Turning off life support wouldn't actually do anything in the short term. All it does is stops adding oxygen/atmosphere to the different areas of the ship. However, you'd still have breathable air for a limited period. On a ship that size, even with a full crew, you'd likely have at least 10 or so hours of breathable air within the ship after LS is stopped... Not to mention, this is a Federation ship... they have back-ups of back-ups. One such feature being that if the back-up LS systems go down, they have small auto-release tanks built into the wall, allowing up to 30 minutes of breathable air to be released in an absolute emergency.

He always went WAAAY over the top with his stories, and he went with plots that made no sense; like the episode where Janeway and Paris when to Warp 10 and "De-evolved" ...into Lizards?? He Constantly went with Outrageous sciencey plots that were Just Crazy.. But Berman Kept him on for Years and Years.. Eventually making Enterprise With him.. I think Star Trek would never have left TV if they'd get new writers every year. That's what they did the first few years of TNG, and those seasons were great in my opinion.

@@pepperVenge Well you could definitely see a difference in the writing on the different shows. The writing for TNG and DS9 was infinitely better then it was for VOY and ENT. I'm not really sure if we can blame any one specific writer for that. I think the star trek shows as we know them would have ended even if ENT was a better show, space scifi of that type has fallen out of popularity with the general public. Just to name a few Dark Matter, SG-U, The Orville and the Expanse were all good shows and all of them were canceled from television. Shows like this can only survive on streaming networks where their fan base will pay to watch them. It's sad but this genre of TV is now just a small niche.

I always thought the "all power from life support" thing in the middle of battle was sort of humorous. Assuming life support works more or less the same in the 25 century as it does today it would be stuff like CO2 scrubbers, oxygen generators, air circulation systems and the like. The power to run such devices would likely be trivial even on a huge ship compared to things like shields, impulse engines, sensors, deflectors, warp drive, phasers, transporters etc. It would be like shutting off a nightlight and hoping to use the power to run your furnace. Also the danger of shutting down life support is also likely overstated since on a ship with such a massive volume as these it would take days for CO2 to reach dangerous levels even with a full crew.

Life support surprisingly uses a lot of power. For starters there is artificial gravity. This in itself uses a lot of power. Then there's the power required to keep a ship cool. Without massive cooling systems, the ships interior would roast due to the warp plasma running through all the conduits.

@BYERE
4 жыл бұрын
Up to the point of this episode, it was deemed that his program was too large and the computer wasn't powerful enough to process more than one copy of his program at a time, his program even degrading badly at one point because of his continued operation. This episode was from mid-season 4, not long after Seven of Nine joined the crew. It's likely safe to assume that after they regained The Doctor from this mission, they decided to start creating back-up units with the aid of Seven's Borg knowledge in case they ever lost him again. The reason it's safe to assume that they started making the back-ups after this point is because not long after this episode, within the same season in fact, there's an episode known as Living Witness, which has The Doctor be reactivated from a back-up unit, ~700 years after it was left on an alien world.

I've never understood in all these different space sci-fi shows/movies that it's so taboo to reroute power from life support in a moment of crisis. They always act like temporarily rerouting power from life support is some terribly risky thing to do. In a space ship life support has two jobs, 1: provide oxygen 2: keep the livable space warm. Without life support running, it would still take many hours before either lack of oxygen or freezing temperatures would become a problem. So temporarily taking power from life support for a few minutes to bolster shields or weapons in a moment of crisis should be no problem at all.

@robertballasty395

Well, it half made sense at the beginning, but they framed it poorly. The idea (initially) was that even if the EMH was perfectly satisfactory for in-sickbay duties, with their flesh-and-blood doctor & nurse dead, they would need someone qualified to respond to medical emergencies elsewhere on ship or for landing parties. The rationale was that Tom minored in biology at the Academy, so he was most qualified* (out of ~140-150 combined crew?). That was weak. Minoring in bio doesn't exactly make you an EMT or an OR nurse. * I'll assume Janeway, as a former science officer, though she probably had concentrated more in physics and stuff, was higher rated than Tom in biology - but being Captain, she couldn't just leave the bridge some times for medical emergencies (or less than emergencies). In my head canon, I rewrote it that young Ensign Paris, fresh out of the Academy and on his first space assignment, was ambitious (not necessarily altruistic ambitious, but advancement ambitious), and having liked and/or done well in biology, went for a corpsman rating - to get more chances at landing party assignments, to get more attention, to build his general record for promotion, so he could angle for the assignments (helm, piloting) that he did want. That was more plausible for the backup/EMT stuff they needed him for. Then, Kes emerged as the fast learner and quickly became the primary medical assistant in most cases. The Doctor got the mobile emitter, Kes left. That led to the Doctor being able to take away missions, but also raised the stakes on someone being needed to cover sickbay if he was away. Seven eventually took part of that role, and there were a couple of episodes where we saw crew in science-division blue helping out in sickbay, but... What really didn't make sense was we never saw them (especially after Kes left) offering the training (or promotion/transfer) to anyone willing to take on the assignment.

I seriously don't get the first bit. the ship is capable of holding the EHM program. so why didn't they copy it. or be able to make a replacement.

there was a backup drive containing the program but it was stolen. the program is quite large and quite complicated so making a copy is not possible in the delta quad

They didn’t have any time left. Nor were they any good at it.

How do you get to hell? Very simple: claim that you're innocent. How do you get to heaven? Very simple: Admit that you're not Innocent, you're guilty and ask for mercy. How to know if you're guilty or not? Simply: Compare your life to the Ten Commandments God gave you in the Bible. Everyone agrees that if people followed the ten commandments there would be no need for governments or police. Do not lie. Do not steal. Do not commit adultery. Do not insult God by using his name as a cuss word. There are six more but let's just leave it at that. How many lies have you told in your life? Have you ever taken anything that didn't belong to you? Jesus said, if you look at a women lustfully you've already committed adultery in your heart with that woman. How many times a day do you do that? Do you use God's name as a cuss word? Would you do that with your own mother's name? If you answer these questions honestly you know that you're guilty. God can justly punish you and send you to hell. Ask him for mercy. His name is Jesus. It's as simple as this, The Ten Commandments are called the moral law. You and I broke God's laws. Jesus paid the fine. The fine is death. Ezekiel 18:20 - "The soul who sins shall die. That's why Jesus had to die on the cross for our sins. This is why God is able to give us Mercy. Option A. You die for your own sins. Option B. Ask for mercy and accept that Jesus died on the cross for you
