The same thing happened to my dad in the 1960's. I think it was some sort of real estate investment scam, where the same piece of (almost worthless) land was 'sold' multiple times to a number of investors with promises they'd make big bucks with some supposed proposed development that would be built on it. Occasionally some people would get a little dividend that was simply money skimmed from new investors. Fortunately, my dad didn't invest more than he could afford to loose, so although he never really got his money back, at least he didn't go broke in the process. . and, as in your case, he turned it into a valuable leaning lesson for me.

We've all made loans that were not repaid by friends (and relatives, sadly) and the rare outright theft like you were victim to. You LEARNED something and in the end that will serve you much more in Life. Beating yourself up over this is NOT productive, but you'll always remember this "sting". Just learn from it and be a smarter, wiser man! And THANK YOU for being a MAN and sharing this... you are helping potential new victims and doing so after eating some crow! Most would hide this out of shame, you did not! Most are not capable of what you've just done here, Tyler! Great work!

I see ads on TV to invest in bitcoin mining. I bet they are also a ponzi scheme.

While crypto currencies are currently a financial darling, take it from me stay the hell away from things like investment places promising great returns on crypto mining, if there was a market ripe for ponzi schemes it is crypto. The whole way they do mining is bizarre (it comes down to using a lot of computing power to solve complicated problems, if you solve the problem you get awarded bitcoin or whatever), and it is almost completely unregulated, and given that crypto by its very nature is anonymous, it is ripe for exploitation.

There is no way they could guarantee a 20% profit to investors, like they claim. That is a big red flag.

And another red flag when they guarantee a certain amount or percentage. The market can't be predicted so how are they able to say 15 to 20% guaranteed return? That is a big red flag to me.

Am sorry your going through this On another note I brought one of the ants that you recommended for about $30:00. My apartment is a brick building and I get about 30 channels and I use my phone as a hot spot to watch KZitem and lg channels. Thank you for what you do to for helping me not to pay for cable. Am on a fixed income and if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be able to watch tv. I'll pray for you. ❤

I am so sorry this happened to you. Why is it that bad people always take advantage of good people like yourself. You are here to help complete strangers, as you have helped me when I cut the cord, and it makes me so angry that people like that take advantage of good people such as yourself. Thanks for all of your antenna help!

The only private investment for retirement should be low fee Index funds through Vanguard or the like. There is no quick or guaranteed route to big returns.

With retirement funds I agree index funds are a great base investment. What I tell people (I am not a financial advisor ) is put 80% into long term index funds, and the other 20% if you want to play investor and invest in high yield but risky funds, stocks, and so forth, go ahead (or do 90-10).

Thank you for being so forthcoming. I’ve never invested in a private company, but we can all make similar mistakes. In our case, we purchased acreage and built “the nicest house in s poor neighborhood” and probably lost over $200k when we finally sold that house. As investor, I believe the 4% rule applies. Limit one’s individual investments to 4% of one’s overall portfolio.

I'm glad Tyler that this happened when you were young. I made a similar mistake when I was about 23 years old and lost a lot of money like you. I've never made that mistake again and did recover the loss since I am now 66. Imagine how people my age feel who got caught up in this scam. All the best.
