On my university there is a professor who gave a lecture to a bunch of middle and high school students talking about how the earth is round. The idea was that the students would give arguments that the earth is round and he'd refute them. The point was to show that it is not so simple to prove even an obvious truth. At the and of the lecture he said that obviously the earth is round and gave some more arguments in favour of the round earth. A few years later a video of this lecture surfaced, but the ending was cut, so it made him look like a flat earther.

Earth is a 2-dimensional manifold, meaning it is locally homeomorphic to a flat 2d plane at all points. If it is locally homeomorphic to a flat plane at all points, then it is globally homeomorphic to a flat plane, so it cannot be a sphere. This has been Dr. Moore on the flat earth. Thank you.
@ChristAliveForevermore
3 жыл бұрын
That doesn't account for imperceptibly slight perturbations in the perceived curvature which becomes more exacerbated over larger reference scales, given the immensity of the Earth. Pure mathematics doesn't necessarily apply to reality 1:1 and, in fact, physics has to constantly account for Nature's imperfections, such as friction, drag, or electric resistance. Why should the geometry of our reality, regardless of scale, fit to our evolutionarily-directed primitive mathematical conceptions?
@OtiumAbscondita

@@nHans I’ve been a working mechanical engineer for about 50 years now. You are confusing “having something to say” with “being agitated”. There are several personality traits that emerge in career engineers. One is a very, very thick hide. Trust me, there is NOTHING that could possibly be written in the comments here that could generate the SLIGHTEST wiggle in my GIVE-A-SHIT-O-METER. I read your comment as “it isn’t important whether the earth is flat or spherical, because it doesn’t impact your world in any meaningful way.” If that’s an improper interpretation, I apologize. Over my career, I’ve helped “mature” about 3 generations of wet-behind-the-ears baby engineers, right out of college and knowing just enough to be dangerous to themselves & others, into pretty well-functioning real engineers. One of the first lessons is to distinguish fact from opinions. Real engineers don’t say, _”the 2+2 might be 4”_ or _”the world might be spherical.”_ They say _”2+2 IS 4”_ and _”The world IS spherical”_ and “any other answer is stupid & (worse) wrong.” I was reading your comment as _”The world might be spherical”_ and further that “the question doesn’t matter because it doesn’t impact my (ie., your) life.” If I misread your meaning, I apologize & feel free to clarify your intent. Stupidity is rampant in this world, and, especially in this topic. Further, if the stupid person is receptive & polite, the proper response to stupidity is an occasional explanation. Whereas, if the stupid person lacks either receptivity or politeness, then the proper response is “pointing fingers & ridicule”. But intelligent / competent people can’t let stupidity stand un-ridiculed. You choose how much effort you’re willing to spend, but your civic duty requires at least a small contribution.

Do you know that the gravitational acceleration g = 9.81 m/s² is only the average? At the poles the value is 9.863 m/s² and at the equator 9.798 m/s². If we take into account the centrifugal force (0.034 m/s²), this results in 9.764 m/s² at the equator. This may seem like a small difference, but it adds up. This means that after one minute, the polar region would be 178.2 m ahead of the equator. After one hour it would be 641.520 km and after one day it would be 369,515.520 km. The earth would simply be torn apart by the differential acceleration. This means that the earth cannot be flat and uniformly accelerated. A real and good physicist should know.

Dr. Ed Iotte I am very impressed by your attitude of "I reject your reality and substitute my own". After all, if all the equations in physics are so difficult to work with that even I can't understand them, how can they even be right? To prove the theories are right they should be able to explain their equations in ways everyone can understand them and not use approximations all the time. After all, if something uses approximations, it can't be a exact science. And if not everyone can understand their theories, how can they possibly be right?
