Not sure if you take content suggestions but can you try using “solar wire mesh” to make a moss pole on your channel? It appears to be the exact same thing as the wire hardcloth mesh that you’re using but it comes in a roll already cut 8 inches wide. It’s used to keep birds out of solar panels on roofs. I am really interested in your opinion and to see if it would work better or if it’s just easier. You can also try using a thing called c ring (sometimes called hog ring) pliers instead of zip ties. Thanks!

I live in New Orleans and any time the weather drops below 45-50* I cover my plants with a sheet or frost clothes, usually just in the evenings and over night. Once the sun comes up, I remove them. The only time I keep them covered during the day is if frost hits or it’s under 40*

Hello Melissa. I just happened upon your channel. What caught my attention was having so many moss poles! I use moss poles also for some of my plants. I have enjoyed watching this video and the 31 moss pole video! 🥰🪴 I’m in Colorado. I’ll be bringing plants inside probably in the next 2-3 weeks. I keep all my Tropicals inside. All my succulents and cactus are outside.

Melissa, another good video. Could I ask a couple of questions about the two props: 1. When "last year" did you chop each (roots grew like that in 9 mos or ??) and 2. Were they in your IKEA cabinet the entire time?? Trying to learn how to be fearless, chopping and propping, like you!
@plantsbymelissa
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Sure! I chopped them up (majestic was one vine and cut into 3 - a top cut, mid and bottom cut) and I cut off the rotted roots so all of this has been the regrowth. I definitely can be lazy to pot up propagations sometimes but I tend to just sit and forget about them while they work on regrowing. I had them in my cabinet the whole time and just wet the moss when it starts getting dry. The Serpens was a top cut and a bottom cut.

I have a birkin! It doesn’t grow that fast for me but I really should give it more light. It’s a “self header” so it doesn’t need a moss pole. I have a stake for support in mine. It caught spider mites several months ago when I had them so I ended up chopping the top off 😅 but it’s regrowing. I would recommend a chunky mix and light! They can revert back to a rojo congo 🙃

I'm thinking there are 2 factors for the timing of switching to moss poles. One is the stress of the move, and the other is the time waiting for the plant to start climbing. For the stress, I'd think of it as just a repotting. If you think the little plants would undergo too much stress for a repot, I'd probably avoid the moss pole. If the plants were a new purchase, they're probably already quite stressed from the transition to your home, so it may be advisable to delay the pole. Once the plants are used to your environment and become a little more established, they'll probably do better switching over. More roots and leaves allow for quicker recovery. Then for the climb, the quicker your plants get used to the pole switch, the sooner they'll be ready to start growing up the pole. I think the key here is the root system. If the roots are undersized for the moss pole pot, you may spend a while waiting for those to fill out. Smaller roots could also struggle more with the stress, potentially delaying the climb further. There may also be additional maintenance required like keeping the moss moist to encourage aerial roots to attach. There may be a third factor if moss poles are a new thing for you. Some experimentation may be involved with getting the moss pole going which could allow for a greater chance of something going wrong with a plant. Different species react to changes a bit differently. Some could adapt quite ready without problems and do just fine with a more immediate switch. If you're not sure about the plants you have, I'd say it's safer to allow the roots and a couple leaves to develop more, then make the switch. If you're feeling adventurous or curious and the potential of the plant dying isn't too costly, it may be worth just giving it a go and see what happens. I have a tendency to take that approach. If I was a cat, 9 lives wouldn't be enough!
