I finally made my first mockup :D now I don't have an excuse to not make the final dress. I have two questions though. First, the pockets. I had some trouble sewing them in, and looking for pocket tutorial videos did not help, because the pockets that I found did not have the extra fabric on top, but were the same length as the slit in the side seams. When I sewed the pockets in, I had raw edges inside, right at the skirt side seams (where you put your hands in). But maybe that is because I did not sew a lining which would have covered it? I finished the raw edges with bias tape. Second, the waist band. I made it as described, but it came out extremely long, way longer than what I see from your videos. When I tie the bands in a small bow like I see in your video, the ends hang at my calves, not higher than the knees. For the length you write: "waist + 25'', cut 2". Should it maybe just be half of it, or is the measurement correct and maybe I did something wrong in the process? Maybe instead of "cut 2" it should be "cut into 2"?
@Ora_Lin
Жыл бұрын
Hi Johanna, the instructions do not include a finishing method for the side seams so bias tape is a great option. They could also be finished with overlocking. As for the waistband, its quite long so that it can be wrapped around the front if desired but you can absolutely make it shorter if you prefer!
@happytofu5

good question! the lining has all of the extra ease that the outer layer has, so the waistline can stretch enough to pull on over your shoulders!

For my mockup I did not have enough fabric for long sleeves, so I just made them short instead. I made the shoulder part and maybe 15 cm sleeve length. Worked out fine by just cutting it shorter and hemming it there.

This is exactly the kind of dress I would like on my most high fem days. Thank you so much for sharing! Possibly a silly question. Do you think someone could achieve the same amount of stretch and cinching with smocking on the back? it looks like a small ish piece of fabric compared to a shift for example. Do you think there would be enough to try it here with maybe the honeycomb pattern for instance? I'm only asking because I can't do sheering and only have access to hand techniques. I just thought that might be an interesting detail to try since I can't do sheering and it would be prettier than doing a bunch of small elastic casing rows. Just a curious question.
@Ora_Lin
Жыл бұрын
Hi Rainfire! It is possible to do elastic shirring by hand, I did it that way in the original sample (moss green) I used a single elastic thread and an uneven running stitch with shorter length of thread showing on the outside and longer stitches on the inside. This pattern could potentially be altered to work with honeycomb smocking, but as it is the back panel needs to stretch to its full width to put on and takeoff the dress, so you would need to add even more width to the back to account for the fabric taken up by the smocking. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions 💕
@rainfire632
Жыл бұрын
@@Ora_Lin Ah thank you so much! I’ll have to try out that shirring method. It makes sense it could be done by hand. For some reason it didn’t even occur to me. >~< silly brain. That opens up a whole new experiment for me I’m so exited! :] Thank you so much!!!
@Ora_Lin
Жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! I think it’s not some thing people think about much because there’s no element of “historical accuracy“ to it. Elastic shirring was invented after the sewing machine so doing it by hand was never common practice, but it is possible!

I have some trouble figuring out the skirt panels. From where do I start to measure? From my waist? I am not sure if its because I am short, but 25 inch measured from my waist would be very long on me (hitting below my knees). Do I have to recalculate the rectangles from the cutting instructions if I do a shorter length?
@Ora_Lin
Жыл бұрын
yes the measurement is from the natural waist. I'm 152cm or just under 5ft and 25 inches hits a little below the knee for me aswell. If you would prefer a shorter skirt you can reduce the 25" measurement by a few inches no other measurements need to be adjusted. Just remember to include seam allowance on both the top and bottom.
@happytofu5
Жыл бұрын
@@Ora_Lin thanks, but wouldn't the panel measurements be off? If I cut the top from one panel but the bottom of the other? (Since they are positioned top-down-bottom-up on the rectangle.) Or did I misunderstand how the rectangles work?
@Ora_Lin
Жыл бұрын
The width and length measurements are on different axis so one can be adjusted without effecting the other.
