Missed u Jen Murray, been too busy to go scrolling for content. But this reaction gave me pause; as I regard the double feature of Ilia Salkind produced Superman I & II are by far the best epic superhero movies ever put on the silver screen. Broadway stage play style flight effects and PG level violence for not overly super fighting is a lot less hard on the eyes & and more fun/entertaining in its simplicity of actors just acting out scenes instead heavily overlaid CGI like in the newer DC hero flicks. This is the film that set the standard for all comic book hero adaptations in blockbuster releases AND the actor Christopher Reeve is at the heart of why I love him as my Superman forever. He is so captivating in his portrayal for most people who see the movie to love it for how perfect a hero that Reeve played this role. Masterfully done. Even little kids love these movies after pointing out the 70s era cinematography. You will certainly appreciate this great work of untraditional live action cinema ALMOST ALL directed on a Broadway sound stage.

What I love about Reeve, is that he changes character between Clark and Superman. His stance, gait, speech, mannerisms, everything. Evident in the glasses scene on his date with Lois after he'd flow her around as Superman. Reeve was also responsible for Superman's first flight at the end of the Fortress Of Solitude scene. The director and stunt crew simply couldn't figure out how to make it look good enough, and Reeve apparently said to hoist him up and swing him across the set as they'd already practiced. Reeve then banked his body to the left, and used his arms and legs as counterweights to make him swing outwards in a curve and past the camera. Hey presto, the Superman flyby shot was born and the way Superman flies was cemented into canon.

For the longest time most people thought that it was stupid that all Clark did to differentiate himself from Superman was wear a pair of glasses. This movie, and Christopher Reeve's performance in it, demonstrated how it would absolutely work. He not only wears a pair of glasses, as Clark he slouches, pitches his voice higher, speaks nasally, combs his hair differently, and wears a baggy suit to hide his muscles. After this movie, nobody made jokes about Clark not really wearing a disguise. Think about it, in the scene in Lois's apartment, Clark suddenly straightens up and takes off the glasses, and its no longer Clark standing there. Its Superman in a Clark Kent suit.

Traditionally, according to the comic books, Superman would change into his Superman suit in an enclosed telephone booth. By 1978, when the film came out, however, telephones were on small wall-less kiosks on poles. That's why, when he is first changing into Superman in the helicopter scene where he has to rescue Lois Lane, Clark does a double take when he looks at the phone. The scene was just a humorous homage to the Superman comics and films from the 1940's.

Fun fact: The story, at least as I hear it, is that when they cast Superman, Christopher Reeve was a struggling theater actor around age 24. His agent had to fight hard for him to be considered-and when he was told that director Richard Donner was reluctantly going to interview him, he was unbelievably nervous. He hit the gym obsessively for weeks before the interview, because he was a skinny kid who didn't feel he had Superman's physique. He put on something like 30 pounds of muscle before meeting with Richard Donner at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel. Apparently, when we walked in as a 6-foot-4 wall of muscle, Donner was immediately unimpressed, as he'd been interviewing one macho bodybuilder after another for the part and was sick to death of them. But within seconds, reaching to shake his hand, Reeve was still not used to how much bigger his body had become, and he promptly spilled Donner's drink all over him. He had a minor freakout, and tried to clean it up: "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, Mr. Donner, I'm so sorry..." and was rattled for the rest of the interview. After the interview, which he thought went terribly, Donner apparently said, "I've seen a dozen good Supermans for the part. But that guy is my Clark Kent." Donner immediately set up Reeve's formal screen test, and pushed the producers for him, based on how he watched Reeve flip from a confident, imposing, impressive man entering the room to a meek, nervous kid in the space of about 5 seconds.

It's probably the best live action Superman movie made. When young Clark's Earth father died, he realizes that despite all the things that he can do, he can't fight death and can't always save everyone. That is echoed again when Lois dies. But in the end he pulls out some weird power and actually does manage to save everyone. In most Superman stories, there's really no villain that can pose a physical threat to Superman (unless they're magical or Kryptonian themselves or they have a chunk of Kryptonite). So ultimately the best Superman stories are those that challenge his moral convictions in some way. Several times in this story Clark's Kryptonian father admonished him to not interfere with human history, but for the sake of love he breaks the rules that he was taught. It's a subtle character growth showing that even though he's the product of two worlds he has become his own person who loves the people of this world... and one person in a particularly special way.

Here's the thing about Kryptonite. Not only can it weaken Superman, but it has the potential to kill him too. Definitely, check out Superman II. Check out the theatrical version of the movie first. Experience the movie how audiences experienced it 40 years ago. Then you can watch the Donner Cut, eventually. It's almost like a totally different movie. Superman III is okay but definitely, not in the same league as the first two but still worth a watch. And Superman IV is considered by many one of the worst movies ever made. That being said, Christopher Reeve is good in all the Superman movies.

I think I like Superman more now than I did when I was an 8 year old. I miss Chistopher Reeve. At my current age, I notice different things. How sweet he was, charming, handsome. What a good actor he was. Like a contemporary Cary Grant. When I was 8 I don't know that I thought much of anything!!! :) :). Now all Supermen have to be neurotic and edgy. Reeve played it the right way. He is my favorite now of all the Superhero actors by a lot!!!! He really WAS superman. I'm obsessed with Christopher Reeve. I'd like to watch both 1 and 2 again and some of his post superman movies as well. He was a fine actor. One of only 2 in his Juilliard class to be put into a separate program, along with Robin Williams.

