Both actors do a wonderful job portraying the duality of the situation across their faces. Ringo is completely confident when he thinks he's up against Earp, then shows fear when he sees Holliday. By the time he changes to "Alright. Let's do this, lunger.", he's psyched himself up into thinking that maybe, just maybe he can win and be the guy that killed Doc Holliday. On the other hand, you have Doc Holliday. He's completely confident that he can take Ringo, but in the back of his mind he's hoping that maybe, just maybe Ringo is good enough to kill him and spare him an agonizing, humiliating death by tuberculosis. Hence his anger and the "You're no daisy!" taunts when he wins. A part of him actually WANTED Ringo to win.

Tombstone went unnoticed at the Academy Awards. But as for Val, remember that other performances matter too. The Best Supporting Actor award went to Tommy Lee Jones for the Fugitive. That was also a great performance and I bet nearly everyone who enjoyed Tombstone enjoyed the Fugitive. John Malkovich was also nominated for In the Line of Fire, another great action flick with a great supporting actor performance. I think it was just a great year for actors taking roles in action movies seriously and turning out some great work in movies we’ve all watched over and over.

I think one of the reasons he was as good as he was, is because he knew he was going to die soon. That allowed him to fully commit to "the job" , so to speak. I believe the underlying story that many missed here is Doc's own death wish. He alluded to dying on his feet, not in a bed without his boots earlier in the movie. He'd also just left Big Nosed Kate for the vendetta ride and really had nothing left by that point. I think he was hoping that Johnny would get a shot off and kill him too. That way he could die an honorable death as a gunfighter while knowing he had saved Wyatt's life in the process. Hence the, "COME ON JOHNNY, COME ON!!!" He was egging Johnny Ringo on hoping he had enough left in him to finish him off too. When he realized Johnny lost his motor control, and wouldn't get it done, he starts taunting him by saying, "You're no daisy, you're no daisy 't'all." It's Doc's way of reminding Johnny that he was not the revered gunslinger he boasted about and was ultimately a disappointment to Doc. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's how I saw the scene.
@MartinTraXAA

+hoydie17 People also often miss that what Doc says after Ringo falls over and dies is refering to the theory that Ringo committed suicide in reality.
@hoydie17
8 жыл бұрын
+Maraak .Nor Agreed, and in reailty, experts say that's how Ringo died anyways. His boots were found upside down in the stirrups to his saddle which was a common practice in those days to keep scorpions out of them while the owner slept. It's basically surmised that by that point in time, most of Ringo's friends were dead or had deserted him and he sank into a deep depression and shot himself in a drunken stupor. Official records show that Doc Holliday was in Colorado only two days prior to Ringo's presumed death, and wouldn't have had enough time to get west in order to have been there to kill him. Doc purportedly boasted about having killed Ringo, but could provide no proof that he had done so.

+hoydie17 One line of thought, (not saying it's true, only what some have speculated,) is Ringo was shot by a rifle from a long distance, one way Wyatt was known to kill. Doc Holliday's grave is in Glenwood Springs Colorado. He was told the springs helped Tuberculous. You can visit his grave, but it's been the subject of debate as to the exact location of the actual grave. It's s good hike, but take a lot of water because of the altitude.

@Jon Baldassari - “Huckleberry” was commonly used in the 1800′s in conjunction with “persimmon” as a small unit of measure. “I’m a huckleberry over your persimmon” meant “I’m just a bit better than you.” As a result, “huckleberry” came to denote idiomatically two things. First, it denoted a small unit of measure, a “tad,” as it were, and a person who was a huckleberry could be a small, unimportant person-usually expressed ironically in mock self-depreciation. The second and more common usage came to mean, in the words of the “Dictionary of American Slang: Second Supplemented Edition” (Crowell, 1975): “A man; specif., the exact kind of man needed for a particular purpose. 1936: “Well, I’m your huckleberry, Mr. Haney.” Tully, “Bruiser,” 37. Since 1880, archaic. The “Historical Dictionary of American Slang” which is a multivolume work, has about a third of a column of citations documenting this meaning all through the latter 19th century. So “I’m your huckleberry” means “I’m just the man you’re looking for!”
@janreznak881
7 жыл бұрын
Only problem is, he says "huckle bearer". You can hear it clearly when you listen for it. And, as others have said, a huckle bearer is an old term for a pall bearer. In the latin scene, Doc tells Ringo he'll make him rest in peace, so it fits.
@1bloodfrenzy

