Goniopora are large polyp stony coral that has had hobbyists in a love-hate relationship for decades. Early in the hobby large red and green goniopora would grace reef stores across the country. Challenging hobbyists to improve goniopora husbandry.
With more understanding and innovative techniques in reef keeping, goniopora cultivation and propagation has had much more success.
An enormous amount of color varieties are surging in popularity with hobbyists. The TSA rose petal goni boasts brillant pinks, oranges and yellows. The amazeballs goni has brilliant yellow stalks with metallic orange flowering polyps. The glitter bomb goni has a bright green base with metalic flakes scattered through out. The variety seems endless.
Goniopora belong to a series of coral called flowerpots. Some flowerpot corals have a close resemblance to goni’s, such as the alveopora and bernardpora. Alveopora can be distinguished by counting 12 tentacles compared to goniopora's typical 24. Bernardpora have been nicknamed the micro-goni, another gorgeous addition to the hobby, growing in popularity. But err on the side of caution because these species could potentially sting one another.
Provide goniopora with low to medium light, a par between 100 - 160 works well.
Goni’s prefer more nutrient rich water with measurable nitrates and phosphates. Goniopora can consume fine particle coral foods such as benepets and other powdered coral foods.
Moderate flow will be the sweet spot for your goni. Their swaying tentacles create a picturesque reef scene.
