can we talk about how refreshingly honest this video is? as someone who is also a course creator and mentor for freelancers, i understand firsthand the pressure of feeling like you have to know everything and have your life completely together in order to give other people "advice." But the truth is, we're all just trying to figure it out and do the best we can. And we ALL doubt ourselves at times! Sending prayers your way🙏🏻

Gosh, I can super relate to this video. I'm a freelance writer as well, and things have been pretty bad lately. Last month, my biggest client just told me that they are ending the contract in a few weeks, and that really scared me to the point I got depressed. I was also travelling in the past years living the digital nomad life and didn't save much. Right now, I'm back home staying in my mom's house until I figure out a way to save money and get my own place. I still have a few projects from Upwork, but most are short-term projects. I'm trying to stay positive and doing whatever I can to not go back to the "corporate world". I love freelance writing and have been doing this for over ten years. But with AI and other things now, I'm afraid I may not be able to sustain it.

Life is hard. Change does not equal failure! I discovered your channel when I was all "I'm gonna quit my job, be a writer, be a freelancer!" And I did that. And I failed that. 😅 And I got another 9-5. And I started another business. And I quit that 9-5. Now, I'm faking it til I make it with my business. Faking it doesn't pay my mortgage. I'm scared. Thank you for validating the dark side. I've learned so much from you and others that I apply every day, despite no longer aspiring to be a copywriter. Your music, your comedy, your writing, your experience, your personality - all of that is priceless. Your light is valuable. Don't let the pressure put it out.

It also doesn't help that "Influencers" and other on YT have been focusing just on quitting the "9-5". The reality is that this may not work for everybody. Most business do in fact fail. It really is tough to make things happen. Nothing wrong working with full time while building something sustainable on the side. But there really are no guarantees. Always good to have multiple streams of income to fall back on.

You have no idea how much I truly appreciate your honesty. I’m in a very similar boat - nearly all my freelance writing clients put their services on hold or decided to part ways earlier in the year. I’ve also blamed myself but the more people speaking out the more clear it is that it is an industry-wide crisis. It’s also so hard to prioritize personal creative endeavours when you’re stressed about the writing business. I wish I had advice but just know that you are not alone, and not failing by your own doing. Thank you for sharing what’s really going on and being honest because it has made me feel less alone. You can only do what you can do at this point to get by and there’s no shame in that. Hopefully one day we will look back on this as stronger people in a more abundant time if we just ride the wave. ❤

LOL These are lessons and there's nuggets in those lessons for your next chapter. And you're on the agile adaptive part right now. Be resourceful. NOTHING wrong with a part time job to keep the lights on. Who knows, maybe you can write a book on resourcefulness in tough times. Ask others for guidance and ideas. No shame in that. And stay on the spiritual path to sustain your mental health. Want to chat or brainstorm? I'm here for you! No cost, of course.💙