In the old Georgia (where Doc Holiday originated) the men who would bear (carry) your coffin in a funeral procession wore small huckleberry branches in their lapels. Like so many people we could recite the best lines ,especially Doc's, by the third show. For Val Kilmer, Michael Biehn and the rest of the cast, I think this was one of the best roles if not the best for so many of these actors. The movie Toumbstone is just one of those events that only happens every 50 or 100 years or so. I love this seen, don't get me wrong, but you have to give honorable mentions to Tom Selleck in Quigley Down Under "said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it!!!". Also, John Wayne in True Grit, "Fill your hands you son of a *****!!!"

Yes, this was great but, you gotta consider a couple scenes from "Once Upon a Time in the West" ...the opening "you brought two too many" scene and the final gunfight between Harmonica and Frank.

the first time i saw this i wasn't sure if doc was a good guy or bad guy. i was too young to understand a man with a death wish, but he was loyal to the end; the best of friends. val's portrayal of a dying man's cheerful melancholy gave me a deeper understanding of human psyche, and for that i'll be ever thankful (and he hsould've been nominated!)

Everything about the draw is just so cool. The finger tapping on the hilt, the way he holsters his gun immediately after firing one shot (cause he knew it was over), to never putting down his cigarette. So slick and just exudes confidence.

The expression "I'm your huckleberry" spoken by Doc means "I'm the perfect man for the job." It is not a reference to Mark Twain's Huck Finn, as that book was published in 1885 and this movie takes place in 1881.
@howardwhite1507

ok, don't get into any debates... you are not up to it... When Twain wrote Huck Finn, he would have been using established slang, so close enough... the movie wasn't written in 1881, that's just the setting... if you think Hollywood is that precise, well.... you should quit while you are behind...

@blankerism4189

you noticed the difference too in the barrel length? my father pointed that out when I was a teenager. If mind serves me right, earlier in the film, he shows off his dual pistols. One had longer and the other had shorter barrel. In this case, the shorter barrel and position of where he had the pistol holster allowed for quicker draw at a close range shot.

EXEJON Not at all uncommon in a quick draw duel like that where life and death can come down to thousandths of a second. There are still trick shots that keep this art form alive. They can hit a bullseye at ten yards faster than you can blink. They're just in once place, a bang occurs and they are in a different position. And they train to shoot like that - the holster actually stabilizes the frame of the pistol. Amazing skill.

I can honestly say that I like Michael Biehns performance in this film as much or more then Val Kilmer's. It was very cool to see him take a break from the soldier role which had nearly typecast him by this point, and play an arrogant & self-assured, heavy drinking outlaw.

He has a low-vibe cockiness because he was very confident. His way of doing little things and saying little things had a psychological effect on his opponents. The confidence he exudes completely makes his opponents unnerved, and they then begin to have thoughts creeping in on if their own abilities going to be good enough
@Euripides_Panz

k max Holliday was studying Ringo's timing and moves in their previous meetings. As Ringo kept going on about foolin' and not having a fight with him, Kilmer's expression went from taunt to cool, absolute confidence. He knew Ringo was rattled and was ready for a reckoning.

In the old Georgia (where Doc Holiday originated) the men who would bear (carry) your coffin in a funeral procession wore small huckleberry branches in their lapels. They became know as the “Huckle Bearers”. When Doc says “I’m your huckleberry” he means that he is your coffin bearer….. or more to the point… he will be the one to PUT you in your coffin.

Eastwood mowing down a whole bar in Unforgiven was a better scene, in my opinion. I mean, i wouldn't show a movie like this to a little girl, but the toughest tough guy battles always happen in the rain, or in the dark, and they last more than 5 seconds. This is really vicious, though, the way that cop shoots the son of a bitch through his neck, so he'll suffer. He's no daisy at all yeehaw!
