Hi. Im a chef from Germany and i have like 30 waterstones (shapton, naniwa, sigma etc.) and 8 diamond stones from Dmt and Atoma. Saw this Stone but the Amazon reviews where not so good. A few month ago, I decided to purchase this stone to left it in the Kitchen at work, and I can confirm everything you said. The Atoma is equaly consistent and for me sharpening a little bit better, but I dont like the feeling. Dmt has some very big particles, for me the feeling and shatpness is also a bit better, but they grain size is much more uniform on the sharpal. So you get a perfectly flat, very good feeling, uniformely coated Diamond stone in two absolutely perfect grit sizes in a very very nice Box. The Box alone makes me so happy, because it realy perfectly fits, and finaly doesnˋt slip. For this money I cant recommend it enough, and i'm happy, that i didn't believed the Amazon reviews. Before my recommendation for professional chefs (not sushi masters:-)) was a shapton professional 1000 and Nanowa Chosera 2000, now its this stone, for even better finish the Chosera 2000 is still awsome for stainless kitchen knives. Greetings to everyone from Hamburg/Germany. Tim

We have been selling these stones at the local Woodcraft I work at for a couple years. I've sold dozens of them and absolutely zero problems. It's nice to see someone else acknowledge the quality of these stones. They are better by far than Trend and better by a not insignificant amount than DMT, which is saying a lot as DMT makes great stones. I have been using four of these in my sharpening class for two years and have yet to even begin wearing one out. It's always the first diamond stone I recommend for someone starting out. or someone who just wants a great stone. We have problems keeping them in stock as they sell pretty much as soon as they come in. What you found with your one stone believe me translates to all of them. Sharpal recently came out with a 4" by 10" diamond flattening plate for waterstones that I have yet to try out, but expect it to be amazing. Don't know how they do it for the price, but I hope they keep it up.

Okay, after rolling this around in my head for the last for months I broke down and ordered the Sharpal today!😂 Your recommendation for the S SATC was spot on so I figured it was safe to try this one as well. 🙌 Generally I have not been a big fan of diamonds for anything but flattening water stones and occasionally reprofiling a very dull or damaged edge, but the diamond plates do have a lot going for them. My go-to plates for the last ten or fifteen years have been the Atomas (especially the 140) but the S SATC has been great for tucking into my knife roll to keep the house knives at work usable. Thanks for bringing us these sweet finds that we never would have otherwise known about!😎

Love your videos you are the first person that I have seen that has a very simple way to sharpen with a traditional wet stone. All the other videos I saw here didn't explain it well enough for me and expected you to be ambidextrous which I am at a lot of things (I was left handed until I was 4 but my 5 yr old sister told me to write with my write hand😂) but knife sharpening I am not. Your videos are very informative on knife sharpening and I now can sharpen anything with almost any abrasive although I do struggle with the tips of knives at 4.25"- 4.5" but not really anything larger. Because I have learned so much from your videos on the qualities of stone I know what my short comming are and can compensate for it. Despite not getting diamond compound or a better strop that's not totally contaminate free, i have gotten hair whittling sharp. Not perfect and not totally through out the blade but I am miles ahead of any one else I know. I have been able to find enjoyment from being able to get such nice edge on a knife very quickly and confidently instead of just struggling, failing then getting a new knife because I didn't know how to sharpen well. And I too like monkeys from Florida they're hilarious. Thanks for your videos, I find your humor funny, your instructions informative and your shots insane but totally useful to understand what is happening when you sharpen.

I have been using this diamond stone for over a year and a half now. I absolutely agree with everything you say! I think I only paid £50 for mine on some sort of special deal. So in all that time I’ve had just about everything you can imagine across it, and it’s not disappointed me once. I also felt that it wasn’t overloaded like some others, where you get that ultra coarse feeling as it beds in. I don’t know if you felt that too? It’s still feels just as good now, and it’s still producing the results as it always has. So I would highly recommend it to anyone! It’ll be good to see if you get the same life out of your one, as you will probably use it much more than me, but I do use mine at least twice a week, if not more. I hope this helps others out, but seriously, just buy one!

Bought one of these stones a week ago (finally back in stock). First diamond stone for me and was purchased solely because of this review that I respect. Very amateur sharpener here, BTW. I finally had a stone big/aggressive enough to sharpen my block plane, and I also changed the angle of my Ka-Bar pocket knife from 22.5 to 20 degrees (AUS 8A Stainless Steel). Both went really quick, and had a nice clean shaving-sharp edge off the 1200 side. The included "training wheels" angle guide was a great touch, and stows well in the carrying case. Hair-whittling sharp will have to wait until I can re-dress my tired chromium oxide-laden strop with some diamond paste. Overall very happy with the stone.

If that is the Lansky fixed-angle (aka guided) sharpening system you have then the only problem I can think of is if you are not spending enough time on the lower grits to fully apex the edge. Try marking the entire edge with a sharpie. Continue sharpening with a coarse grit until the sharpie is ground off all of the way to the apex of the edge.

