They lay it down and freeze water OVER it. They defrosted the overlaying ice then used the strings to get the edges freed up. Then removed all the water and ice that had been ON TOP of the signage. This way they can quickly lay it and remove it.

The design is “frozen” under sheets of ice. They raise the temp of the underpayment (typically a metal plate) to melt the ice, so they can retrieve the design paper. The paper is typically more of a plastic or latex sheet they cover in water, and chill the metal plate underneath.

The rink is a combination of plastic sheets with the logos on it, the stripes of color and paint for the rest of the ice. The white water is coming from the painted ice, because the rink would be see through if not painted. After they pull all the plastic bits out, they melt the rink and start all over. That gets done for events in the arena that require the floor to be dry. When Andre Rieu came to our town, the venu was the arena because there were over 40,000 attendees, so it was the only venu big enough for the event. When they use the arena for a concert like that, they need the rink for extra space, so they clear the ice for it.
@shannonmclean9349

They don't do this after every game, just when the season is over. The following season, sponsors will change, logos get updated, the league requires new/different signage, etc. When they out the new ice down for the following season, the new signs will go down on top of some ice then they'll add several more inches if ice on top.

The logos are printed on a vinyl mesh. They lay it down and spray it with water to freeze it in place. They’ll hand spray it until there’s enough ice on top that they can run larger equipment for ice making. Hand painting the logos were very time consuming. Also, if they take good care of the vinyl when they’re pulling it out, it can be reused next year. Solid color markings like the blue line a d the goal line are painted. The yarn you saw being removed marked the edge for the painter.
@alexbruce7984

Some arenas are used for multiple things. Either when they have another event or at the end of the hockey season they will remove the ice and the graphics. The graphics are placed under the ice that way when skaters are using the ice the graphics are not getting ruined. If they were spray painted on the thin layer of water on top would melt and distort the graphics into a muddy mess. Most arenas try to thaw the ice as few times as possible. There is daily maintenance to keep it nice and with a smooth surface for the skaters hence why there is a very thin layer of water on the ice. It helps keep the skates from digging deep groves in the ice that other skates could catch on. The water settles in a starts to rapidly freeze in the deeper spots. The water also acts as a lube to help the skates glide smoothly. The machine used to keep the ice looking good is a zamboni and it does a few different yhings like polish the ice after games.

So a lot of teams do paint on the designs but its all layered, the bottom layers of ice are painted white, the middle layers will have the lines and designs either painted on or like this layed down, and then they have some layers of clear/non colored ice. They lay the ice before the season and once the season is over they melt the ice. To accommodate concerts and other events they add foam pads and other things on top of the ice to hide it basically and they also might take down the glass and boards.

I work security for a nhl arena. They do this every season. The ice actually isn’t that thick only a few inches. They use zambonies to scrape up the majority of it then let the last little bit melt. It’s just a concrete slab underneath of the ice and there is a system of pipes that runs through the slab distributing coolant for when the ice is there. We had a contractor drill into one of the pipes and it was spraying for days. They just had one of our cleaning crew use one of their riding floor cleaners and drive in circles around the leak all day to keep it from getting everywhere.

They don't do this every game - the ice is there for the entire season, they only melt it and take it down at the end once the team's season has ended (either at the end of the regular season or during the playoffs after elimination). Some teams actually use the end of the season ice melting as a fan appreciation event where they'll have a day where they invite fans (usually season ticket holders) to paint on the ice before it's all melted down. I've never attended one myself but have always wanted to, it looks cool.
