Dang....I want. As a sculptor myself, my bet is that the red balls were just there to give an indication that his toes were in fact finger-like and operated with that level of dexterity, as opposed to just saying "this creature simply has stubby feet and flipper arms".

Yes and knowing how Lucas operated by having artists make a bunch of creature designs and then choosing what he liked and assigning them parts, it may be that Max was originally conceived as more of a court jester type (a juggler) and then changed to be in the band. I’m not sure of the details there

Just to add in addition to the toy approvals Lucasfilm has also long approved the use of the bipedal Otolan’s in videogames. Where we see and interact with a number of them in several games. Such as BioWares Star Wars the Old Republic. So we have full 3d models of them up walking around and talking to players.

Has Phil or anyone else involved with the final design of the puppet/costume ever talked about this, because I can easily think of a couple of ways to make the initial design work, the simplest being to make the costume fit a whole person sitting down and using his legs as the arms or if they wanted to keep the size down just extending the limbs so that the actual arms of the puppeteer ends up at the creatures knees where the hands would manipulate the lower part of the leg with maybe a handle for wires to manipulate the toes. I think that they might have planned it this way first but somewhere along the line they decided against it, maybe as the toys were discussed, in order to get a cute elephant-looking alien that wouldn't creep children out and that could be made more commercially viable? The only other explanation for this would maybe be time constraints and they just needed to get the thing out to the set ASAP. I refuse to believe that ILM and Phil weren't able to make it exactly as the initial design or that Phil made it and went "Oh that doesn't look like it should, whatever, lets just leave it", the decision to change it had to be an informed one, maybe they thought it worked and looked better as arms rather than legs on camera and that was that? Still a great video and I think that initial design is great and would have been som much cooler and more alien. I'd really like to know the real truth about the change and as long as it comes from a valid source I'd even accept that they couldn't pull it off but I'd really like to know the reason why :)

I haven’t been able to find a comment from Phil about this specifically, but I feel like it wasn’t that uncommon for them to just go with something even if it wasn’t 100% what was originally intended. They had a LOT of aliens to make and it wasn’t critical that they all look exactly like the concepts. So maybe they realized it, but didn’t think it was important enough to scrap the work they had already done. It’s also conceivable that since ILM already had the concept version of Max Rebo in their heads, they didn’t realize how different he looked from the concept until Kenner came up with their toy. My main question is how Kenner came up with their bipedal version of the character, seemingly from whole cloth. Of course there is a history of Kenner just kind of making things up, like with the original blue Snaggletooth figure, which was not only the wrong color but also much too tall. I am pretty sure they would only have been supplied with a publicity photo of Rebo on the organ, so they just had to extrapolate from that. As you say, maybe Lucasfilm realized that a cute blue elephant-looking alien would be easier to sell to kids, and went with it. Lots of unanswered questions I’m afraid.

@@MightyJabbasCollection Time constraints and workload issues makes a lot of sense. Both Jabba and the Rancor must have gotten the most attention and I know they changed the Rancor from a human in a costume to a puppet since they weren't happy with the initial results and as you said, they had a lot of aliens to produce. Kenner taking their own liberties with the design fits the pattern and I love all the weird stuff surrounding that. One of my favorite trivias regarding this is the fake beard they had to glue on a guy in order to match the produced toy that got designed from a production still that was taken before actual filming and the guy managed to shave his beard in between. Thanks for the insight!

To be fair, the price isn't all that bad considering. I would have guessed around the $500 mark. It's a shame that you didn't compare your commissioned Max to the new one, in the video. It would have been nice to see how close the artist got to the original. Oh, and did you know, Max Rebo is actually playing the keyboard with his feet? 😂😂😂

The one I commissioned wasn’t intended to be a replica of the original maquette so much as a version of the original Max in the artist’s own style. So for example he left the red balls off entirely and didn’t try to replicate any of the specific details of the maquette