Hi Colleen, This is a super long comment (maybe chatgpt can summarize it lol) and I don’t EVER do this, but I felt strongly moved enough to write this. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing this. I don’t think you are a “fuck up”, I find you are a very brave and inspiring person. You convinced me to check out the “Refuse to choose” book, and omg I’m a scanner!! I feel so validated!!! I know there are other people that watch your videos right now that feel the same way and it seems like a small number of people now, but I’m confident that the universe is working in your favor, even if things feel really dark and scary right now. I only recently started watching your videos (post freelance writers club content) and it’s been the most relatable content for me. I’m tired of people lying to me and your channel has given me some hope. It really sucks that other people are pushing all of this junk and toxic crap or they get caught in lies over and over and they never apologize but still profit from it, and here you are trying to be authentic and do something different, and it’s just not working out. I have some ideas. Maybe you have considered some of these things already, but I’ll throw them out anyways. - You mentioned that you are using squarespace for something (sorry, don’t remember for exactly what). I’m looking at the pricing for squarespace, and it seems pretty pricey at $16 a month. I’m using WordPress for my blog and my hosting is with Hostinger, and their pricing is $2.99 a month. So $16 for 12 months is $192 and $2.99 for 12 months is $35.88, which feels like a huge gap to me, depending on one’s budget. It’s definitely more work to set up, but depending on how much you use it, it might be worth it. This might not even move the needle for you, but just throwing it out there. - You mentioned you have loans, I think on your piano and something else. I haven’t worked in lending, but I have worked in the financial industry, so I have my own thoughts and viewpoints on this. While every lender would ideally get paid their full amount, I’m sure a lender would rather work with you to modify the loan to get paid something rather than get nothing at all. Also, there might be an option to refinance to a lower rate (if that’s possible, not really sure). You might also be able to consolidate multiple loans to a single loan to get a better interest rate. Also, as a last resort, you might need to sell some items in order to pay off the debts or atleast pay a decent chunk on it, so you aren’t paying a crazy amount of interest (assuming that some of the debt is credit card debt and you are only making minimum payments). Also, if you do have credit card debt, I DO NOT RECOMMEND getting a 0% apr card and doing a balance transfer, because while it may help you in the short term, it could put you in a more dangerous position by 1) acquiring more debt and 2) not doing enough long term planning to think about how you are going to pay off that debt when the 0% apr is over. - I don’t think there is any shame in getting help with food stamps. Of course, we would all love to be ✨independent✨and our pride tells us that we can't do it, but sometimes we really do need the help.. you know? And I’m not sure if it’s an option for you, but there might be food banks around you and you shouldn’t have to pay any money for that. I used to live in San Francisco and there were tons of food banks all around the city with huge lines around them and nobody bats an eye. And besides, if someone is going to judge you for food stamps and going to a food bank, is that really someone you need to keep in your inner circle? I think not. Those kinds of people will never provide you solutions, only problems. - This is your house right? Have you thought about renting a room out, maybe just for a little bit? Is there a guest room outside your house you could rent out? I’m not going to pretend it’s easy, but depending on your location and your place, it could help stretch out your funds just a little bit more. - Disclaimer, I haven’t personally tried this, but I did some googling and there might be some free therapy that’s done through volunteers? This doesn’t replace an actual therapist, but desperate times call for desperate measures right? And I always view depression as something serious that needs to be addressed quickly before it spirals out of control. I did some googling and buddyhelp.org/ , www.7cups.com/ , and www.211.org/ popped up (again, I haven't tried these myself, so results may vary). Also, if those don’t seem like a good fit, maybe you can email your previous therapist to see if they know of any free resources? Please keep us posted, good or bad, with whatever happens next. Jason

Jason, thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas. These are great! I agree re: WordPress costing less...though it can take a bit more time. I had wondered if maybe you could rent a room, too, Colleen. And I don't think there should be any shame about needing or asking for assistance. I'm disabled, but not enough so to qualify for disability. I have food stamps and Medicaid (I also have a sort of volunteer role at one of the food banks), plus I have a housing voucher. I don't love being this reliant on the government and I aspire to be more financially independent, at some point in the next few years. But, for now, it is what it is. I also wonder if maybe downsizing would be a good idea, in whatever ways that looks like for you, Colleen?

COLLEEN I cannot tell you how much I needed to hear this. First and foremost, I am so sorry you are in this situation that is so mentally and financially taxing, and I really hope things turn around soon (we are not wishing for your demise, I promise!) In March 2023 I committed to freelance copywriting full time (I have attended multiple of your info sessions and purchased a few products - big fan), and I cannot tell you how much I relate to everything you just said. In the last few months I have lost nearly all of my clients, in June I made a whopping $75, getting new ones has felt nearly impossible, and I have one month left until I run out of savings... AND I AM A PERSONAL FINANCE WRITER! Im terrified. I feel like a fraud most days, helping people with finances while I am struggling with my own. Seeing a creator I look up to so much be this vulnerable about your situation, your income, and your feelings was a huge relief. Some days it feels impossible to shake the guilt and shame and imposter syndrome. I just want you to know you are NOT alone in this, and we want to see you thrive!!!

