Mazda tech here, the number one factor on why all Mazda's are extremely comfortable is the fact that the position of the dead pedal and the gas pedal are specifically designed to be shoulder width apart maintaining your body's natural neutral position, combined with the setting of infotainment controls you never have to reach over or torque your body out of your neutral position to control the radio/screen. If you own a Mazda keep this in mind next time you hop in your car and remember this seemly obscure comment on a shortcircuit video.

That was something my salesman had pointed out that didn't really set in till after a few years of ownership and driving other vehicles more regularly. The control knob cluster is in such a natural position if your arm is resting on the center console, it makes it so easy to navigate menus change settings etc while driving. Only thing that sucks is if you have a large bottle or cup in the cup holder having to crane your hand over top of it/them to access the knob can be a bit of pain lol.

I went much older than that for my first car with a 1966, but I feel you. There's so much room in my engine bay. The car was built to accommodate a 400 cubic inch big block V8 but mine has a 330 cubic inch small block V8. There's a foot on all sides of the engine except from top and bottom, everything is easy to get to. It's not as "refined" looking as a modern engine bay with all the plastic shrouds and noise dampeners, but everything is accessible. It has a two speed automatic transmission, not as simple as a manual but still reliable (GM 2 speeds had a reputation for being immortal) and still maintains a bit of fun factor because car designers back then were wizards when it came to gearing. It handles well for a car its age, has plenty of power, and now that I've mostly restored it, is pretty reliable. I'd love to put a limited slip differential in it, though. That would complete its conversion from obsolete grocery getter to weekend fun car and occasional daily driver. Have to do my research on that, though, I want to keep the factory gear ratios if possible since I plan on keeping the factory engine and transmission.

So cool to see Alex in an MX-5. My first car was an NA, my second car was also an NA from 1989 (one of the first built), and now I drive an NC because I wanted a bit more comfort. I've driven it on the track (Zandvoort), drifted with it, driven through snow, took it on the Nürburgring, and it's my daily driver to work. Many people see the MX-5 as a toy, but those who know understand that an MX-5 is actually a race car for the street. You learn how to steer, how weight shifts, and 50/50 weight distribution is rare, especially with low weight, a front-engine, and rear-wheel drive. With semi-slicks, upgraded suspension, and brakes, you’re faster than M5s. Of course, it’s not about power or 0-100 times, but a product so well thought out for those looking for a real car doesn’t need to be searched for any further. You can channel your inner Keiichi Tsuchiya or the new Max Verstappen, and the best part is it won’t let you down because they’re just as reliable as a Honda. One issue, once you have one getting a other or second car becomes very hard, because you always compare it to the mx5... Pretty sure it's going to be a Mazda3.

I own a 2006 NC1... honestly I love it. NC gets a lot of hate but was the first with the 2.0L engine, sharper handling with upgraded suspension, and a stiffer chassis, all while keeping that lightweight, tossable Miata feel. Plus, it’s the first to offer the power retractable hardtop, so you get the best of both worlds-open-top fun and hardtop practicality. It’s also got great tuning potential, with tons of aftermarket support. It's not the best choice for the track because of the added weight but has been my favorite to drive.

As a long-time ND1 RF owner, I have a couple of insights. The hard top really does make the car feel less floppy, so I highly recommend it if you can afford it. Plus, you know, just look at it. I also recommend the Bilsteins (or an aftermarket) over the standard suspension. The body roll is not egregious and you can get used to it, but it was a lot more than I was expecting. There is no cabin air filter but there is an aftermarket one you can install. Kind of a pain to install and replace, but it does make a difference. GET A SET OF WINTER TIRES IF YOU ARE GOING TO DRIVE IN TEMPERATURES LESS THAN 40°F (5°C). I daily drive mine and have no problem whatsoever, but I'm only 5'9” and still have good knees, back, etc.

M-iata I-s A-lways T-he A-nswer You can get drop in LS kits for Miatas. The LS only adds about 200 lbs, and because you have to swap the trans and rear end, it actually keeps the 50/50 balance of the car (assuming you get an aluminum block LS). So 350HP minimum with an LS1, and up to 505 with an LS7 (good luck finding one though) makes the Miata a serious performer.

Alex, PLEASE take out a CX-30 or a 3 Turbo ... I'd love to hear what you have to say about either as I find we have very similar pros and cons with most of the cars you (and I) drive (I test-drive vehicles for a living, but only certain brands, not including Mazda). I also love that fact that we have the same body builds, so I know exactly how things will 'fit' when you show off a vehicle.

Just wanna add something as an ND1 owner. A few times, Alex mentions the 2.0L engine is the "minimum viable package", and I absolutely disagree. As he said, the car's not here for straight line drag race, it exists to be fun in corners, on smaller roads, and to that effect, the 1.5L, 130ish HP engine is just perfect. It does have the kick of the 2.0L, but it's enough, it revs to well over 7000rpm and lets you get a superbe car for quite a bit cheaper than the more powerful version. Also, as a single dude (loser is the technical term), it's daily drivable 95% of the time, and I would hate to not have bought that car just for that 5% of the time when I'd need extra seat or trunk space.
