The most fun memorization project for me was learning to write each of the 2,200 basic Japanese kanji characters, prompted by the keywords used by James Heisig. Since most kanji consists of smaller components, we first learn or develop names for these components, such as “thread” (or “Spider-Man”) and “cell phone / walkie talkie”. We then invent a story that combines them into the new kanji, given by a new keyword (such as “entwine”) that reflects the kanji’s meaning. For example: It was bound to happen. _Spider-Man_ was web-slinging his way down Broadway, gabbing on his _cell phone,_ not watching where he was going, and became ENTWINED in his own webbing around a lamppost.

One night when I was bored at my night-shift factory job, I made a game out of singing the digits of pi to the tune of "Camptown Ladies" for... some... reason. That was nearly 20 years ago, and I have to sing them but I still remember pi to about 30 digits. In conclusion, I'm sad I'm not near Toronto.

There are so many great things to memorize in this world, so many things. We have the number e, a very unique and underrated number. We have the periodic table with a rich history and cool names. We have prime numbers. We have powers of 2 and 3 and 4 and 5. But what did you choose to memorize? Pi, an overrated, boring number. Every time someone memorizes a new digit of Pi, we take one step closer to the apocalypse. Heed my warning.