I lost my job on June 15th this year. I was very scared. I originally worked as a copywriter for an advertising agency, then moved to a fast-moving consumer goods company and a gaming company. I feel it's difficult to find a good job, especially in the current market environment, where companies hope to find all-rounders at very low salaries. My friends around me complain while working, but at least they have a job to wake up to every day. I feel somewhat isolated. However, I know we will all get through this. Over the past four weeks, I've been preparing for my own entrepreneurial venture. I've taught myself how to build a website and am now learning how to write my first SEO article. Then I came across your video. Your passion and deep understanding of SEO skills initially drew me in. This really made me want to know more about you, so I saw your content. At first, it can feel very frustrating and overwhelming, not knowing what to do. If you want to cry, just cry out loud. It's okay. Your confusion is very understandable. As for whether to delete the previous content on your account, I would say these are part of your past. Because of this content, people can easily connect with you. Almost within 10 seconds of watching, people will surely like you for who you are. You will definitely come up with a solution after the sadness. Keep going.

Hey, girl! Hugs! I just wanted to say, in case it matters, that I found you from your old freelance writing content, but I'm also interested in this content. I don't have a desire to produce music, necessarily, but anything about being a creative and running a business, based on that, is right up my alley. Also, I know it seems really intimidating right now, but rock bottom is a magical place, because it really makes things crystal clear and can help open us up to receiving in a way that we might not be able to, otherwise. It requires surrender. I wrote and published a book on how to cultivate life force energy and feng shui your life (I'd be happy to send you a free PDF of it...LMK) and one of my favorite chapters is called "Use Rock Bottom as a Launching Pad". I'm sure that you will find your way, because you are worthy (whether you believe it, or not), you are brilliant and talented and savvy. So maybe you let your optimism run away from you, for a while, and you got in over your head with debt and bills and stuff. It happens to the best of us. I had a massive inheritance that I blew through in record time, based on such behavior. I was then essentially homeless for many years, until I manifested the apartment that I'm currently in...mostly for free. And now, I'm working to build up a business, so I can get into an even better position. But, I want to do it in such a way that it's sustainable, and so is my lifestyle. BTW, just because you have been blessed with abundance and are comparatively in a position of privilege doesn't mean that you aren't in pain or that your pain is less valid than someone who has less. Pain is pain. We all suffer. One thing I can offer, right now, is the saying "I wonder how this is all going to work itself out?" It's magical and it's gotten me out of plenty tight spots that I could just not imagine the solutions to, because I was in a really dark space and caught up in negative thinking. Also, I'm not getting that you're out-of-alignment. I know it sucks to be in the space that you're in, but it seems to me that you needed to learn these lessons. I hope that many people will learn from your sharing about them. THIS is gold. P.S. I just saw the part about Squarespace and that someone recommended WordPress. I'm a WordPress designer who is looking to rebuild my portfolio (it tanked, mostly for reasons beyond my control) and I'd be happy to help you transition over to WP, if you wanted to go in that direction. I could even potentially put you on my hosting plan for a small monthly fee. LMK if that interest you. Many blessings! - Claire

Commenting to let you know you're being heard. I promise you're not alone in feeling this way. The only thing that's helps me in similar emotional circumstances is to fall back on strict routine toward perfect health. Things tend to work out after only a little while, even though you seemingly have to feel down long enough to get through it. Do all the cliche holistic health things as your main priority: sleep well, journal, meditate, eat clean, fast for 24 hours a week, take a walk each day, exercise Hard a few times a week, do art things, find a volunteer opportunity (maybe at a library). See you on the other side. :)

In times like this it’s easy to put all our energy into emotions and not think straight about the right course of action. I’d say, let yourself go through it for a few days. It sucks, I’ve been there before. But, when your ready have a clear mind and figure what your going to do for money. There are options. Have you considered reading any books on online marketing? There are ways to research niches to see which ones are the best option for your videos or your content . If you’re putting out videos blind, you may want to research where the traffic and money is first. You probably know this already, but I’ve read a few good books on the subject. My nephew also has a studio and records people. He does make money doing it. He’s out in the middle of no where. But, people do pay for his services to record them. But, he still has a regular job. I’m a software engineer and about to quit my job because I can’t code anymore. Not 8 hours per day. I make good money, but same situation as you. 4-5k per month down the drain when you aren’t making money. I’m probably going to give up my apartment, move in with a family member, upskill, then move on what’s next. Been wanting to freelance and will try it. It may save my apartment. But, not sure. It’s all uncertainty, but we all have to go through it from time to time. It’s normal. Try to focus on the future and what’s next.

