Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by! I was asked to make a wood base for this sculpture. This piece of art was crafted circa 1960/70’s by Willie Daro. It was probably originally a base for a table with a glass top. It is being repurposed as a center piece for an entry table.
Daro was born in Belgium in 1918 and became very popular through out the 60’s and 70’s for his lighting and furniture designs that were inspired by nature. His pieces are now collectable and prized by their owners.
I made the base from 8/4 Cherry and added some feet to the bottom as well. I used General Finishes Brown Mahagony stain, toned it with Mohawk Perfect Brown and finished it with GF satin Arm-R-Seal.
I had some trouble with the flush trim router bit on the table and received a good tip from a more experienced woodworker and he suggest next time using my handheld router on the big flush trim bit, he had experienced the same tear out I did and said the handheld is the way to go. I put a ton of hand sanding on this one, but worth it in the end. Thanks for watching.