You should consider testing something which science of sharp once remarked upon: Coarse diamond stones (about 300 grit) appear to give a smoother finish (finer edge) than the fine diamond stones. He hypothesized that this was due to the fact that when you reduce the pressure on a coarse stone, the grits no longer dig very deep into the steel, and so with low pressure it - counter intuitively - abrades steel more gently than a finer stone which will have the grits digging into the steel even with low pressure. He said finishing on 300 grit gave a better shaving experience than finishing on 1000 grit, and provided electron microscope pictures to back it up. I'd love to see someone else replicate his experiment.

I bought a Sharpal Buddyguard and the 1200 grit side had one larger diamond crystal that would catch the knife edge and dull it as fast as it sharpened. I looked under a microscope and located and marked its position, the took the corner of a file and a small hammer and knocked it off. Since then, it has performed flawlessly.

I tried a setup with this stone. A 6 micron and 1 micron lether strap. And got my 5€ wood carving knife that I bought 15 years ago in my childhood to just below razor sharp. Mind, I got no experience in sharpening, and this was my first attempt at it. I have just been watching your videos and am super happy with the results. Now to the practice to get to hair witteling sharp. You make amazing videos and love the actual more scientific approach with the microscopes. Hope you keep up the great content and have a great day. ^w^

I read some reviews on this one on Amazon. It seems the diamonds are flaking off for some people, like it was glued on as a single sheet instead of being directly electroplated onto the substrate steel. That may be the magic to avoid grit contamination - avoid electroplating completely.

In the comments here people are saying they've used it for a few years without issues. If I had diamonds flaking off, I'd ask for a return. Seems more like an occasional flaw if it does happen. It'd also have to be some damn fancy glue to hold the diamonds on after multiple sharpening without ruining the surface of the stone - and to not show on the microscope.

@@uponeric36 Vast majority of reviews on Amazon are also positive. I always read the 3/2 star reviews for the real deets. The glue is not attaching individual diamonds. It's entire sheets glued on from the pictures in the reviews I saw. Then edges of the sheets start peeling off.

Just read reviews as well and was also confused, many people claiming it works amazing and some people with terrible results. Some people might have made mistakes like using water. But looking at some of the pictures it almost seems like they received a cheap knock-off? Or are they fake reviews by the competition?
@uponeric36

@@Kumpelkefer It's possible people could be getting fakes. Tbh it depends on the amazon shipping process. You'd hope it's coming straight from the manufacture SHARPAL INC, but if it ever takes a stop in an amazon warehouse, that's when there's potential for fakes to get mixed in with the real products. With AI, it would be crazy but possible - you could totally AI generate negative reviews so long as you could get a human to post them. (amazon likely has botting protections) Scary times.

I got my Sharpal delivered to me in Australia for the same price as you paid (that is unusual!) about two years ago. I've been delighted with it. It is so flat that I can even use it for stoning my mill's table.

I've had one of these for about a year now and I love it. Coupled with their strop block, but using DMT diamond paste instead of the compound it comes with, my knives have never been so scary sharp.

I bought this exact stone exactly 4 years ago & at the time I had no idea how to sharpen. So I ruined the fine side by trying to reprofile using it, haha. But the coarse side I still use to this day & it's held up great! I can attest this is a fantastic stone!

It's weirdly entertaining to see an expert so flabbergasted by a discovery like this. It's like a scientist running into an event that completely upends decades of accumulated knowledge about what is considered to be a well-known fact. At $70 I can't think of a reason to not give the stone a shot, so I will. Thank you for the video!

This is by far the greatest recommendation ever. I've been following you for years, and I wasn't hesitant about purchasing this stone. Your guides are straight to the point, no nonsense with a ton of facts and knowledge packed into every video. I have never been able to sharpen a knife as fast as I did yesterday with this stone and the strop that came with it. My only question is, should I be wearing a respirator and glasses? I made a shii ton of dust

Hello my friend. I bought this stone thanks to your recommendation. The manufacturers instructions say that we can use honing oil for this stone. Honing stone is just mineral oil USP grade which is suitable for knives. I just use 4 drops distributed on each side of the stone and wow i liked the results so much. Without oil just plain dry, it is so dusty and messy, with oil is a whole different thing. You should try it. Dont use so much, just 4 drops of mineral oil USP grade or any honing oil (but it is more expensive). I think the stone with oil it is easier to clean with just tap water (not soap because it will remove the oil), just plain water and a clean dry rag but not rubbing just tapping with the rag on side and the stone looks better than brand new. Also i liked it because in salty or wet environments, the oil helps the stone to protect against rust. try it out and let me know what are your thoughts on it.

Used this for the first time today and damn is it effective! Less than 5 minutes to go from a knife that squishes tomatoes into pulp to one that makes see through slices.
