Omg had no idea you were back but anyway - I can definitely relate to what you’re saying. I used to have these frustrations many years ago but over time I’ve learnt to just accept that what will be will be. All I can do is what’s in my control which is to try and make good videos for the great people that support me rather than focus on those who don’t. It can de a bit disheartening when you see people who make millions a year teaching men how to “wear a white t shirt” but unfortunately I’ve come to accept that more people want to learn how to “style jeans with white sneakers” than people that care about a fashion runway show analysis.

My take; the context here is recognition vs reception and how it relates to the quality of your content. You have among the best quality content of all fashion creators on youtube but your reach is not as big (however the people whom it reaches, the content has a big impact on them). Think of it like this; you may have a smaller reach but the people you reach truly recognize your content as special, I know I do.

the transparency and vulnerability of your struggle is endearing, relatable, and at the heart of my appreciation of this channel. While content creators who have settled into a stable and predicable formula may provide a reliable form of escapist distraction, your videos speak to the contemporary crisis of identity production itself, and the schizoid nature of being a ghost in this machine. To make your channel formulaic would be to undermine the very conflict which makes it compelling, namely the struggle between the "creator" and the "content." Your channel has stakes, and speaks, whether you mean for it to or not, to the psychological machinations of art, performance, and media in the 21st century.

@@BraveNewWear your channel does not exude it, so much as it speaks to it, the experience we all share of having to construct an authentic and commercially viable image of ourselves, our profile, feeling beholden to it, resenting it, desiring it. When I see you struggling to optimize yourself for consumption, I see myself and my peers; I see our whole culture.

I used to watch teaching men’s fashion in high school, and he never connected with me. The style guides can give confidence initially, but in end the results are clinical and formulaic. The introduction you give to fashion includes the exploration of other peoples art, finding the interest or motivation it comes from, as well as learning to create that for ourselves. Your content is genuine, and so your audience may be smaller, but I’ve had great conversations based off of new ideas from your videos with those around me and I’m grateful for your perspective. Your show and other creators who approach fashion this way act as a station people can use to explore deep understanding of options, feel the excitement of learning to experiment and express their ideas, then move in the direction they genuinely want to. This ends up being so much more fulfilling, and is only possible by getting a boost from passionate people like yourself. Thank you.

Aaron your words are too kind, I am thrilled to hear my videos might have sparked a conversation truly. two things. 1. consistency helps. drew talks about how he much he has to grind to produce content. at first, he was pushing himselt to post on tiktok daily for long periods of time. now he posts his videos every sunday. dude's doing tiktoks, youtube vids, vlogs, curated instagram posts, collabs, and podcasts. honestly, the amount of work he does, doesn't equate to his viewership, imo. i wouldn't be able to keep it up, personally. 2. some producer was being mentored by i believe jay-z, and this producer kept making really eccentric, new, original sounds in his beats. but none of it was getting any radio play, and he kept asking what's the missing ingredient. the mentor was quoted along the lines of "man you can either cater your sound slightly more to the general public, or you can keep being the only one listening to your beats in your basement" .

this was a great video, not just in terms of honesty and giving platform to other creators, but especially when in comes to questioning oneself. I think you did a great job in captioning what most young males within the fashion community are thinking for themselves in their head. Even though I don't make content I can very much relate to your thought process on a day to day basis when I see other guys wearing or talking about stuff I have an appreciation for and get annoyed by myself, questioning why I wasn't able to do it like that or why I can't be a s nonchalant about the topic I'm interested in. I guess it all comes down to the public perception and image, when someone is really passionate about something the head can sometimes get in the way of producing something completely true to oneself, because of the high standards one sets due to their passion.
@BraveNewWear
Жыл бұрын
i'll say this about high standards - at least for me, my "process" is to recognize I need to create a lot of stuff long before my content is at the level of my taste. The other content creators are selling to the Amazon shoppers of internet fashion content - their content is a commodity. It conforms to everything else that's out there so that it's easily understood (ie. it's incredibly predictable what I'll get from following one girl come across one day who looks the same as the other 1000 like her I already follow), low-pressure to produce, and with very low barriers to entry (everyone's little sister can become this girl just by doing what everyone else is doing). The issue with this is that those folks are competing with 50 million others to stay relevant or steal a small piece of the marketshare - apart from the people in your example, I'm sure 99% of these soulless creators never stand out and see slow or no growth. Your content, on the other hand, is unique and much harder replicate (ie. requires more smarts to have a perspective worth sharing). The issue is that your market is smaller, because people with a real, almost academic interest in fashion and culture are more rare I hope you don't dumb down your content but I think your value is in influencing and commanding the attention of consumers who really care and will spend a lot, in a places that the teaching fashion guy could never get his audience to patronize. Rather than making money off of views, you'll get the partnership opportunities from luxury and artisanal brands who take notice, because I'm sure you'd drive high rates of conversion from brand deals despite a smaller audience (you probably know this).

@@BraveNewWear On a more serious note, this is the only fashion channel I've ever been able to tolerate watching. No offense to them, but a lot of the more popular channels you mention in this video are making incredibly formulaic, derivative content that pleases the algorithm (which likely plays a big part in why they're so popular). They all talk about the same brands and trends. They all do the same lo-fi music b-roll. It feels like after all these years people are STILL trying to imitate old GearedTowardsGear content. There's probably enough of this cookie-cutter content out there to make an hour long supercut of all these guys saying the world "archival". Your videos have always felt authentic and unique, mostly because you don't do what everyone else does. There's naturally going to be a smaller viewerbase for stuff that strays from the norm.

Brother, you inspired me to try to be a creative, to study design, music production, art, etc. and yet you suffer from the same shit that I suffer, I don't put myself fully into anything , because that way I can keep lying to myself that I'm only not successful because I haven't tried that hard or I'm just not that dumb to make the same trash repetitive content that everyone else does. This copium mentality makes me feel better than everyone else, but also keep making me feel like a fraud. I'm trying to break this cycle, stop reading so many fashion publications and start building skills that can make the knowledge that I accumulated being a snob useful. In your case you already have great journalistic and writing skills, you have a core audience that deeply cares about what you have to say, just keep doing what you love doing that somehow you will make a living out of it, as Kevin Kelly said, you only need 1000 true fans to make a living out of anything. If I were in your position I would already consider myself successful.