It is okay to feel like a failure. It is okay to cry and mourn and grieve and feel the depths of emotion you're going through. Everyone makes mistakes and has their down times in life. Now, I am not a business owner or freelancer. I have my cushy 9-5 that is super boring, but it pays the bills, and allows me plently of time and money to do other things I enjoy. So theres nothing wrong with that - even if its just temporary. I'd recommend if you need something now to apply with Robert Half (or another temp agency) for a temporary gig. Thats how I ended up in my current industry. With your background, I'm sure they could help you find something to do on a temporary 3-6 month basis even if its just data entry to help make some money and have some stability to allow you the space to think through things and make decisions on what business avenues to cut and which to go all in on. Wishing you the very best! ❤

Your openness, honesty, and genuine character shine through, and that’s why I’ll continue to follow you no matter what content you put out. You are far from a failure. I can relate deeply to your situation. I’ve tried my hand at writing books and left my 9-to-5 job due to burnout, only to face financial struggles and challenges in finding new ways to make a living. So many of us are going through tough times right now, and by sharing the behind the scenes stuff of the freelance world is just another reason why people appreciate you. Please don't delete your old content; it remains valuable and continues to help others, and if it's still bringing income all the better. Your willingness to share your journey, even the difficult parts, is incredibly empowering. You shouldn’t feel embarrassed or down on yourself for sharing your truth, and many people find solace and inspiration in your words. It’s important to remember that struggles are part of the human experience, and they don't negate your hard work and achievements. Those who hope for your failure are simply projecting negativity, and you don't deserve that burden. Your past content is still a valuable resource, and sponsored videos are just part of making a living and many of us are grateful for your work. I'm sure you know Life is NOT a straight line, there are some zigs and zags, some ups and downs. You built your business from the ground up before, do it again. You only failed to meet your expected time frame of your goals and dreams. If you look back you can find many positives along the journey. Begin Again!!!

Colleen! Sending love to you! I know you’re venting and not asking for advice. But hearing you talking so negatively about yourself I just can’t help it. You’re not a failure. You tried things and some things just didn’t work out and that’s fine. That’s life. Some things work others don’t, whether it’s bc of external or internal reasons. I’m in a similar position so maybe I shouldn’t be offering this advice but hopefully something I say will resonate with you to anyone else reading this. I saw your video about the book you read about having different interests. I actually bought it and started reading it thanks to you. Right now from what you’ve described it seems like your priority is making an income. I would focus on that and leave anything else to the side including the making music. I know it’s one of your passions but the bills need to be paid. You are the skills to do what it takes to get freelance clients. I would just stick to that, no more coaching or course. Solely stick getting freelance clients and trying not to use AI. I think that what sets apart the freelance writers that survive the AI revolution. You can do this. Focus on pitching everyday. You know that getting clients/pitching is just a numbers game. Maybe you can have a goal of sending X a mount of pitches a day. For a month or two. And hey you can even turn it into a “getting back in the freelance game” video. Watch me go from 0 clients to x amount of clients in 3-4 months. Idk. Just an idea. Of course if you don’t want to make writing content anymore that’s fine, don’t do it. But I bet that video would be a hit. I know it’s fun to want to do various things at once, but when we’re in rock bottom (including myself) focusing on one thing that we know will help us in the slightest is the best course of action. When you start making money you’re going to feel better and that will help you move the needle forward in other areas of your life. But I wouldn’t take on too much. Prioritize getting clients and focus on that until you feel like you have the energy and mental capacity to add something else on. Think of freelancing as your job. You don’t have to love it. It just has to pay your bills for now. I commend you for showing the ugly side of entrepreneurship. Most don’t. And it’s not what it’s portrayed to be on social media. It’s very hard. It’s not for everyone. I have so many more ideas for you on how to help you make money. 😅 Again, most of these ideas are based around freelancing so I know that it’s not something you want to make content around however if you decide to fuck it I’ll do this for now to make money then here are a few more ideas for you. After you have your clients you can create short form videos on IG or TT and you can make low ticket digital products. In fact I think you have some already. You can make videos to promote those low ticket products. Have you heard of Abigail Peugh? She teaches how to do IG and sell digital products she’s amazing. You could show the ugly side of entrepreneurship on IG. This takes time though. Imo you’d have to create at least a reel a day. But if you get good at it you can make bank selling low ticket digital products. Another idea I have for you is the Amazon Influencer Program. It’s not the Amazon associates where you share a link and you get commissions. This is where you make short review videos of products sold on Amazon and upload them to Amazon. You can make good money with this. And it’s probably the fastest thing you can do right now to make money. Actually it’s a great time to start bc prime day is coming up. It has 2 steps to get accepted. You have to apply with a social media account either KZitem, IG or TikTok. They are looking for engagement. You’ll know instantly if you’re accepted. I would try with your IG. Then after that you create 3 video reviews and upload them, these will take a few days up to a few weeks to be approved or denied. If you’re approved you’re in and you can start uploading as many videos are you want. There’s a Facebook group called Amazon Influencer Program, you can join to learn more about it. i hope some of this is helpful. best of luck.

