I think a problem may be that the average people who engage with your content don't actually engage in much critical content besides you. They expect you to basically function as an advertisement rather than a critic, because people like certain things as a product rather than a piece of art worth critically analyzing. I definitely don't always agree with you but you are certainly a consistent and fair critic. I just feel like a lot of people don't want a fair critic, they want confirmation bias.

I think the reason why you're arguably the most prominent music reviewer on the site is because even when we disagree on the quality of an album, you bring up very valid points to support your feelings on whichever album is getting reviewed. I think that's what leads to people disliking your reviews. It's easy to dismiss criticism when it's so outlandish that it doesn't even make sense to engage with it, but when there's a hint of truth to it? That definitely hits a lot harder.

I watched Fantano a bunch from 2013-16 and have only recently started coming back to the channel to see what he's up to lately. What impressed me is that he's still plugging away and basically sticking to the same format he had a decade ago. Obviously he's expanded the content offering with things like Let's Argue, livestreams et al, but the consistency in style and tone of his reviews is unwavering and that's proof to me that the only agenda he has is celebrating the artform and thinking about and sharing his love of music. I'm glad to see the channel continue to gain traction and I hope whatever annoyances come with increased exposure don't inhibit another ten years of great reviews. He's a real one.

You don't need to protect your reasoning. It's your musical taste, and you do the best to express your love or frustration towards certain music. There are some objective reasonings in music, but it's very subjective what you enjoy, what emotions it creates, how you use your imagination & what songs personally mean to you. Everyone should embrace their own personal opinion on what they love about music, considering other opinion as an option or advice, but never as a face value.

And while I love some stuff you have given negative reviews to, I have liked most of the things you loved and it really helped to ease me into new genres like metal. Your reviews are unbiased and reach tons of different genres and artists most of which I didn’t even know existed. And Even though I’m not finished with the list I like to put it on shuffle and just hear something new. Basically I shuffle and if I see a song I like I listen to the whole album so I’m not missing out on the album experience. Some stuff I don’t like but most of it is interesting and is broadening my musical horizons. Basically dude you have great taste and your opinion matters. You're one of the few people who actually review things critically rather than just giving praise and positive comments. I feel like most outlets are giving 8s and 9s on average and are scared to hint at negativity or even a more average score

Nothing but love and respect, but you run 2 channels that require a lot of research and a twitch stream, and you post near daily on those channels. Jesus christ dude, like I get that the answer is probably like passion or something like that, but how have you not burnt out yet? Like deadass there are channels that have teams of people that post once a week, and they burn out. And you've been doing this shit for years. Like the amount of production and quality production at that feels inhuman. Like damn dude if you ever need a week or something we'll still be here. Or at least I will, and I think a lot of people feel the same.

Also the thing that I think throws people off about your reviews is that people forget that it is literally your job to research music extensively. Like for something like Joyner Lucas' ADHD and Logic's Supermarket I don't think that they are the most sonically offensive, but you have likely heard every single song and album that those projects rather blatently rip off. And people without that context are like, "Well you're just a Logic hater", but like no they're just legitimately not adding anything to the sound they've hijacked. But they don't know that though.

Hey Anthony, genuine question here. What would you suggest for a pretty young person who has only recently(past 10-12 months) gotten into listening to music seriously beyond the generic pop and hip hop mainstream hits, to learn to appreciate music better, in terms of identifying melodies, chord progressions, instruments, hooks etc, and also how do you manage to keep up with and remember the works of seemingly hundreds of artists and bands, even drawing comparisons between stuff written 20-30 years ago and current albums in your reviews?

I think your reviews are reasonable and definitely to the point. I can find it oftentimes entertaining to watch you and Brad Taste In Music review songs/albums because it's kinda become an interest, to me, to hear what people have to say about songs (whether obscure or overrated or average) that I may enjoy myself.

Of course he’s reasonable and well thought but at the end of the day they’re opinions, too many people take his word as truth. If you like an album and he doesn’t, fuck it dude enjoy that album, he’s just a dude, the entertainment doesn’t come from him being right it comes from him being well-spoken and from giving ppl a space to talk about music.

I only started watching you recently, and don’t really know that much about music. You’ll often state you dislike artists that I enjoy, and i don’t really find it frustrating. Feels like it just opens my eyes/ears to the fact that music has a lot more depth and intricacies that I would know of as a casual listener. Thank you for your work.

Anthony, the frequency with which I disagree with your opinions is MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOU. I'm sorry people blow that out of proportion or attack you for it, because I see it as a wonderful thing that helps me think more critically about the music I listen to. I don't leave comments that often, and I'd wager I'm like the majority of people who watch your stuff. And these people attacking you are a very loud minority. Also to echo what tons of other people have said, you've got me into so many different artists and even whole genres that I now adore, it's hard to even put into words how grateful I am for you and your presence online. Keep it up bro, and take a break if you think you need it! You're the best

I like you as a music critic because you are really good at backing up your arguments for bad songs, as well as explaining why a good song works for you. You also remind me of some of the people I see working at Amoeba music in SF whom I may not share the same exact music taste with but we could talk about music for hours and hours and hours together.

