As your videos are great for inexperienced solderers, it might be an idea to suggest people who haven’t soldered before solder 2 opposing corner pins of the sockets/chips first, then check they sit flush before doing the rest of the pins. I’m pretty sure you have done this in the past, but it doesn’t hurt to repeat it for new viewers.

I do like the PCB holder you use while soldering, I've got something similar... but I find it much more convenient for small boards like this to simply place the socket and board down on the bench and let gravity hold things together while soldering. I do two opposite corners, inspect the socket to make sure it's lined up properly and flush with the board and solder the rest of the pins. This also allows me to rest my forearms on the bench to allow finer control.

I used that feature once, then totally forgot it existed. Then when I needed to test some ICs I almost ended up making an Arduino-based tester before thinking that maybe the TL866 could do it! Then had flashbacks of me doing it the first time around. But this time I couldn't find the test-window inside the software itself 😆🤦♂️ The icons are not very good in my opinion.

I've been planning to do this at some point, so I'm glad to see it's relatively easy. I've been speculating that a magic cartridge with a zif socket might be the potential new form of a magazine covermount- a one-off purchase of the cartridge, and put an eprom with a game on it on the cover of each issue, instead of a disk or a tape

Man, I still have that game on tape. Great times. Sadly, my C64 power supply is positively bulging like just a little excitement may cause it to blow, and yeah, not risking seeing if it works. The dictionary reminds me of that time I decided to hack English menus into a Japanese only wrestling game(I'm NEVER doing that again; I was a right tech support grump on AIM over it) and that game had 8-bit characters that conformed to ASCII up to 7F, then 80 to 8F acted as 16-bit characters for writing in Japanese corresponding to Shift-JIS, then 90 and upwards were 8-bit common Japanese characters and special use. For instance, there was like 30 variations of the powerbomb, so "Powerbomb" was one of the upper range "characters". Err... I kinda digressed even worse than normal... I did have a point, but it got lost in between remembering and writing that lot...

Don't forget to put a sticky dot or square label over that EPROM window to prevent ambient UV light from gradually erasing the EPROM. Yeah, that does happen. Really slowly, but it does happen. Sure, you can just re-program it, but that's annoying to do when all you wanted to do was to play the game.

I had a lot of fun making Magic Desk cartridges, Marko is a great guy and he adapted his version of the board into a universal design that can be wired to take practically any EPROM. It is possible to fit 30 or more C64 games on a single cartridge, however as you rightly pointed out it has been kind of eclipsed by the Kung Fu Flash and the soaring cost of new flash PROMs.

I've heard that actually. My attitude is that if I test it it's "probably" safe to solder into a board. I bulk buy logic from places like AliExpress becuase it's much cheaper and they can sometimes be remarked chips. I'll definitely bear it in mind, so thank you Sia.