I’m sorry you’re going through it Colleen. Sounds like a rock bottom for sure (former TBMer here). If you’re still in the Pathway, maybe now is the time to make that a daily practice if you’re not already? Especially if you can’t do therapy. Seems like this is really bringing up some core wounds for you, and maybe that’s the point? I know that’s irritating to say but there it is. Another practice I like is called Journal Speak, maybe that could help you process some of this stuff too. It’s so interesting, I have a close friend who went through this a couple months ago as well. She and her husband ended up moving in with her in laws and they’re figuring it all out now, but she’s still struggling too. If cash is your number one issue, can you get any temporary job to just get some money coming in? Have you reached out to your personal network to see if anyone knows of any opportunities? Like people you actually know. With my friend, I think one of the big reasons she ended up falling as far as she did is she didn’t tell anyone what was going on. Or at least not to the extent of how bad it really was… until it was really really bad. Tell your people what’s happening and ask if they have any leads for you, freelancing or 9-5. There’s my unsolicited advice. 😅 Rooting for you~ ❤

Take the email course sticky notes off the wall Colleen! Burn them! You need to follow your intuition and begin a spiritual practice. I never heard you discussing your spirituality. Who is reading your runes and cards? How do you pray? Are you Celtic? I feel for you. Ohio girls, we don't need other crabs in the barrel, we'll pull ourselves down easy.

I do talk about spirituality on this channel! I do To Be Magnetic's manifestation program. It's amazing and it's definitely been helping me get through these hard times.

I rarly comment on videos, but I had to say that. You didn't sadnly forget how to write, right ? You can get new clients. Do more outreaches and stop wasting time on learning because u know, and I know that you are procrastinating and not working on the things that really make the money. When it comes to work, there is nothing like I hate this, and I love that. If you were a good copywriter, there is no way that you are not anymore. You can do music in your free time but now It's the time for the real work. If you wanted some help, I would love to give you that, but you need to stop music for now and focus on the real work.

I thought about buying your course but then pulled back after I saw you discussing your drug usage in a video with Alex. You shouldn’t admit to such things publicly because clients might see that and fire you.

Personal struggles, like overcoming addiction, don’t diminish someone’s professional capabilities; they highlight resilience and strength. Sharing these experiences can be incredibly inspiring and empowering, showing others that success is possible despite challenges. The economic struggles people are facing right now, are impacting businesses more than anything else, sadly. Kudos to you for building a successful business from scratch and being open about your journey.

You shouldn't admit to being so openly judgemental towards addicts. Imagine having the assumption that anybody who has ever struggled with addiction isn't intellectually capable enough to do their job. Learning from personal challenges is absolutely something people should be proud of and they shouldn't be ashamed of mistakes in their past, especially ones that they have overcome due to their own willpower and strength. Just because you are afraid of working with someone who's struggled in their past, does not mean other clients will think the same.
