The cropped jacket is so cute 🥺 i'm so glad you went with your choice (but that's how i do things when i'm hesitating between 2 things lmao, i ask ppl to choose for me and if i disagree with the result... well, i kinda already knew what i wanted, i just didn't realize)

Some artists use a "studio log" which records all the data applicable to a work. I have one for my pottery studio in which I record inspiration, any forms /tools used, type of clay, firing temps, and glaze or glazes. Every time I make something I truly believe that it is firmly entrenched in my memory. A few years later I can look at a piece and wonder if it is one I made. (I have actually checked for signatures.....) It seems like a great deal of faff at the time - but that log book has saved me many times. Many times. I do recommend the practice. However, I see why you might see it as unnecessary and a waste of life. Just offering the example. Love the new garment direction.

That sounds really smart. And I do refer back to old videos or old costume diary posts, but I don't always have all the info I need there.

If you have time, you could make the double collar and have it snap on on the inside. That could make the two jackets you were envisioning for the show. They wouldn't have to be perfect for the stage production and would give a different feel to the whole thing. And a black collars would be perfect for the funeral scene.

LOL! I understand the weight thing. I made my own Doctor Strange Infinity Cloak from scratch, using three layers of material (one was a rather heavy felt-ish material) and a lot of trim and embroidery, and the darn thing is close to 10lbs. I wore it all day twice, and OMG my shoulders were SO SORE. My current cosplay project is made out of linen and cotton, THANK GOODNESS. Lesson learned!

The jacket looks wonderful! I really enjoy the realization that all sewers think out loud when we go off the pattern! I also like the look without the collar. Your going to look great on stage!!

If you add little darts at the neck edge, on either side of the center back seam, you will find the fit is better. Most women have a small rise in this area of the neck / upper back and tiny darts make the fit and comfort level better. Also will help with any collars sitting flatter and not rising up especially when sitting. But looking gooood

You need to consult some resources on “tailoring “ to find out more about traditional ways of creating lapels, especially a notched or 2 pc. one. A lapel usually has a layer of interfacing to give it more structure and help keep it in place on your fold line.

I think at least some of the extra fabric at the back of the neck is ease for the fold collar. I've seen a shoulder adjustment to add a shawl collar to a block, so you could plan the reverse, if you're ever removing a collar again.

Great! Because I am so far along in years, there's no time to waste dithering. And I am such ditherer. My dither-reduction method is (when there are two choices) Toss A Coin. If you like what the coin says, go with that. If you *don't*, then choose the other. This honestly has saved me hours. No good if there are three choices. I always err on the side like: I will make the long as I could cut it shorter later....

Oh wow, I love Rag Time. I have seen it twice. I love singing along with mother's songs on the CD. I thought, maybe you could go with the Jacket off in the beginning scene, and the Jacket on in another one other scene . Break a Leg!!!

Can you please edit your comment to not use that word to describe the Harlem ensemble? I know it is historically accurate, and used in the show, but I don't want it on my channel. For our costumes, in the opening, most of the New Rochelle group are in white and cream, the immigrant ensemble tends to be in browns, and the Harlem ensemble is in more colorful clothing.

You can always make additional collar that can be pinned to it that will be "unflattering" and remove it for second scene (something working similar to colar pieces you've got from last antique hall unboxing) :)

I think the little shoulder collar thing is cute and you should save the pattern for something in a brighter color so that you could actually see it. In my totally unsolicited opinion you made the right decision. A- it’s a lot of fiddling work for black on navy that wouldn’t be very noticeable from the audience (depending upon your lighting, what do I know, right?) and B- if it’s supposed to be “unflattering” maybe leave off fancy extras? That said it’s turning into a lovely formal suit.

I am glad you decided against the additional collar. The jacket looks great! I did my first collar on an easter dress this year. It is only the 9 year olds enthusiasm and joy and having a collar that makes me think about making more.

I could understand the struggle with collars and I tend to make a collar for a jacket in a way similar to a facing or I freehand it on my flat draft or drape it as a separate piece

Collars are evil. Worse than sleeves as far as I’m concerned. If you make the Swiss waist tall enough you may be able to wear the jacket tucked and untucked. That could give you the 2 different looks for the scenes you were originally wanting.

Since you are going to have to say that whatever you’re wearing is ‘unflattering’, you’d better choose the unflattering one? Or have I totally misunderstood? Never mind, it’s going to be fun anyway.