There are several different cuts of this movie. The two you can easily get are the "special edition," with cleaned up visual effects and a few extra scenes. There is also the television version that's over three hours long. When ABC wanted to air the movie they wanted to do it over two nights and asked for extra scenes and they got them. There was a double feature Blu-ray released a couple of years ago with both of them in the same pack. There are 4 Superman movies with Christopher Reeve, but only the first two are worth watching. There is plenty of kissing in the second movie (and one is a major plot point). Watch the original theatrical version before checking out the Richard Donner cut. They tried to complete 2 movies at the same time, but the producers were irritated with Richard Donner (the director of the first movie) and fired him. He was replaced with Richard Lester, who completed Superman 2. In order for him to get screen credit as director, much of the footage already completed by Donner had to be cut out. A few years ago Warner Brothers let Donner complete the movie the way he wanted it, but some of the scenes needed were never filmed and they used screentest footage to fill in the gaps. This makes some of the scenes look cheap and doesn't match the rest of the movie. There is a fifth movie in the franchise, Supergirl, but Chris Reeve doesn't appear in it. There's a poster of him on the wall of Lucy (Lois' sister) Lane's wall and Marc McClure appears as Jimmy Olsen. It came out between Superman 3 & 4, and wasn't very good.

Director Richard Donner said to his writer Tom Mankiewicz that if they could make the love story work, everything else would fall in place. Mankiewicz said within the first minute of Revee’s screen test, it was so obvious he was meant to play Superman. Some big name stars auditioned for Lois Lane including Leslie Ann Warren and Stalker Channing. But Margot Kidder just had that natural ability to tap into her schoolgirl crush with Revee,. Even though off camera they constantly threw friendly banter at each other like they were brother and sister. So glad you liked this movie. This has always been one of my childhood favorites. It has been said that head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige makes his directors watch Superman as a basis on how to make a Marvel movie.

What this film does, that taught all other super hero films to come after, was to ground the film with little moments of banter and humorous dialogue giving the characters far more depth and provide relief from the otherwise grim and purely action driven plot. It also showed that a comic book could be adapted to a dramatic film much easier than people had imagined. If you treat the subject seriously the audience will too. The TV show Batman with Adam West was truly the only frame of reference Hollywood producers had for a live action portrayal of a super hero and had no idea if audiences would accept a dramatic interpretation of a guy in tights and a cape.

I used to be so impressed with the actor who plays young Clark Kent. His voice sounded exactly like Christopher Reeve. As a fellow Canadian, I hope you enjoyed seeing rural Alberta stand in for Smallville Kansas, and Calgary for some of the Metropolis scenes. This continues through Superman II and III. Also, although it is often omitted by American biographers, Superman co-creator Joe Shuster was born in Toronto and wouldn't immigrate to the United States with his family until he was the age of 10. So Superman himself, has some good Canadian lineage as well. No wonder he is so polite and ernest. Furthermore, the series Smallville and current Superman & Lois shows were also shot in Canada. As for Margot Kidder? Lois Lane herself? Also Canadian.

One thing that I noticed a long time ago is that the creators of Superman must of liked the letter "L" a lot. There are 2 cuts of superman 2 both follow the same story but have different directors, the theatrical had tons of reshoots and slapstick added, the donner cut used donners footage and like 15 % of lester(the director of superman 2 and 3) this franchise has 2 time lines the original which is 1-4 and the alternative which is superman, the donner cut and superman returns. The latter is more serious and true to the first film. When i met Margot Kidder(lois) before she passed she preferred the latter.

Superman: The Movie is the single greatest superhero film of all time. Both Kevin Feige who runs the entire MCU and Bryan Singer who directed X-Men & Superman Returns worked for Richard Donner who directed Superman, and credit this movie with being the standard that they have chased for their whole careers. Feige even stated publicly that they watch it before making every Marvel movie. Christopher Nolan also said that he patterned the structure and pacing of Batman Begins after Superman: The Movie. Comic book movies would not have grown into the blockbusters they are today if this movie did not exist. It paved the way for everything after it. Christopher Reeve is an absolute legend in this role and nobody will ever be able to compare to his dual portrayals of both Clark Kent and Superman. David Prowse who was the man in the Darth Vader suit in all 3 original Star Wars movies was an ex bodybuilder and personally trained Reeve for the role of Superman, helping him add nearly 30 pounds of muscle onto his 6'4" frame! Reeve was also a trained glider pilot and performed his own flying often suspended on cables from a crane as high as 50 feet in the air. This movie and everyone involved in it was the real deal. Thank you for reacting to this movie. It is one of my favorite films ever made. Hope to see you stick with the series.

Bullshit. Man Of Steel poses the question: can Superman, let alone superheroism, exist in a post-September 11 world? Not the Chris Reeve version because you have 24-hour news, social media, the Internet and talking heads who question the existence of a person who can do what Superman does. Superman 78 came out at a time when the news media wasn't as big as today and people were tired of Vietnam, Watergate, civil unrest, racism, environmental pollution, raising gas prices and wanted to escape from those social problems. There's nothing wrong with escapism, but you have to balance it out with practicalism.

It was nice to see someone who doesn't know Superman lore watching this because it does a great job conveying all of the important information. Some of us consider this to be THE Superman film to be the best, especially if you watch it with the Richard Donner Director's Cut version of Superman II. I saw this as a sneak preview and again when it opened in the theaters. The version you watched has an abbreviated version of Superman entering Luthor's lair. The full sequence has Lex try to kill Superman as he walks down the entrance tunnel with machine guns, flame throwers and by freezing him. It is between two of the death traps, I forget if it was 1&2 or 2&3, that Otis says "I think he's coming Mr. Luthor" and only after the freezing, when they think for a moment that they succeeded, that Superman arrives at the door.
