If you have the time at some point you should visit the war museum in Narvik. In April 1940 Narvik was occupied by nazi-Germany Controlling the iron ore shipment was one of the main reason for invading Norway. Germany needed the iron ore for their war industry. 5000 Polish troops, under French command, 10000 French and 10000 British navy came to Norway shortly after ....in order to take back control of the area around Narvik together with the Norwegians....and they did so ....after hard battles in the extreme terrain you can see for yourself. The Polish troops attacked Narvik from south ....they fought their way from Skjomen across the mountain (up to 1000 meter elevation) to Ankenes before they had to cross the narrow Beisfjorden onto Narvik itself. The French and Norwegians started in the north from Gratangen across the mountains to Bjerkvik and Bjørnefjell. Narvik was completely demolished with only a small church left. This was the first battle lost for Hitler's troops during WW2. The Allied force that came to help Norway were really, really poor equipped. They had no idea about the conditions with meter deep snow and snow storm in May month. They came on big warships ....but had no landing crafts. The solution was that over 1000 local fisher men with their fishing vessels, unarmed wooden vessels, were involved ....and did all the logistics for 35000 soldiers and all their equipment. My grandfather was one of those who did this ....like ferrying the Polish troops to Skjomen. As you know it is midnight sun in May in this area so there were no where to hide in the non existing darkness when getting close to Narvik. The crazy thing with the battle of Narvik was that the British command had already decided to withdraw all troops out from Norway before the fight of Narvik itself had started.....due to the German invasion into Belgium and Framce. The Norwegians were not informed of the British decision. Narvik was taken back but just a few days later the Allied forces left and the Norwegians had no option other than leave the control into the hands of the nazi-Germans ....again. The Polish heroic contribution in the battle of Narvik will always be remembered here. Their short lived victory at Narvik could they only surf on for a few weeks. The Polish went with the French troops back to France ....and was set into battle in Normandy....were most of them were lost in the fighting. Much more information about this is to be found at the war museum in Narvik.. The reason for building the Hålogaland bridge was not only to reduce the distances. The existing stretch of E6 between Narvik and Rombaken bridge was narrow and goes in extremely steep terrain. A number of avalanches and accidents had made it necessary to do something. A very long tunnel from Narvik to Rombaken would cost a lot ....and would not make the distance any shorter. The new bridge was the answer for both of the problems.

I know your frustrations when it comes to drivers slowing down around corners for know real reason. You see that a lot over in the Republic of Ireland. It's very annoying. 😂🙄

Hi KG, this was such a fun trip with all the funny things you say that makes me laugh. Finally, the snow is melting away. A few major bumps in the roads but you manage to handle it with ease. Thanks for a great and fun filled trip. Fresh bananas, eat them while they are firm. 🍌😁
