Over the last few years we've had director-led films like Joker, The Batman and the Snyder Cut of Justice League that are more dynamically shot, scored and acted than anything the MCU has churned out lately, perhaps ever. I liked No Way Home a lot but let's be honest, it was very reliant on nostalgia. Yeah the clueless execs at Warner Bros have mishandled the DCEU terribly and made some awful decisions, but at least you're more likely to be surprised and left with a lasting impression with DC than Marvel.

I feel like annother big contributor to the whole thing is the stakes. Back when it was just the city of New York or the survival of some citizens the stakes feel grounded and real. With the whole “saving the world” thing being thrust in every single film, nothing feels notable and the tension is immediately gone. With invincible however, the stakes are real as it is established throughout the series that heroes can’t save everyone. And by having spent time with the one civilian Mark hurt, people aren’t just faceless casualties. This is also shown pretty well in The Boys, since avenging a dead girlfriend and having the villains being powerful people that abuse their power feel far more real than anything marvel has pumped out as of late. So yeah, grounded stakes good.

An interesting point people were bringing up is something called “investment cost”. How much time and effort is it going to take to be able to catch up to the MCU and follow it with everyone else. For a new fan coming into the MCU from the first Avengers, all they had to watch was the first two Iron Mans, Captain America, Hulk and Thor. For a new fan to the MCU they have roughly 23 movies to watch with about seven or eight tv shows to get to the same level as a legacy viewer. That’s going to be a huge haemorrhage when new viewers don’t watch and let’s face it, the Marvel movies are incredibly formulaic unlike Star Wars where at least each one was different. Having to watch the shows is a damn lie from the MCU for the sake of money. They used to have Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter and Inhumans but now they dont matter. Netflix made their Marvel shows that did really well but the MCU wiped those out but still dangle them in front of those shows fans while disregarding the shows in their universe. There are shows that are supposed to be connected that no one saw like Hit Monkey, MODOK, Cloak and Dagger and they don't matter at all. The Disney Plus shows barely have any connection via their characters but almost none in regards to story. The next shows to be released include Spider-Man Freshman Year which shows Peter dealing with Dr. Octopus, Scorpion, Chameleon, Norman Osborne taking him on as a mentor figure just like Tony Stark did but before he did. All that is supposed to be canon now when it never happened before and that makes no damn sense. The movies have become just as vapid and worthless with Phase 4 having almost as many movies as Phases 1 and 2 combined but it all seems so aimless.

I've been burned out for a while, and I was a comic geek growing up. It's just too much. I don't want to have to watch 30 movies and 10 TV shows to get everything going on. This is why Joker and logan to some extent was refreshing even though it was still part of a franchise it felt like it's own thing and they tried to do something different with it. I'm not necessarily over superhero movies i'm just over the exact same ones in these giant franchises with the same formulas. I want to see more smaller superhero movies where indies can be creative like chronicle. Giant hollywood studios are way too afraid of stepping into unknown territory at the risk of maybe losing money, they find what works and then over the course of 20 years they drive it into the ground, same shit happens with video games (ubisoft being the most obvious example).
@vgaportauthority9932

" I want unique stories...not the same thing rehashed over and over and over again." Tough shit, cause we've had the same shit rehashed over and over since the mid 90s. It's not really a super hero thing, it's just how movies are made. Once you know the formula it is extremely hard to enjoy movies afterwards... It's like how knowing a good bit about music makes most pop music damn near unlistenable.... It's the same shit over and over.. Same chords, same damn arpeggios and progressions. Hell, most of it is white keys only these days, cause why learn anything but Am and C? The movie formula was perfected before 2000, and that's why everything after 2000 is just remakes and knockoffs. The only new thing to actually happen to movies after the 90s were high quality super hero movies. Now that's been run into the ground because innovation is hard. Once super hero movies go away, what we'll be left with are more stories you've heard a million times told according to the allmighty formula. Event - bad turn - victory for ever. 3 chapters, same story, mostly the same actors over and over.. Movies kinda suck.

This is exactly why I felt like The Batman was such an enjoyable movie. It broke out of the typical superhero movie formula that marvel has been recycling since Endgame (which is sad considering Moon Knight had a lot of potential before it was ruined). It was a very grounded movie with slow pacing that fit with the plot, and it still didn't compromise on humour with scenes like Penguin's interrogation by Batman and Gordon. Even characters that people found funny, like Paul Dano's Riddler, still felt menacing and demented and the humour didn't take away from them or make them silly in any way. I was really hoping Love and Thunder would have a similar vibe and pacing, with an almost serial killer-like feel, having Thor (and company) investigate a series of god-killings trying to track down Gorr while being under the threat of getting killed himself, forcing him to be wary and more mature. Instead we got Gorr the Child Kidnapper and a bunch of mid-2000s movie humour. Such a waste of potential (and Christian Bale).

Comparing dc to marvel, or expecting the later to make movies with the same level of darkness and depth as the former is asking a bit much. While the later dc stuff has been a little brighter and the marvel stuff has attempted something a little darker, nether can pull off what the other does. It’s like going to a restaurant with only steak on the menu. The steak is good and you like steak so you come in frequently But eventually you get tired of eating the same thing and want something else. You look around and see that because of how popular the steak is, other restaurants are also switching to making steak. Also because the cooks know you’re already addicted to steak they’ve started putting in less effort and taking shortcuts in making the steak so it doesn’t even taste as good. So there you are left with only steak and realizing you’re slowly starting to hate it.

I truly believe that being bought by Disney has imbued Marvel with a "too big to fail" attitude that has caused them to take the audience they had at their peak for granted; like, why should THEY have to apologize for pushing out a mediocre product? I hope that Matt Reeves's "The Batman" really made a lot of people at Marvel question their marriage to the MCU. That movie is the type of movie that Marvel simply cannot make anymore. The MCU bars them from ever truly experimenting with their properties

This is why Logan was my favorite marvel movie, it was a bleek ending to wolverines story, however it shows the consequences of having his powers and the raw emotions of seeing his friends die because they are associated with him. It is also great how there was references to the old comic books and how only about a quarter of it happened and the rest was made up. There was also old western cowboy movie references in the film to show that superhero movies much like westerns are a fad that will inevitably die out like those shows did.
