I've only been sewing since lockdown, but I've managed to work with cotton, wool and silk. I'm in love with wool. A few months back I actually scored a whole bunch of yardage at the local Value Village. Let the mock-ups begin. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi (she/her)

I really like this historybound, it's a great layering piece! I was thinking that you could wear your pirate shirt under it, for a fluffy linen confection!

That's a pretty cool idea, fusing different historical eras to create a new design. Thanks for explaining all the historical inspirations :)

That is a beautiful bit of history bounding. Well done. It's amazing that you can trace your family back that far into history. With Scottish families, if you are Extremely lucky (I'm assuming records were burnt after the Culloden massacre) you can reach as far back as the 1700's. Then you hit the local Vicars. Who knew everyone so the surviving records show something along the lines of "Wee Jimmy with the limp married to Jane with the hair lip"... Honestly, I can't even... Augh! You realize you could do a whole second video for how you went about drafting and doing the mock-ups for this project? Just spitballing... I just found a small herd of unicorns - otherwise known as plus size vintage patterns from the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Thank you ebay algorithmic thing-y's. So I'm going to be bouncing about in the mid 20th century for a while. I was killing myself trying to draft everything from scratch, so I figured I'd shop therapy myself some short-cuts while they're still semi-affordable. I'm at the 'excited but nervous to start' phase... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

oof yeah genealogy can be really difficult. I know that there are 12 ish generations of my family recorded in Taiwan and a little bit from by grandmothers side from China but honestly the rest is a bit of a guess based on what I know about history and DNA testing... Have fun with the vintage patterns! forcing yourself to draft everything is super tiring and defilingly not necessary. Don't get me wrong I love drafting and think its a super useful skill, but that doesn't mean you have to practice it on every single project. happy sewing! Ora

I love taking historical inspiration to design something new! Your videos really make me want to try working with linen, but right now I have bamboo-based fabric that I'm excited to start working with ☆

What a sweet, elegant piece! I'm inspired not merely by your talents but by the mindfulness you bring to your designs. My family have been in Canada for so long (14 generations) that it would take some work to identify a specific place and style from my own heritage to fuse with my favourite era, which is the Edwardian period, but I'd like to research and play with the clothing of my Ulster Scots folk, or perhaps what my working-class ancestors wore when they came here to Turtle Island. Or not - for example, one does not simply walk around in Hudson's Bay blanket stripes! Education and intent are so important when it comes to borrowing from history.

looove this. I love the adapting of historical garments for today. especially since people of the past had sustainability in mind due to the higher cost of cloth and were trying to make garments that fit with the local climate instead of for air conditioning/central heating.

Such a pretty top! I also want to start making history bound Chinese clothing! Would you mind sharing some resources if you can? There seem to be very little on youtube (I'm Chinese descent living overseas and find it annoying sometimes to navigate Chinese websites, if I dare be so picky...) Also you have a very nice voice!!

The top is so cute. There are times when I wish I could wear styles like that. My body type is not conducive to wearing that type of style. 'sigh' Plus this particular garment is from an ethnic community I would not feel comfortable wearing. My ethnicity is totally British with some French, Dutch, and Danish thrown in for good measure. Plus, to me, it would be cultural appropriation. As far as mixing clothing styles from different eras, wearing modern clothes basically does that. Pick something from one era and something else from another era or two, throw it in a blender and see what comes out. That, to me, is modern style clothing. And Fast Fashion makes it all cookie cutter - everybody looks the same. One reason I like making my own clothes, though I haven't been able to do much of that lately. High time I got my sewejo back. Oh, and my favorite fiber is linen. It's just 'sigh' wonderful.

LOVE this top. Loved learning the history ! I'ld say my favorite would be Edwardian men's wear mixed with modern men's wear. (Though I identify as a woman, I am not a fan of skirts & dresses !) As a kid, I had a motto, "if you can't climb a tree in it, why wear it?!" I try to honor this as an adult. I am 59 years old, so, I was a "Tom Boy" as a kid. Girls could dress like boys, but sadly, boys could never do the reverse! So glad kids have less of that crap to deal with now ! (Though it still is HARD!!!)

I'm not 600 years old but I think it's safe to assume that Ming dynasty China had a very different set of beauty standards. I wanted to challenge our twenty first century ideas on form and silhouette with this piece and it seems I've done it based on your comment

@@Ora_Lin I like Ming dynasty clothing, it just looks like you chopped the top of the dress off and wore it. It feels it should be longer or have more layers to it.
