the have-nots will ever be able to make up for the desecration and thievery committed that provided the businessman his wealth to begin with: the capital stolen from the now homeless tree. 10/10

I’d also like to add on the second image, of the boy and the wall of tvs, it’s not just that tvs are bad. It can also be a commentary on the overconsumption of news, that we base our perception of the world on the disasters and atrocities that keep getting broadcasted, eventually internalizing the idea that it’s all rotten and isolating ourselves. But in practice, this is the very mindset that will end our communities and doom us. You cannot understand the world while viewing it from the sidelines, you have to actually experience it. The bad parts exist, but so do good ones- the dove symbolizes that hope.

1:00 Hmm, I don't think Little Joel understood the TV window art. The TVs symbolize protection. Without his TV to protect him, the man is being dragged out the window by a bird. Presumably he will either fall and die or get taken all the way to the bird nest and get eaten. The message of the art is, "put something heavy like a TV in your window so you can be safe from birds." I would say that's a 7/10 image. It's true but it's something all of us already know.

Weirdly I immediately had the same thought when I looked at the image; that it was a literal crack. But what does it tell us about prejudice? Both players are directing the human in opposite directions and it is tearing them apart into two separate identities. This means the human as a whole will act differently in different places, behaving violently or cruelly to everyone along the path the demon-controlled identity walks and with kindness and pacifism along the other. This identity denotes prejudice and not just evil because the path is not something that the human created but instead is society's infrastructural response to the random landscape. This shows prejudice is a separate manifestation of an evil that was there all along that is brought about by society. While societal change to divert those wanting to do evil is an interesting solution, it is not within the two gamers’ ability to do which is to control (part of) an individual. Instead, what is highlighted is the angel’s choice to go with the demon and to chose proactive social reform through affirmative action only possible by remaining in control of the whole human rather than choosing separation from and denouncement of evil. A politically conservative angel may say that the evil identity will be defeated along the route the demon chose but the choice wasn’t entirely random as I might have suggested - the demon could deliberately have chosen the easiest target as the angel would always go in the opposite direction and is dependent on the demon’s decision. This angel would incorrectly assume that the roads were designed for this dilemma and are resistant to targeted attacks such as these but it is in fact ridiculous to assume that roads are built in the knowledge that one day somebody’s butt would crack them in half and betray the world.

the umbrella one is interesting because it speaks to the tendency for privileged people to “help” the less fortunate through their own means in order to hold onto their own element of power, rather than giving those who are suffering the means to succeed on their own. as well as the idea that people will often do charitable acts to boost their own sense of morality rather than doing anything that will objectively, concretely help someone.

I may be giving it too much credit, but the business man with the umbrella might be symbolizing the “textile problem”, where westerners think they are being helpful by donating clothing to African countries, but what it’s actually done is stopped emerging economies because they don’t develop industries to produce their own textiles. (Before people start trying to debate me on this, this is just something I’ve heard about, not something I’m well informed or have an opinion on)
@SilverDragonJay
Ай бұрын
That is certainly an interesting proposal. I feel like a bigger problem these developing countries have, however, isn't a lack of _need_ to develop their own industry, but a lack of ability. People have been making clothes for as long as we've been people. These countries _used_ to produce their own textiles, why did they stop? I'm no scholar, but I'm guessing its colonialism. Richer countries came in and started despoiling these countries of their wealth, packaging up and selling the fibers and the products of their artisans that used to clothe them and sending it out of the country. They don't make their own clothes because they are too busy working to clothe us (or feed us, whichever) to clothe themselves. idk, that's just my view on it. And no, I'm not trying to debate you on it, just providing my 2 cents.
@tsk5
Ай бұрын
@@SilverDragonJay Definitely something I don’t know enough about. I’ve largely seen it brought up as an example of how sometimes we think we are helping when we are actually making things worse, but I also don’t know anything about the economy of African countries to know if any of that is right or just an excuse to not be charitable. Regardless, I think there is something to be said about the types of aid we provide and how the easier acts of charity aren’t really enough to solve the underlying problems, and that the help we ought to be giving is often difficult to do and requires more work than we are willing to give. I just don’t know if I personally buy into the idea that sending clothes and food and what not is actually bad, which is what I think that image is promoting. But again, I’m not really educated enough to have a firm opinion on the topic. It’s just something I’m vaguely aware of enough to conclude that’s what the image is referencing.
@seigeengine
Ай бұрын
@@SilverDragonJay It's absolutely not a lack of ability. Many African countries had a more developed industrial sector in the recent past, but saw it decline as trade policies opened up and they got flooded with things like second hand clothing. They stopped because local production couldn't compete with Western countries gathering donated second-hand clothes that they couldn't sell locally and ship it off in bulk to Africa at pennies on the dollar. While globalization is broadly good, that relies on you being able to do something else with the freed inefficient labour.

I think the umbrella one might be about philanthropy? Like the man appears to be shielding the black, shoeless child (presumably from a third world country) from getting wet, but is preventing him from collecting water. Despite the man having a big bucket and the kid only needing a little bit, the man is focusing on a surface level problem and not actually providing the kid what he needs, that being investment in education, infrastructure, healthcare jobs etc. the umbrella deprives the boy of these things but the man acts like he’s doing the boy a favor. Like how charities to give African children clothes and shoes actually fucks up their economy since the entire textile industry is rendered meaningless.
