Would love to see a more tuned elo system in the future. One idea is if a fighter is on a downward trajectory (falling out of prime or over 35yo) maybe use derivatives to guess their current (lower) elo, this way if they get beaten by, for example Dricus, Dricus won't gain too many elo and neither would the loser lose too many elo.

The UFC roster watch team also has an elo rating system where they use an initial rating of 2200 and a k factor of 200. In their ranking, islam's current elo rating is the highest amongst the current roster but interestingly, he also has the highest rating of all time including peaks.
@Viewer2715

Great video! this video shows the current level of each fighter which is useful for real time ranking but not useful for the GOAT discussion, for example Anderson Silva is arguably the GOAT but it's not reflected in this ranking because this counts all the losses he took after he exited his prime. For the GOAT debate to be settled you need to rank each fighter according to the peak elo rating they reached. Subscribed! you should make another video ranking fighters according to their peak elo rating to see who's the Greatest Of All Time. Cant wait to see it!
@HPloveCraftsCat1352
10 сағат бұрын
The GOAT discussion rightfully includes any given fighters entire career, you can't just cherry pick one aspect the make it more favorable any fighter of choice, it's on Anderson for not retiring when he should have and his resume suffered as a result, while fighters like Khabib, GSP and Mighty Mouse (and soon to be Jon Jones probably) retired as champions and coming of wins. Talking about a fighters peak it's a different discussion, the GOAT debate takes in *ALL* aspects of a fighters career, highs and lows etc...

Cool video! It would be awesome to see a part 2 with updated logic regarding calculating loss streaks and maybe even dominance in fights. I think the current program is more representative of how good fighters are after their last fight, but not taking loss streaks into account because Jon Jones for example(bad example) might be way worse then he was a few years ago but since his ELO was already so high, it'll take a while for his ELO to represent his falloff.

Alex peirera beating adesanya is way more impressive than rodriges beating zellhuber. Even they both had similair betting lines:)

The thing specifically with measuring the greatest fighter of all time based on Elo is that almost all of the greats hang on a little too long and rack up a few losses late in their careers that drop their overall Stat rating. I think that’s why the top ten list is so skewed toward current fighters. The peak Elo would be a great measuring stick, but is there also a way to compare like their highest average peak Elo over a 5-10 fight span? That way maybe you could compare guys during their peak but over a longer time span as opposed to their absolute peak. Great video though, thanks for all the hard work!

Another problem with the system is that sometimes we only recognize how good an up-and-coming prospect is in retrospect. For instance, the TJ that fight Barao is probably one of the greatest bantamweights we have ever seen. However, because TJ had not faced very high level competition up to that point, he would have been assigned a relatively low ELO at the time.
@dinobot7025
20 сағат бұрын
Only major downside is starting every new UFC fighter with 1000 elo. This means a guy like Dan Henderson, who beat legendary fighters and was Pride champ when he moved to the UFC, has the same debuting elo as some 6-0 guy who comes off the contender series. It also means that guys like Robbie Lawler or Werdum who left the UFC, got some great wins, then came back to the UFC won't have those wins reflected in their elo when they return. However, I understand integrating strength of competition outside the UFC would be very hard to do (especially because those promotions don't share their data) so you are doing the best with what you have. Also this only really matters for past eras of mma where competition outside the UFC was actually somewhat equal.

I've always thought the UFC should use an elo system for rankings. They could modify their algorithm to take in so many different stats and calculations too - it could be whatever they want it to be. A simple chess elo system is probably too simple, but with enough different metrics to weigh (luckily the UFC already tracks a lot of stats) you could probably make something really effective. It would just be nice for the rankings to not be completely arbitrary.
@eduardunus