While sometimes I don’t completely agree with every single review you’ve done. People fail to realize that it is your opinion and shouldn’t affect anyones view on that review. What I believe makes you a great music reviewer is how spread out your reviews are. If you have every decent to good album as a high review and every trash album a low score. It would become stale, not even and seem fake in a sense of your rating. The spread out scores allow for a more honest rating of that album. I’ve also noticed people will rate an entire album based on a couple of great songs even tho it has mostly mid songs. So to rate the entirety of the album equally and even the cohesiveness of every song to the next is a level of thought I like in the reviews. I think people are more judgmental and hateful of your reviews because your reasoning to why it’s that score has some truthfulness to it and more likely for them to get frustrated that you are somewhat right.

I think you've done your best to hang in there in this crazy time and be reasonable and balanced and bring clearer thinking about music and all of the wonderful craziness that comes along with it. And you've had to go face to face with some of the darkest nastiest negative energy of the internet, it's not easy, but your still here still growing I see you becoming more and more positive and more vulnerable and open, in spite of all of it. I think it's possible music is more healing than we previously imagined, and we are at the beginning of a special new era of music, and I look forward to watching it all unfold with all of you. P.s. I recently came across Max Cooper's music and feel compared to share it around with anyone that might listen. Start with the video Everything and go from there.

A critic’s value lies in the consistency of their voice and Anthony is consistent. For example, I’ve been watching him for a long time and I’ve noticed that he values innovation in a project very highly. If a project steps outside previously explored territory in an interesting way, that scores major points for him. He’s always been that way and is very consistent with that criterion. I’ve noticed that he also values lyrical content and the overarching message of an album highly. If a project has a well thought out, properly realized message that it explores meaningfully throughout the project, that will also score highly for him, extra points if it sonically lends itself to the theme of its lyrics. So with that being said, an album that is innovative, has a well realized theme that is consistent across the album, both sonically and lyrically, that will score VERY highly for him. A great example of an album like what I’ve described is “To pimp a butterfly” and we saw his review on that. Now, those criteria that I laid out that are very important to Anthony, they aren’t as important for me. I’m more of a sonic junky. I have no problem with an album that isn’t innovative. To use the “stepping outside the box” analogy again, I don’t care if an album steps outside of the box as long as the album fully explores the box, so to speak. Having an album that charts new territory in an enjoyable way is nice, but I don’t need that to think an album is truly great as long as the album explores previous sounds in a very enjoyable way. Also, I don’t need an album to have good lyrics, I’m not that into lyrics. There’s definitely music that I think has very interesting or meaningful lyrics, a good example of that would be hollowed be my name by Iron Maiden, but I don’t need that to love the album. Also, to be completely frank, an album’s overarching theme doesn’t mean much to me. I don’t really consume music like that, I go far more on a track by track basis. Again, this isn’t the case with all albums, SOAD’s “Toxicity” is an example of an album that has such an amazing and fully realized overarching theme that it adds a lot to the music for me, but not nearly as much as it does for Anthony. The things that are the most important for me are having an interesting and engaging rhythmic quality, energizing melodies, and expressive use of harmony. I really like the use of dissonant chords and just generally using chords, melodies, and rhythms that are raw, emotionally impactful, and unique. Overall, I am more attracted to the sonic qualities of music. To put it as simply as possible, Anthony values the artistic expression of a project very highly. I value the raw sonic appeal of a project very highly. Obviously it follows that because of this, we will have different views on a lot of projects, which is fine. We value different things in music but the important thing about Anthony as a reviewer is the consistency of his voice. Because he’s been so consistent, if I see a project that he reviews very highly, I will already have an idea of why he likes it because I know what he values highly in music, and that’s because he’s consistent. Understanding what the reviewer values in music and knowing what you personally value in music is necessary for getting the most out of a reviewers content, and if you can’t get a clear picture of what is important to the reviewer because they’re inconsistent in their criticism, then they lose their value as a critic.

I think the problem boils down to assuming bad faith. Some people automatically assume that someone speaking harshly about a piece of art, or cracking jokes at its or the artist's expense, is being disingenuous and trolling for attention. For sure, there are assholes like that out there. But most people aren't like that. It has always confused me when people have said you're a troll, a shill, a bad actor, or especially a bigot. I came to your channel after years of exposure to caustic critics like Nostalgia Critic and AVGN, so I found your relatively measured, calm criticism refreshing. I don't always agree with your assessments (I think Die Lit is the worst album I've ever heard), but I never come away from your reviews feeling like you're only doing them for cheap outrage bait.
