I saw this movie in 2007, but I was too young to understand it. Now I got it. Great scene, especially when she says he's not a jerk. He's a National Book Award Winner. I almost cry.

My favorite line in this move: “You can take all the novels in the world and not one of them will make you feel as good as fast as ‘I got sunshine/on a cloudy day/when it’s cold outside/I got the month of May” soooo true! Made me really appreciate music in a different way.

I would have to say, Gee Bob, coming from the most overrated musician of the 20th (and, so far, the 21st) centuries, thank you very much. That literally means everything to me; and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

Andrew, leaving aside the debate about Dylan, I wish Hugh had chosen a less syrupy song as an example of a song with the impact that he believes in. If he had to say the line as written I hope he privately cringed. I would have chosen, for example, Miracles by Jefferson Starship which has a remarkable lyrical, transcendent quality and captures the spirit of the '60's counterculture and California at their best. All and all, however, I really liked the songs in the movie even though I'm into the English blues and their roots and the protest songs of the '60s. a great song, even if it is romantic as hell, has a life of its own that is captivating. McCartney said that Lennon would never want to admit it publically but he in fact was a romantic!

I just got out of the army and was feeling empty, my brother came to live with to make sure I was okay. I remember waking him at 3am and we sat and watched this movie. I didn’t realize how this scene related to me until my brother looked at me. I was in a bad spot but this scene about being depressed and survival guilt has, well I’m better for watching it and I always watch when I’m down. Until Valhalla

This movie inspired me to wanna write songs. But it's not as easy as i thought and despite my mental state... it isn't even near the level of professionalism and I already want to write a song for someone I know who is a performer. Does anyone have any ideas that could help? Thanks.

I know exactly where you're coming from. In the words of Stephen Sontheim, "Music is the richest art form because it's the most abstract." You can't really explain when it feels right vs. when it does, but when you know, you know. It took me a really long time to have the confidence to try writing original songs and I only started a couple years ago (and only because the place where I used to sit in and play covers stopped hosting the musicians' gathering after Covid), so maybe I'm not the most reliable source for advice, but here's what I've learned so far. 1. Like with anything else, the best way to get better is to keep failing until you don't. Didn't like the song you just wrote? Who cares, write another one! And keep writing them until you finally land on something you feel has merit. Eventually, you'll learn how to recognize what you are and aren't best at and use both to your advantage, even if it's not perfect (because perfect is the enemy of good). 2. It helps to have a goal. I once hear Paul McCartney say that, when he started out, he had to make sure the songs were memorable so "we wouldn't forget them" and fun because "we didn't want to get bored playing them," and that more or less described my goal: I wanted something I could play at an open mic with just me and a guitar, something that'd be entertaining for 3-5 minutes to an audience who'd be seeing a lot of similar acts throughout the night, so I had to make something that sounded good to me, personally, enough that I could play it to people's faces on multiple occasions, and which was uniquely me without being too personal. If your goal is to write something for your friend to sing, I suggest writing with the friend in mind: what kind of voice to they have? What kind of feeling does it evoke? Are they singing it as a showcase for their vocals? Are they singing for a crowd, or for a recording? Hope that helps! Good luck!

Finding mistakes in movies is fun! In another movie Barrymore was in, her character was talking to her mom and they had a plate in front of them. But in the next scene, she picked it up and the plate was full of cookies. 🤣
